Today, we launched NCR Culture, a conversation on books, TV, films and more. Every month, Olga Segura — along with other NCR staff — will interview writers, authors, poets, activists, directors and artists. In this first conversation, NCR national correspondent Christopher White spoke with film critic Sr. Rose Pacatte about her picks and predictions for the 2021 Academy Awards.
Background reading:
- Fr. Jim McDermott reviewed "Nomadland" for NCR, saying that the film resonated deeply with his own experience of our pandemic reality.
- A film that raises questions but doesn't provide reductive answers, "Soul" is an animated delight, says Pacatte.
- Pacatte also recommends live-action "Mulan" for families, calling it a film guided by "a strong and authentic human, feminist theme."
- While "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" didn't earn a Best Picture nomination, Pacatte says it was one of 2020's best films.
Look for future announcements about upcoming NCR Culture events — we'll be livestreaming monthly, and will offer the recorded conversations in audio format, too. Thanks for joining us!
