This is a series of essays written by supporters of the five Democratic presidential candidates with the best showing in the Feb. 3, 2020 Iowa caucuses, published alphabetically: Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The assignment: Write a Catholic case for your candidate focused on how Catholic social teaching/traditions — and/or your own conscience — have informed your choice.
Commentary: As a Catholic voter, I am asked to draw on both faith and reason. Hearing Sen. Elizabeth Warren speak and reading her plans, I feel that she appeals to both my intellect and my conscience.
Commentary: Bernie Sanders' election will help to create a more compassionate government that sees health care and education as human rights, and justice for all as a foundational value.
Commentary: The chief task of the new president will be to stand for justice, unite the country and move it forward for the benefit of all citizens. The best candidate to accomplish that is Amy Klobuchar.
Commentary: As someone who has followed Pete Buttigieg's career since he was first elected mayor of South Bend, Indiana, I have come to know his character, his heart, his decency, and his values.
Commentary: Former Vice President Joe Biden's candidacy speaks to the national necessity for a moral cleansing. Such a purification begins with the commandment, "Love one another."
