At CNS, a report on the visit by Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez of San Juan, Puerto Rico, to meet with administration and congressional leaders. There is a lot of movement on the issue of Puerto Rico's debt crisis, but so far, no concrete action. The religious leaders on the island are united in an effort to prevent austerity measures that would disproportionately harm the poor.
Mark Silk, at RNS, on Jerry Brown's signing the euthanasia law in California. I think the main reason RCs, like other Americans, support these laws is because they have a misplaced sense of sympathy combined with an excessive sense of personal autonomy. Rather than confront the dangers of these laws, or the horror they are meant to address, with solidarity and compassion, our "throwaway culture" makes it easier for people on the margins to dispose of themselves. It is creepy.
