The USCCB this morning released the text of a letter sent by Bishop Frank Dewane, Chair of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, to all members of Congress. The letter calls on Congress not to repeal the Affordable Care Act "without the concurrent passage of a replacement plan that ensures access to adequate health care for the millions of people who now rely upon it for their wellbeing." Let's hope Congress wil listen. I have my doubts.
The abortion rate has dropped to a forty year low according to a new report from Guttmacher Institute. The Hill has the story. I read this alongside Michael Wear's article at Politico about how candidate Obama's abortion reduction plan was overwhelmed by the toxic political climate. When you hear wither side in the abortion debate claim "We are going to do X" just remember that abortion is a complex sociological phenomneon, that the abortion rate will sometimes rise and fall no matter what a given politician, even a given president, intends to accomplish. More on this next week.
Also at Politico, Danny Vinik explains why Speaker Paul Ryan's favorite talking point on Obamacare isn't really true.
