In an interview with a Chicago television station, newly installed Archbishop Blase Cupich noted that the U.S. bishops' conference has already voiced support for interim measures, in the form of a presidential executive order, to ease the danger of deporting undocumented immigrants, especially when such deportations divide families. As my colleague Fr. Tom Reese, S.J. noted, the bishops sent a letter to the White House in September on this subject, but there was no press release and, last week, in his presidential address, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz neglected to mention immigration. This is a test for the conference. Will they be as vocal in their support of whatever President Obama announces tonight as they have been in denouncing Obama over the HHS mandate?
