At the Angelus is the text of Archbishop Jose Gomez's homily given at Sunday's Red Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew in Washington. It is a remarkable text, not least the shout-out to Michael Harrington!
The Trump administration launched a raid against undocumented immigrants, targeting those cities that are "sanctuary cities." I guess they have not been able to create enough fear in Texas. This is appalling. The Boston Herald reports on the raids in that city.
Ryan Anderson, the anti-same-sex marriage crusader from the Heritage Foundation, has been named a visiting fellow at the Veritas Center for Ethics in Public Life at Franciscan University of Steubenville, in Steubenville, Ohio. Anderson, as much as anyone, wants to keep re-litigating that fight, obsessed with an issue which most of us have moved on from. His obsession should not be permitted to become the church's obsession: There are more important things to discuss, and better ways to discuss this issue.

At The New York Times, Laurie Goodstein reports on the questions the senators should have asked judicial nominee Amy Barrett. I do not think a judicial nominee should be denied confirmation, even if he or she belongs to a religious group the rest of us find odd, but that is not the same thing as saying questions about such a group are per se inflammatory or out of bounds.
