The media are the frequent target for many bishops in the church. New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan sarcastically reported to his fellow bishops last week that the recent synod on the family in Rome was actually fairly boring despite the media's preoccupation with conflict emanating from the synod. The media, in the eyes of many bishops and laypeople, are always the bad actor when it comes to coverage of the church.
All eyes these days are reading news reports or watching video out of Chicago as Blase Cupich is installed as the ninth archbishop of Chicago. Against type, the Chicago Tribune ran an editorial titled, "Pax Vobiscum, Cardinal George."
The "sharelines" summarizing the editorial:
- "Cardinal Francis George, like his Chicago predecessor Joseph Bernardin, shows us extraordinary grace."
- "The handoff from Cardinal George to successor Blase Cupich is a lesson in facing our own mortality."
The editorial is very well done and worth the read. You can find it here. Good work by the Chicago Tribune.
