An 84-year-old retired bishop of Albany, who has been accused of sexual abuse and has unsuccessfully sought to be removed from the priesthood, said August 1 he recently married a woman in a civil ceremony.
The Albany Diocese has declared bankruptcy, becoming the fifth of eight New York state dioceses to declare bankruptcy as they face lawsuits alleging clergy sexual abuse.
New York's one-year window to allow victims of childhood sexual abuse to file civil lawsuits was originally supposed to end Aug. 14, 2020. It was extended twice amid concerns that the coronavirus pandemic and resulting court disruptions were keeping survivors from coming forward. The extension ends Aug. 14.
