Community supports ousted St. Louis nun
Louise Lears (Photo by Jim Tobin)Sister of Charity Louise Lears, forced out of all church ministerial roles by Saint Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, is described by friends and colleagues in near saintly terms.
They call her a bright, energetic, compassionate and faith-filled woman. They see her as a creative, generous and selfless person, a highly effective parish minister. They say she is first rate teacher and preacher. They view her as a person guided by the gospels including an unwavering commitment to justice and the local poor.
These seemingly universal accolades, however, were not enough to save Lears from a severe interdict by Burke who banished her from all Saint Louis church ministries last week.
He also banned her from receiving any of the Sacraments in the archdiocese.
It was her belief that all church ministries, including women’s ordination, should be open to women. Curiously, this seems to have been only one of many of her passions and, perhaps, not her central passion, which seems to have been parish work.
Lears was shocked twice last week. First, she learned that Burke had judged her guilty of three grave canonical offenses against faith and church teachings; then, the next day, she learned that her accuser and judge he had been elevated to a new Vatican post, prefect of the church’s highest canonical court in Rome.
She was out; then so was he, at least from Saint Louis.
Lears, 58, for the past three years has been a member of the pastoral team at Saint Cronan’s parish in South St. Louis, and a coordinator of religious education in the archdiocese.
Lears is not speaking to the media, but issued as statement saying she was “deeply saddened” by the judgment.
“I love the church. I would never give scandal to the People of God. As a faith-filled woman, I root my life and ministry in scripture, Eucharist, and Jesus’ gospel message of nonviolence and justice. As a Sister of Charity, I vow my life to God with whom I walk in humility, simplicity, and charity.”
While Lears’ primary identification is that of a member of the Saint Cronan pastoral team, she is or has recently been a member of a number of other organizations. She is past president of the board of the Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma in St. Louis, a board and finance committee member for the Family Care Health Centers in St. Louis, a member of Winter Outreach to Homeless there, also a member of the W’EARTH Housing Coalition, a coalition led by low-wealth women in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood in St. Louis.

She is also an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Theological Studies at Saint Louis University specializing in medical ethics and spirituality nonviolence.
Mark Chmiel, also an adjunct professor in the department, had this to say about his colleague:
“Sister Louise Lears has made availability and accompaniment a way of life. I have seen how much thoughtful attention and encouragement she gives to her students at Saint Louis University in her popular course, Spirituality of Nonviolence. Several times our community in Saint Louis traveled to the annual School of Americas vigil in mid-November, and I was always touched by Louise's calm and compassionate presence over those long weekends.
She also participated in our direct-action efforts to raise awareness and provoke responsible action about the U.S. government use of torture in Iraq and at Guantanamo. In such wise, wherever she is, she continually nurtures a community of conscience as naturally as she breathes.”
Gina Meyer, a former student in Lears' class, Spirituality of Nonviolence, said, "The class completely reoriented my view of human relationships. We learned about Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus of Nazareth, and many other peacemakers. Beyond that, though, Sister Louise showed us exercises and gave us challenges in our daily lives that made me realize how much my own language and behavior affect those around me.
Nonviolence is a true way of life and I learned if from Sr. Louise. She taught me how to be a more loving and peaceful Christian, and I am so happy that I was able to learn from her."
NCR contacted a number of her other colleagues who spoke with a mixture of outrage and mourning, anger at what they called the injustice of the action taken against Lears and sadness as they pondered the loss of her talents to the archdiocese.
Sister of Saint Joseph of Carondelet Jean Abbott recalled the time Lears arrived to help her set up a center to receive victims of torture coming from Guatemala. Abbott had found an old tavern, but it was Lears who imagined how it could be transformed into a vibrant center and set the wheels in motion. “I had very little money,” Abbott said. “Louise had an eye for organization. She brought the place to life.”
“She has a keen sense of justice,” Abbott said.
The Saint Cronan parish council last week seemed equally vexed and saddened. The council issued a statement criticizing Burke’s action while defending Lears' pastoral work “wholeheartedly.” “(We have) been edified by her depth of caring for the people of this parish, our children, the children of our neighbors, and the men and women who call the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood of St. Louis home.”
The statement added that Lears “has been a model of compassion and of non-violent resolution of conflict. She has encouraged us to live more fully the Gospel of Jesus. It saddens us deeply that she has been singled-out for prosecution in a church court.”
Echoing these expressions, Abbott said, “I feel tremendous compassion for Louise and I’m extremely sad for the church.”
Jerry King, a member of the parish and member of the Center for Theology and Social Analysis in Saint Louis, an organization he and Lears belong to, found irony in the Burke censure. “Louise was not spoiling for a fight; she really did not want a fight; she wanted resolution.” He said she just wanted to be a pastor – “and has been very good at it, very active in her commitments” to the parish, which he described as a “last stop” for people disaffected from the church.
King and others now worry the disaffected are now going to drop out altogether.
Ellen Rehg, another member of the parish, disagrees. She called Lears a “nonviolent saint” adding, “I don’t say that lightly.”
“She will continue to live nonviolently, maintaining her integrity. You know I’ve hardly ever heard of canon law until recently. She’s going to make it. So will we. She’s taught us to trust in the gospels.”

How can women keep putting up with this in our own church? Burke will be dining with carinal Law. Will Mahony be called to Rome next. This is a sign of real sickness in the Body of Christ. God help us all.
I have to say it. It is
I have to say it. It is really sickening to read this article, and the comments in support of a woman (and an Order), which has an agenda and purpose totally contrary to the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings, traditions, and belief.
My suggestion to this nun, to her entire Order, to American "Sisters" which support this agenda, and also laypeople who likewise support positions totally oppostite to the Catholic Church, to consider leaving the Catholic Church and joining any number of several hundred various Protestant "groups" or "Christian communities", where your aspirations and inclinations can be met.
But don't verbally bash Archbishop Burke, who did the correct thing and upheld the teachings of the Church. He's been promoted....and I hope his sucessor is just like him. Don't bash the Pope, or Catholic tradition. Don't wreck the Church just to push your own failed and heretical issues.
Use your two feet, and walk away from the Roman Catholic Church and find somewhere else to feel fufilled as a Christian. There's plenty of choices in the Protestant communities.
"You know I've hardly ever
"You know I've hardly ever heard of cnon law until recently." That just about says it all, doesn't it.
How can women continue
How can women continue supporting an institution that continually oppresses them?
Let's hear it for a female branch with Joan Chittister for Pope-ess!!!!!
Picture THAT college of cardinals. We'd all be wearing red shoes and putting an end to the B.S.
Holiness does not exist
Holiness does not exist without humble submission to a successor of the apostles. Sister Louise may show other great gifts but humility doesn't seem to be one of them.
The cafeteria is closed and the patrons are mortified. But the doors of the Church are open both to those who belong but, more importantly, to those who want or need to return. Like Sister Louise.
This is truly remarkable.
This is truly remarkable. For the past twenty centuries some in the Catholic clergy have been raping and sodomizing children. The bishops then covered it up and protected their priests. Yet, women's ordination is the greater problem. Archbishop Burke has made it clear that from his perspective the issues involving women's ordination justify removing someone from the sacraments. Yet the rape of an innocent child does not. It is really far past time for the laity in the church to put an end to this nonsense once and for all. If the laity do not demand a stop to this rampant clericalism the clergy will be the only ones attending church. Perhaps the clergy would prefer it that way.
Well said! The laity should
Well said! The laity should not be walking into those church doors. If God has called her to the priesthood than who is the Vatican or Burke or cannon law to say otherwise? If God is for her than who is against her? It is time for the people of God to choose: for the Vatican or for God's will. To me, it is obvious that this beautiful woman is the true priest of God and that she is doing God's will. It is also obvious that Burke and the Vatican are not doing God's will. How do I know? As this letter writer put it so well and as I will summarize: fruits of the spirit. The woman priest in St. Louis has them and the Vatican does not so it is high time that American church separate and become the American Catholic Church. We need a American Catholic Luther. Maybe this woman priest will be our Joan of Arc, our Luther, our Martin Luther King. People of America, land of the free, shed the chains of slavery that Christ has died for and our ancestors set the foundation for and set up an American Catholic church where women's priesthood is practiced. Let there be a priesthood of men who are married. No more sending money to the Vatican. What is given in American stays in American unless it is to help the poor in the world. Who will being this?
I am sitting here at home
I am sitting here at home crying!
I was as a youth sexually abused by a priest. He is still in charge, but is only mowed to a new post to another country. The Church did never, when it was possible and time for it, take any serious actions against him. Today the case is to old to follow up.
Sister of Charity Louise Lears, on the other hand is been set under interdict for asking questions.
Why are women in the Church treated so much as second class members of the Church? Why are they subject for so much harder judgements than men?
She has only done as so many, even saints have done before her, she has asked important questions.
Rape is not important for the Church, but one woman with some questions is "so dangerous" that she has even been set under interdict one of the hardest reactions the Church can give.
I am really crying for the Church.

Louise is my biological sister. I stand with her, as I have had since we were growing up in a strong, loving Catholic family. I also believe that all of the sacraments should be available to all Catholics, not just half of them. I pray that the Bishops will listen to all of their congregants before judging and imposing "just" penalties as Archbishop Burke did.

Prayers for Sr. Louise. Let us all seek the intercession of Blessed John XXIII -- that holy men and women of the church may find common ground in serving the mission of the Church in the modern world. Come Holy Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!
Jesus would not have denied
Jesus would not have denied Sister Louise communion. Jesus offered Judas communion at the last supper even though he knew that Judas would betray him. Does the Archbishop believe in Jesus Christ or does he make his own rules? Men in power fear women of vision. That should tell us something.

Again, speaking truth to Power always seems to cause trouble. That man is malicious. Certainly one of the hirelings Jesus spoke about.
I can well understand all
I can well understand all the emotion that this incident has caused. From way off in Australia, and not knowing the facts surrounding this matter, it seems that there are issues that are pertinent to the Universal Church. These are:
Was Sister Louise given natural justice? Was she counselled and given an opportunity to respond to her accuser(s)? Were the proceedings open and impartial? Was the penalty appropriate to the 'offence'?
Why is it that church people accused of deviant opinions are tried, convicted and sentence imposed, all in secret?
I agree with another correspondent that priests and religious who have committed serious crimes against children have often been moved on to green pastures and the matter has been covered up and neither reported to the civil authorities nor any appropriate penalty imposed by the Church. Yet offering an opinion contrary to a ruling by a former pontiff appears to have incurred instant excommunication.
I am sorely perplexed.
I looked "Abbot"
I looked "Abbot" Christiansen up in Google. You're not an "Abbot" of any offial, approved Catholic Order or community, but rater a leader of an inter-demoninational (non-Catholic) group the "Community of St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Francis de Sales", whatever that is....which also supports gay/lesbian/bisexual marriage, etc.etc.etc. Having read that, I'm fignuring that you gotta be another lunatic Epsicopalian, or have connections to the Episcopal Church.
As a traditional Catholic, I resent that you people (and by extension the NCR) habitually is trying to tear down the traditional CAtholic faith, and instead supporting the lunatic fringe group of "catholics" such as radical femminst nuns (Sr. Lears etc.), gay priests and seminarians, homosexuality in general and gay marriage, radical liberals, ecumenists.
Millions of faithful Catholics like me would love to see the NCR, and your little "religious Order", close up shop for good.
Well that's rather
Well that's rather judgmental don't ya think Abbot? You can judge Burke to be one of the wicked hierlings about whom our Lord spoke, but Burke can't identify this nun as being a wolf in sheeps clothing?
Knock off all the self-righteousness and indignation. The 60s are over with. GET OVER IT!!!
I am a long-time employee of
I am a long-time employee of the Archdiocese of Chicago, and therefore a little nervous about giving my name, so I will understand if my comments cannot be shared, but I MUST respond to this latest story of this amazing, Christ-like woman, who has been so severely reprimanded. I do not know Sr. Louise, but I am so angry that her ministry to the people whom she has shepherded has been curtailed by a man who was clearly intimidated by her loving use of her God-given gifts.
The church hierarchy has certainly made its position very clear in the past few weeks: the Pope is recommending that all parishes have the Latin Mass, so the priests can literally turn their backs on the people, and this bishop has figuratively turned his back on the people of his diocese, many of whom made clear to him that Sr. Louise was an important part of their faith community and was using her gifts in ways that aided their spiritual development. She was committing the sin of helping them to know Jesus!
I would hope that all the Catholic faithful who have ever used any form of hierarchy-forbidden contraceptives, and all who willingly enter into forbidden dialogue about the need for priestly women to be ordained, and all who are raising good, Catholic children in homes headed by faith-filled gay and lesbian parents, and all who don't believe that Jesus would have spent ANY time trying to oust Sr. Louise, will stand up and be counted. Let us all be banished from the sacraments, excommunicated, interdicted - whatever punitive measures the hierarchy can create - and we will, together, re-assemble away from the institution to create the church Jesus came to build.
God be with Sr. Louise and those who are hurting in St. Louis - and around the world.
'Let us all be banished from
'Let us all be banished from the sacraments, excommunicated, interdicted - whatever punitive measures the hierarchy can create - and we will, together, re-assemble away from the institution to create the church Jesus came to build.'
LOL! those are bold words. Now, I seems to remember something about the Catholic Church being necessary for salvation? That's it: Extra ecclesiam nulla salus. Christ built his Church on the rock which is Peter. Ubi Petrus ibi ecclesia. ubi ecclesia ibi vita aeterna.
Dear Long-time Employee of
Dear Long-time Employee of the Chicago Archdiocese,
A group of us at Holy Family Parish in Inverness are also dismayed by the way the church hierarchy is treating fine, committed men and women. They have lost touch with us, and we agree that it's time that we join together - to protest? to form a real Vatican II church that welcomes women, gays, lesbians and anyone else whose views do not conform with a doctrine created by old men to protect their power and territory?
The real crime is that any attempt to organize like-thinking Catholics is squelched before it gets started. We obviously need a strong, charismatic leader to give us the courage to make lasting changes. If you have any suggestions for what we can do in the meantime, please let me know.
A Long-time and long-frustrated Catholic

I will with many others stand up in total accordance with this comment
I think that Sr. Louise
I think that Sr. Louise sounds like a wonderful and spirit filled woman. It is a terrible mark on the Vatican to have someone like Msgr. Burke running around condeming people (it isn't because she is a woman?).
Raising 5 children and working in church ministry is my life. I have learned through the school of hard knocks (working for the church) that a paid employee can be treated unjustly because you are following one's conscious. The business world can and does treat employees with respect. I still volunteer for the church and I long to see spiritual people in leadership positions. It does take courage and the conviction that one's life is following the Lord. Unforunately, we have many good and kind Bishops but know one will lead us to a higher spiritual path of love and mercy. I want to see women's ordination, and to see the gospel lived out in parishes. It sounds like Sr. Louise lived out the Gospel in her parish and followed the Lord. How happy God is.

I am a retired Lutheran Pastor, ELCA and a Buddhist volunteer in prisons here in Central Wisconsin. Blessings to you sister and strength. Know that there many who will walk with you through this tradegy.
The historic church is a sick community. We must carry on beyond this sickness. My wife was just ordianed last year as an iterfaith pastor (One Spirit Seminary in NYC) and we are clear that this needs to happen acroass our world in all spiritual communties.
Hang is there Sister. We love and support you and so does God, she told me that this morning in my prayers!

Every time I feel a sense of
Every time I feel a sense of hope for our church, something like this comes up and destroys it. Now I have to find a way, again, to deal with the anger and outrage I feel towards the arrogance of some of our bishops. They have a lot to answer for.
I tell my kids, "Don't leave. Fight for change from within." No wonder some of them don't buy it.
I pray that the Holy Spirit is listened to by more of our "leaders."
The thing that saddens me is how hard it is to listen to anything coming from Rome or the hierarchy with respect.
Well, Eileen, while you deal
Well, Eileen, while you deal with the "anger and outrage" that you feel toward the "arrogance of some of our bishops," I'll be dealing with the anger and outrage that I feel toward people like you who have tried to dismantle the Church and undermine her teachings with your crazy ideas and then try to talk about how humble you and this nun are and how you think that you are being guided by the Holy Spirit.
So, that's it...and I guess
So, that's it...and I guess by me voicing my displeasure about Burke's decision, as well as my agreement with Louise Lears' position on women and Church ministry, my position in ministry could be in jeopardy, too? It is quite ad to see that our Church has taken another step towards telling the faithful that you had either be 100% complicit or we'll excommunicate you. I'm sorry, but that is spreading fear, not faith. I wish the hierarchy could understand that those of us who do critique the Church do so because we love our faith tradition and want it to continue to reflect it's best side to the world.
You know what is really sad, though - if Jesus were to come back today, I think the Church would excommunicate him for being a heretic, too.
I, as a young, unlearned man
I, as a young, unlearned man (I'll grant you), find that we, the Church, in our current form, are in a grave state of sin; we are comitting a heresy against Jesus. Jesus sat at table with whores, but we refuse to share the meal of salvation with those who support contraceptives. Some of Jesus', and the early Church's, most important disciples were women; Paul writes about women who could be Deacons or even priests; we've found paintings that make it clear that, from the earliest days when the Church was still The Way, women were priests; and certainly no one can argue at the least that Peter, the Pope, was a married man, that Bishops were married, and that most of the Christians, priests, deacons, or laity, were also married. And yet the right-wings in our Magesterium claim Tradition as one reason why the question of the co-ed un-celibate married priesthood isn't even discussed, let alone considered. I'd like to know who's tradition they're following: Jesus', or the Sadducee's?
And it's been made clear to me that if I voice my opinion to the Church at large, I will be the one excommunicated with heresy. I say, fine. I would rather be excommunicated than to let evil happen while I "sit back and do nothing."
I think it is a grave sin to block vocational calls; and it's stories like these that will find people being lost. I myself almost left and joined the Episcopalians, who have the priesthood I'd like (their "Pope" is a woman!), and they have transubstantiation; and while I realized that this is the Church to be in (at least that's where I'm at now), I know that many of the sheep will stray if we continue to sin. Sin, after all, is really just turning away from Jesus; Jesus would've eaten with gays, with women priests, with those who support abortion and contraceptives; Jesus was more than just liberal, He was a radical heretic! But that's because He's GOD! Jesus is calling us to be as accepting and as perfect as He is.
But instead, the Most Reverend Raymond Burke is sending a sheep away from us, leaving the 99 left behind confused as to what happened, saddened by our loss, and liking the shepherd we read about in the Bible much better.
Archbishop Burke's "either
Archbishop Burke's "either be 100% complicit or we'll excommunicate you" stance reminds me of George W. Bush's stance about supporting the current war: either we're for or against it. It's a black/white, either/or mentality, and I don't buy it, either from our so-called president or from any bishop.
Does Archbishop Burke ever
Does Archbishop Burke ever read the Gospels? This is not how Jesus would treat people.
Do you ever read the
Do you ever read the Gospels? I seem to recall Jesus having some very strong words for such people as the pharisees. Did you accidentally overlook those passages?
God help us all! .....and we
God help us all!
.....and we wonder, what is going on, what is going wrong!
The world is plagued with bushes and the Church with burkes!
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in us the fire of your Divine Love and Forgiveness.
I feel strong that Sister
I feel strong that Sister Lears has been a victim of Burkes unjustly ruling but please do not policitize you comments. It is a shame that some people simply hate George Bush and it has to come through in every comment they make. Sister Louise is certainly not about hate and you should not not comment in a way that is simply against everything she stands for!
Well, the best we can say is
Well, the best we can say is good riddance to the Archpharisee of St. Louis who will now become chief justice of the Sanhedrin upon appointment by the High Priest. Sr. Louise should take great comfort in being in such good company having run afoul of Jerusalem, er, I mean Rome.
Once one starts working with
Once one starts working with the truly disadvantaged, it makes a lot of our rules seem so trite and not worth worrying about, much as Jesus did with the Pharisees. Look what they did to him! Times haven't changed so much after all.
D.
I'm always struck by how
I'm always struck by how similar the Catholic Church at this time seems to the US aministration of this time. Both are empires struggling for survival against the overwhelming force of their constituencies. It will only be by the Grace of God that either will survive.
What rock are you living
What rock are you living under, Jay? The next generation of the Church is about to come to power and most of us don't agree with your liberal ideas. The "constituency" is changing. Wake up!
Behold the gun slinging,
Behold the gun slinging, sacrament denying, take no prisoners Archbishop Burke. He has been kicked upstairs to the Vatican court so he won't be able to cotinue to politicize the sacraments. Regretfully some of these "no nonsense" bishops are the legacy of Holy Father John Paul II. Dissent seems to be an endangered species with these prelates.
Lord- how much longer do
Lord- how much longer do your people have to suffer with the law over-ruling your gospels.
Dick of Bend ,Or.
It saddens me that often
It saddens me that often those who most closely live the Gospel message are the very ones singled out for trial. Do times ever change? Why is it that Christ-like behavior and reaching out lovingly to others in need causes the need for removal? Is this how much we fear being challenged by how Jesus lived and treated others?
I continue to be chagrined
I continue to be chagrined by the actions of the church hierarchy who seem to be more motivated by fear of any criticism of the church's position on women's ordination than a true desire to live, and allow others to live, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
It is my feeling that first
It is my feeling that first Eucharist -The Body and Blood of Our Lord, Jesus Christ - was consecrated in the womb of The Blessed Virgin Mary. The Mother of God, a woman, was given the honor of given birth to Christ. Her hands soothed and cared for him. She taught and comforted Him. Would she be less worthy than a male priest to celebrate Mass, administer sacraments and consecrate the Host?
Although, culturally, it was unusual for a woman to have the privilege and status of a man in the time of Christ, he welcomed Mary (sister of Martha) to sit with the disciples, honoring her devotion. Jesus was the first, great, non-discriminator against women!
Which year will be the year of enlightenment - the year the church recognizes equality of men and women? Galileo and I are waiting for that apology!
As I recall, the year of
As I recall, the year of enlightenment saw many losing their heads in France. Perhaps you should find a better metaphor.
By the way, Galileo already got his apology. This heretic nun won't.
When will the bishops really
When will the bishops really get it? Once again a good, holy, just person, a woman of integrity gets short changed. What would Jesus do? (WWJD?) I think he would have harsh words for Archbishop Burke, maybe similar to what was said to Peter, "Get out of my sight."
Please God give all Christian Churches eyes to see You. Please God give all human kind eyes to see the need to be open to the poor, to woman, to the afflicted - as you were; as you ARE. Let us all recognize what it means to be human in your sight. Transform our 'looking' into 'seeing' into 'action.'
Thank you Sr. Louise Lears for your courage, your example, your following of the Gospel. Thank you Sisters of Charity for your support of your sister.

Dear JoAnn,
I bet that, when you try to think of what Jesus would do, he always ends up endorsing your own personal opinions. What a coincidence!
I am 62. They will not
I am 62. They will not drive me out, no matter, but my kids and grandkids, whom I want dearly to love the church and it traditions and rituals as much as I, see nothing but institutional arrogance and self righteousness. The pope and bishop burke are merely mortal men, whose own moral compass has be proven time and again over the history of the church to be defective and simply human, at best. Who do they think they are? The Holy Spirit? Ordination does not give them omnipotence. Humility and Compassion are called for here.
So,So sad...for all our kids and grandkids.....
I hope and pray that the church of St. Louis rises up in vigorours support of sister lousie.
Thank you for writing this,
Thank you for writing this, Frank Puthoff. I feel very similarly. I'm also very tired of saying to my non-Catholic friends and family that the these self righteous, presumptuous, and power driven actions of those aspiring to Vatican positions truly do not represent Catholicism, nor are they inherently Christian actions. The Church I love is one of compassion, love, forgiveness and mercy. Unfortunately, this Church, the real one, is being over shadowed by the power hungry, fearful, small minded people who hold institutional power and who wield that power whenever they feel threatened and outshined by someone like Sister Louise who seems to exemplify a life of faith with Christ's compassion and love.

Well, here's my version of that rant: Chittister, Louise, etc. compose but the tip of this iceberg of corruption known as the religious orders of the church. Despots and mediocrities in pants suits. They are deluded by the gradeur the enabling arm of the NCR and Call To Action provide. Mincing women in pants suits unable to see they are but players in an immense farce (that began somewhere around 1960). Yet, their delusional minds pervent them from seeing the injury they do to others - the innocent (i.e. Burke and others who uphold orthodox teaching).
The article tells me alot
The article tells me alot about some of the good work Sr. Louise does but lacks in specifics as to why she was banded from ministry and the sacraments. That's a pretty big penalty and I don't thing just espousing ordination of women would qualify for such a harsh penalty. There seems to be something missing in the story.
In response to the person
In response to the person who questioned whether something was missing in the story, I can say I am blessed to know Sr. Louise and if anything, the article understated her commitment to the community and to the causes of justice. The only thing missing in the story is mention of the fact that Archbishop Burke had neither the courage nor the courtesy to actually meet with Sr. Louise to ask her whether the charges he leveled against her were true. He acted as the sole prosecuter, judge, jury and executioner which is exactly what is to be expected of a person in power who abuses his power to oppress other persons.
I, too, am waiting for the
I, too, am waiting for the specifics.
This rush to judgement is also not what Jesus would condone.
The archbishop certainly is innocent till proved guilty.
It is unfortunste he will not be around to do so.

As a member of Cronan's (being with Sr. Louise from the beginning) that is EXACTLY the point. She went to the ordination with several hundred other people and was singled out for punishment. She did nothing more than the other people and was told that she committed "grave scandel to the church" and "threatened immortal souls".
As a member of Sr. Louise's
As a member of Sr. Louise's parish, I can tell you for certain that her attendance at the women's ordination is, indeed, the 'crime' for which she has received such a severe punishment. Please continue to pray for Sr. Louise and all of the wounded but faith-filled Catholics that have suffered under the reign of Raymond Burke. And in the true spirit of the Gospel, we must also pray, as we do every week at St. Cronan's 'for our brother, Raymond'.
We Episcopalins began
We Episcopalins began womens' ordination nearly 40 years ago. We now have women deacons, priests, and bishops, incluing our current Presding Bishop, who is the chief bishop in the church.
I am convinced that the evidence - tomb stones, catecomb frescos and at least one church fresco of Theodora Episcopa - for women's ordination is sound and that societal forces, not theology, caused the end of womens' ordination. The legalization of the church changed the domestic nature of the church to a new public venue. "Nice" women did not speak in public.
Even today most Bibles continue to mistranslate diaconon in Romans 16:1 (in the phrase Phoebe the deacon) rendering the woman a church helper or a deaconess, rather than a deacon. Have we no shame? or integrity?
It is lamentable that free inquiry is censured by the current Curial leadership. I hope that times will change, but I doubt that it will be soon when the leadership seem to be clones.
I am proud to say I am a
I am proud to say I am a traditionalist Roman Catholic, aged 26.
I love the ancient teachings and traditions of my Church, the Gregorian Chant, the Tridentine Latin Mass, the incense, the contemplative quiet and prayerfullness at Mass, the beauty of the altar, the magnificence of the music, the faithful young priests, monks, and friars nuns and sisters all dedicated to Catholic tradition and obedience to the Pope.
I resent the radical liberals in the Catholic Church who took much of their inspiration (especially in the fabricated Novus Ordo Catholic Mass), from you Episcopalians and other Protestant groups, and who tried to tear down the Catholic Faith in 40 years.
I am proud of our Pope, Benedict XVI who is trying to bring Catholic ways and worship back.
The "Reformation" has given
The "Reformation" has given you the earthly right to ordain whomever you chose: women, gays, married, married gays, etc. The Roman Catholic Church has 2000 years of Sacred Tradition that will not be altered and changed to suit the whims of peoples' feeling. The world is already noting the effects of artificial birth control (increased divorce rates and loss of respect for life). Episcopalians, and other Protestant sects have all the "freedom" you want to act on your feelings. Where has that really gotten you?? Freedom is hinged on responsibility. Who are we to say we know what pleases or displeases Jesus?? Jesus was obedient to the Father unto death. Obedience is a clear element that is often overlooked when it is no longer convenient. Viva il Papa!!
"....And if wicked men
"....And if wicked men insult and hate you all because of Me....blessed, blessed are you...." Take heart, Sister, many are with you in spirit.
"When one door closes, God
"When one door closes, God opens another one." I feel anger at the seeming injustice, yet at the same time, I feel excited for her at the vast wonder, possibilities God still has in store for her. From 'an outsider looking in.'
I grew up in St. Louis and
I grew up in St. Louis and graduated from Rosati-Kain which is next door to the Cathedral. I have watched with increasing sadness as Bishop Burke bullied the Catholics in the diocese if they would not bend to his will and as my family members became evermore estranged from the church. How many pedophile priests did Burke put under interdict? How can he call himself a Christian in light of the action he's taken against a true follower of Jesus? Whatever you think of women's ordination, it's not immoral to disagree with church teaching regarding this "man" made rule. I suppose we should be grateful that people who disagree with the Bishop can't be tortured anymore as they could during the Inquisition because I truly believe Bishop Burke would feel justified in doing it if canon law allowed it. The leadership will not change unless we, the people, use non-violent ways of resisting these unjust edicts. I hope everyone who sees Sr. Louise at church offers her their Eucharist and contributes their money to one of Sr. Louise's favorite causes until this nonsensical act is rescinded.
How very sad for the church
How very sad for the church to take action against a Woman, A Saint, A Soul, a Beloved child of God such as this. The world with all of its problems, and this is where the demigods are putting their energy? HOW SAD!

More and more I am astounded
More and more I am astounded at the church's lack of Christian charity towards it's own. The heirarchy has too much power and who will stand up for the faithful.
The catholic church doesn't deserve Lears and this situation makes me glad that I have chosen to exercise my faith in another religion. I was baptized Catholic...went to catholic grammer school and high school in Charleston, SC. I attended Mercy School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC and was married at Belmont Abbey Cathedral in Belmont, NC.
I have been fully immersed in Catholicism and I am proud to say I am a reformed catholic.
I left without looking back and I love my new found church First Congregational in Memphis, Tn
Thank you for the opportunity to express my sadness at the way Lears has been treated.

Dear Jan Tuller: And I thank
Dear Jan Tuller:
And I thank you for the opportunity to express my appreciation that you had the integrity to leave if you felt that way. Perhaps Sr. Louise should develop the integrity that you have.
I pray that one day you will accept the truth and come back home to the true Church. But not until you are humble enough to admit that you were wrong. Otherwise you'll just be another Sr. Louise trumpeting her "humility."
While bishops are kicking
While bishops are kicking Catholics out of the "Bishop Churches," popes are bending over backwards to placate the Jewish and Muslim communities by praying in synagogues and mosques. JPII is pictured receiving the Koran from an Imam and kissing the Koran in public. It seems bishops and popes show a higher regard for peoples of other religions than they do for their own co-religionists. What do you think this says to those of other religions they are trying to proselytize? To paraphrase the rabbi in "Fiddler on the Roof," "God bless and keep the pope...far away from us."
Your praise of this woman is
Your praise of this woman is a sham. By her own comments she reveals the moral relativism by which she lives her life. You quote her as saying, "I love the church." But evidently she doesn't love it enough to obey it. Her words are empty. "I would never give scandal to the People of God." Yet she has. "As a faith-filled woman,..." faith in what, her own infallibility? "I root my life and ministry in scripture, Eucharist, and Jesus’ gospel message of nonviolence and justice." Ah, now the truth comes out. She embraces nonviolence and justice (her justice no doubt) and rejects what Scripture teaches.... It's fitting that she's out and Burke was elevated (not out as you put it -- biased reporting) to a role that has fully validated his decision to remove her from ministry. The more such persons are removed from ministry, the stronger the church will become. It is sad that for all her good works, she's not Catholic...she's protestant.
In response to Stanley
In response to Stanley Williams' comments: Did not Jesus himself embrace nonviolence and justice as his response to false accusations, plotting and scheming for his downfall, and injustice?
I firmly believe the Church
I firmly believe the Church passes judgments on people that Jesus would not agree with. I also believe that while the “Church” denies Jesus in the form of Sacraments to many people based on these judgments, Jesus would give himself freely and lovingly.
Stanley, I am proud that you
Stanley,
I am proud that you are free to say such judgmental and angry things about a nun who has dedicated her life to God's people. That proves that we live in a free country. I am so sad that you consider yourself able to define what is Catholic. I thought it was baptism? Who knew it was something else.
If people like her are removed from the ministry we will have a strong church, that serves no one but you and your self righteous companions who didn't need Jesus to save them anyway. You are probably already perfect.
Sir, why have you not
Sir, why have you not noticed by now that the church, spelled HIERARCHY, uses power and control to intimidate, punish, and excommunicate. Where in the gospels do you read that this is what Jesus did? Most of us are quite practically PROTESTant because we protest.
