VATICAN CITY -- Pope Benedict XVI will welcome U.S. President Barack Obama to the Vatican July 10 for an audience scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Obama will visit Italy July 8-10 to participate in the Group of Eight summit, a meeting of leaders of the world's wealthiest nations. The meeting will be held in L'Aquila, site of a devastating earthquake in April.

After the G-8 summit, the president and his wife, Michelle, are scheduled to fly to Ghana, arriving late July 10.

Although Pope Benedict usually meets heads of state and government in the morning, the Vatican agreed to host Obama's first visit to the papal palace the evening before he flies to Africa.

It is not clear whether Miguel Diaz, a theology professor tapped by Obama to be the new U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, will be present for the meeting. As of June 23, the Senate hearing for the new ambassador's confirmation was not on the public schedule of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

Discussions between popes and U.S. presidents usually focus on common concerns regarding world events and the church's concerns over issues or policies with special moral relevance. So in addition to discussing ongoing tensions in the Middle East, especially the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Iraq, Pope Benedict likely will bring up his concerns regarding abortion policy in the United States and renewed government permission for embryonic stem-cell research.

Yesterday, NCR launched a series of podcast interviews discussing U.S.-Vatican relations. Look at this page for updates over the next several days.

And we know that NCR will

And we know that NCR will criticize the Holy Father for bringing up concerns about abortion....

Most probably he will not.

Most probably he will not. He, unlike most US Catholics (or so it seems), is perfectly able to deal with heads of State without mixing up politics (internal politics at that) with diplomatic links. Stop being so insular and learn to respect your civil authorities (give unto Caesar...)!!!

Will the American Bishop

Will the American Bishop boycott any future meetings with the Pope, or will they criticize the Pope like they did Notre Dame? I betcha they - including Burke - will be lined up next to the Pope to shake Obama's hand.

It seems that you missed the

It seems that you missed the whole point. Please let me enlighten you. The Bishops certainly are not opposed to talking to a pro-abortion President. They just don't think a so-called Catholic University should give that President a forum and the University's highest degree as an honor. Popes have met with Arafat and many others whom they did not agree with, but never gave these people Papal honors. Perhaps you were not aware that Pope Benedict even met with Nancy Pelosi. Just as Jesus met with all, but never failed to used the opportunity as a teaching moment, the Vicar of Christ on earth must do the same. At Notre Dame, there was no teaching moment for Obama. I hope this will help you in making more informed statements in the future.

"Popes have met with Arafat

"Popes have met with Arafat and many others whom they did not agree with, but never gave these people Papal honors."

That's where you are mistaken. French President Sarkozy is pro-abortion rights, but he still recieved Papal honors. He was made a canon of St. John Lateran.

It's a nice gesture on

It's a nice gesture on Obama's part to make time for a meeting with Benedict XVI. I'm sure he has a lot of more important things on his mind right now.

Like meeting with Islamic

Like meeting with Islamic religious leaders?

If the Pope meets with Obama

If the Pope meets with Obama it means he supports abortion, he is a baby murderer, a secular humanist, he has blood on his hands, should never have communion, should go to jail, hit lists should be updated to include XVI-Benedict and he can forget Randall Terry's Christmas party!

"Hypocrisy can afford to be

"Hypocrisy can afford to be magnificent in its promises; for never intending to go beyond promises; it costs nothing." (Edmund Burke)

Behind facades of public smiles and polite gestures lurks the beast none dare confront. It is a creature capable of beguiling evil itself.

This is hypocrisy, a self-idolater, and serves neither evil nor any good intent.

What chance has truth against such audacity? Who among you, save the Lord, could dispatch such a thing?

God Bless Pope Bendict XVI.

God Bless Pope Bendict XVI. Let us pray that he can convince President Obama that LIFE is the right choice.

To all in my American

To all in my American Country,

Please watch carefully what is about to happen with our Country, The United States Of America. This union with our President and the Pope is not as good as you may think it is. We are headed for a one World order, one World Government as well as a one World religion. This is the beginning of sorrows for America but we set back and allow these things to happen just like we did in voting Obama in as President. Now because of that alot of America regrets their choose. We need to be wise to all we do and only believe the Word of God is being fulfilled as God said it would be. Keep your eyes on Iran more than you are Iraq. Iran and Israel will soon go to war. Watch how our once great Country for the first time backs down from helping protect Israel. Much is yet to come. If you have any questions concerning my comments just email me and I will answer your questions according to the word of God.

There isn't a "union between

There isn't a "union between the Pope and the President". It is a meeting and dialogue, and not for religious dialogue, but to discuss Obama's decisions as to how they may hinder the moral life of the Catholic lay faithful. They are meeting regarding the city of man and the earthly city, not, for eschatalogical reasons. If God has eschatalogical purposes for this meeting, as you seem to imply, we will find out in His time. But, right now, let's just concentrate on living a moral life with the end in mind, not that in predicting it is here. Worrying about the end times hinders working for God's kingdom here in the earthly city, now. I know, I used to think it was right around the corner, just like the nascent Christians did as St. Paul pointed out in one of his letters. And, it hindered my spiritual life. Peace in Christ, always.

Sad that folks do not read

Sad that folks do not read the word. The Pope is helping set up the end of times world government. He sets on top of the united nations and all the other nations will be like puppet under him soon. Revelation 17:9, "And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth." Vatican is the city of seven hills. Add up the roman spelling of vicar of Christ in roman numerals. VICARIUS FILII DEI, is how it is spelled.
The united nations divided the world into 10 kingdoms in 1997. North America is kingdom number one.
Now remember that a beast is a nation in bible prophesy: Revelation 13:3, "...and all the world wondered after the beast." Revelation 13:8, "And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world."
Which church is also a nation anywhere on planet earth? Really is simple.
Sad that folks do not read the word.

i fully agree with what you

i fully agree with what you are stateing, I'm confused thou, about come out of her my people, what about the shaking of the SDA church? should'nt we stay in the church? bad people shaken out and people from other faiths shaken in the SDA church. Thank You For Your Patience

You sound offended. SDA are

You sound offended. SDA are like any other people...all humans who are weak ...bent to sin...only the word of God can make one strong if the person seek knowledge sincerely...they wonder away just like anyone ...that's why God asks us to seek...HE said "My people perish for lack of knowledge." Go read what Jesus said...HE said I will bring my sheep together in one place so they will not be scattered here and there....Doesn't that give you and me a picture that only 2 groups of people will be when the LORD comes again? He said His sheep knows His voice and when He calls them they will hear...If we think of God denomiationally I think we feel hurt when we are reminded of God's word; but when we purpose to study and focus on God's word alone only then we can hear and understand what its trying to teach us. Go read the whole bible...study Daniel and revelation...there it says, "Whoso readeth let him understand..." It says that the things God showed him is about the future...
