Despite criticism, Notre Dame firm: Obama will speak
South Bend, Ind., bishop expected to issue a statement
Mar. 24, 2009
WASHINGTON -- University of Notre Dame officials were standing firm on their choice of President Barack Obama as commencement speaker at the institution's May 17 graduation, in spite of a large number of Catholics calling on them to rescind the invitation.
The Indiana university, run by the Congregation of Holy Cross, and the White House announced March 20 that Obama would be Notre Dame's 2009 commencement speaker and confirmed he will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree at the graduation.
"The invitation to President Obama to be our commencement speaker should not be taken as condoning or endorsing his positions on specific issues regarding the protection of human life, including abortion and embryonic stem-cell research," said Holy Cross Father John I. Jenkins, president of the University of Notre Dame.
"Yet, we see his visit as a basis for further positive engagement," he said in a March 23 statement.
The announcement on Obama was promptly followed by a flurry of criticism from Catholics, who said the president's support of legal abortion and embryonic stem-cell research makes him an inappropriate choice to be the commencement speaker at a Catholic university.
The Cardinal Newman Society -- a Manassas, Va.-based Catholic college watchdog group -- announced March 23 it had collected more than 54,000 signatures so far in an online petition that calls for Notre Dame to rescind its invitation to Obama to be this year's commencement speaker.
"We fully expected some criticism and have received it, though nothing more than we anticipated," said Dennis K. Brown, a spokesman for Notre Dame. "I can't foresee us rescinding the invitation."
Brown told Catholic News Service March 23 that he has heard anecdotally that most students are pleased with this year's choice of Obama as the commencement speaker and feel honored the first black U.S. president would accept Notre Dame's invitation from among the many he has received.
The 44th president also will deliver the commencement addresses at Arizona State University May 13 and the U.S. Naval Academy May 22, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said March 20. The U.S. president traditionally delivers a speech to graduating students at one of the U.S. military academies.
Obama will be the ninth U.S. president to receive an honorary degree from Notre Dame and the sixth to be a commencement speaker. In 2001, President George W. Bush addressed the graduating class about the importance of faith-based organizations.

The petition drive initiated by the Cardinal Newman Society called it "an outrage and a scandal" for the university to honor Obama and asked Jenkins to "halt this travesty immediately."
"This nation has many thousands of accomplished leaders in the Catholic Church, in business, in law, in education, in politics, in medicine, in social services and in many other fields who would be far more appropriate choices to receive such an honor," the petition says.
By close to noon EDT March 24, the Web site www.notredamescandal.com reported having received more than 60,150 signatures on the petition.
Bishop John M. D'Arcy of Fort Wayne-South Bend -- the diocese where Notre Dame is located -- said through a spokesman March 24 that he would issue a statement about the issue later in the day.
"By inviting Barack Obama as commencement speaker, Notre Dame is telling the nation that the teaching of the Catholic Church on this fundamental matter (of abortion) can be ignored," Ralph McInerny, a philosophy professor at Notre Dame, said in a March 23 column on his Web site, The Catholic Thing.
"For one whose 54-year career as a member of the Notre Dame faculty is coming to an end this June, it is a bitter thing to reflect on the 2009 commencement speaker," he said.
Jenkins pointed out that U.S. presidents from both parties have come to Notre Dame for decades to speak to its graduates about a wide range of pressing issues -- from foreign policy to poverty, from societal transformation to social service.
"We will honor Mr. Obama as an inspiring leader who faces many challenges -- the economy, two wars, and health care, immigration and education reform -- and is addressing them with intelligence, courage and honesty," he said.
"It is of special significance that we will hear from our first African-American president, a person who has spoken eloquently and movingly about race in this nation. Racial prejudice has been a deep wound in America, and Mr. Obama has been a healer," he said.
Jesuit Father Thomas J. Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Jesuit-run Georgetown University in Washington, said he found it curious that Notre Dame would receive so much flak about its choice of commencement speaker, given that no such outrage occurred when the archbishop of New York invited Obama to speak at the 2008 Al Smith dinner.
The annual see-and-be-seen political roast is named for the famed 1920s Catholic New York governor.
"This is absurd," Reese said in a statement. "If Cardinal Edward Egan of New York can invite Obama to speak at the Al Smith dinner in October of 2008 when he was only a presidential candidate, then there is certainly nothing wrong with Notre Dame having the president speak at a commencement.
"Other pro-choice speakers at Al Smith dinners included Al Gore and Tony Blair, a Catholic," he continued. "What is OK for a cardinal archbishop is certainly OK for a university."

Mr. Obama speaking at the Al
Mr. Obama speaking at the Al Smith dinner is different than Mr. Obama coming onto the campus of a Catholic University and delivering a speech. It would serve Notre Dame right if he concentrated his remarks on how this reflects the Church's new acceptance of Abortion rights and stem cell research. I genuinely hope that these are the themes that he chooses. Father Jenkins is unworthy to lead our University.
I fault our Bishops. The Bishops are silent on Catholic politicians that say Choice is alright with the Church?! They will not excommunicate these folks who just need to find a different Church, one that is accepting of their non-doctrinal point of view. In the same light, Notre Dame needs to be sanctioned. In fact, the Bishops should be encouraging parents to send their children somewhere other than my alma mater, the once great University of Notre Dame.
Dear Tim McGuire - Regarding
Dear Tim McGuire - Regarding your statement about "Father Jenkins is unworthy to lead our University." That is very nice that Notre Dame is your alma mater. Notre Dame is a school for learning. An invitation to the President of the USA has been extended to Obama, not for his views on abortion, or for your views on abortion. And, for a Catholic to pass judgment against the President of Notre Dame University an "unworthy" is to question his authority as an official for the school, not the Church.
Your desires to have people excommunicated are a sign that you think you have all the answers for everyone and if you don't like their answers, or don't understand them, the Church should just get rid of them. I wasn't raised as a Catholic to treat anybody like that. You should be ashamed of yourself. Should everyone bow down to you as the authority?
Agreed.
Agreed.
Agreed with Tim McGuire, that
Agreed with Tim McGuire, that is.
Thank you Bishop for your
Thank you Bishop for your rightful objection to the President speaking at Notre Dame. This would not happen at Stebenville College and should not be happening at any Catholic College. You can be sure that this will take a toll on their financial state. We conservative catholics are fed up with this kind of thing to say the least and know how to make it known by putting our money where our mouth is. What a shame for a College to sink so low, when there are so many other good life defending speakers who could do a better job. Whoever asked him to speak ought to be fired and never allowed him or her to be in a Catholic College position again. What must our "Noble Lady" think of such an insult. Obama is our enemy #1 and we have asked him in our camp. God help us. Valeria & Rodney Knier, WI
Good, I'm glad the the
Good, I'm glad the the University isn't going to bend and break due to a voal group of one-issue voters who claim to speak for the whole of the Catholic Church. Someone had sent me a link to the petition, and I absoutely declined to sign it - my gosh, I couldn't think of anyone I would want more to speak at my commencement than President Obama.
Not anyone?
Not anyone?
If "the inviolability of
If "the inviolability of human life" is the issue, I guess I too am a one issue voter. Why aren't you?
It is a disgrace to have him at Notre Dame. He advocates giving a choice to commit what the Church has termed an "unspeakable act." How many other unspeakable acts does Obama get a pass on?
Shame.
If "human life" means only a
If "human life" means only a fetus or unborn child then I would have to disagree. Violating human life (so-called innocent or otherwise) is evil. Supporters of war, capital punishment, slavery (I am including sweatshop workers and child laborers in third-world countries upon whom capitalism depends), those who rank human life based on how much like themselves the other person is: for example "American citizen vs. Somali pirate." If you can find someone that upholds the dignity of all human persons, ask that person to speak at your Catholic institutions, until then, Obama (who hopes to see an end to all abortion) will do just fine.
Given the current political
Given the current political stalemate on the issue, the only way to end abortion will be to move those who support it to change their positions. That won't happen through shrill denunciations and a refusal to have true dialogue.
Nixon, a staunch anti-communist, re-opened our relationship with China. Johnson, a southern Democrat, signed the Civil Rights legislation. It will doubtless take a Democrat to end abortion.
And, for the record, of the 10 justices appointed to the Supreme Court since 1973, eight have been appointed by Republicans and four of those have voted to uphold Roe. The continued survival of Roe is more the product of Republican indifference as it is one of Democratic intent.
It is certainly strange that Catholics are asked to disregard every other important issue in an election on the basis of the abortion issue, when the candidates we're supposed to vote for don't make a similar 100 percent commitment. McCain made it clear that a judicial candidate's position on abortion would be just one of many criteria used in selecting Supreme Court justices, which means it might not count at all. We're supposed to bet the bank on that kind of promise?!
Why should Catholics reward Republicans for their indifference any more than they penalize Democrats for their intent? Currently, since we accept Republican pro-life sentiments at face value, there's no incentive for them to actually achieve results.
Of course, if we focused on actual results, we'd have to admit that the abortion rate declined twice as fast under pro-choice President Clinton as it did under the supposedly pro-life President Bush. Republican-led welfare reform in the 1990s--in defiance of Catholic and pro-life protests--led to an increase in the abortion rate among poor women. The aftermath of Bush's failed domestic policies will undoubtedly be to further slow the decline in abortions and may lead to increases in the abortion rate for some segments of the population.
It should be possible to both oppose Obama's efforts to liberalize access to abortion and yet support his efforts to limit the number of abortions through social and economic policy. Similarly, we should be more forceful in criticizing Republicans for policies that deviate from Church teaching. By taking a more nuanced approach politically, by standing astride both political parties, rather than cowering in the far corner of one, the Church could gain more influence on both sides of the aisle.
In truth, both efforts to overturn Roe and efforts like Obama's toward abortion reduction are incrementalist in nature. Neither approach will succeed on its own. We need both, which means we need Democrats.
Let Obama speak!
Are you saying Notre Dame
Are you saying Notre Dame invited Obama and are giving him an honorary degree to convince him to outlaw abortion?
Catholics, wake up! Let he
Catholics, wake up! Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Why would we expect 100% adherence to Catholic doctrine, beliefs and practices from someone not even Catholic? We damage our credibility with such myopic babble.
What stones?
What stones?
I agree with Fr. Reese. I
I agree with Fr. Reese. I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I find it great that Notre Dame succeeded in having President Obama speak at the Commencement. All is the rest is monkeys throwing coconuts...
Is it nice to call people
Is it nice to call people monkeys?
My kuos to Notre Dame for not
My kuos to Notre Dame for not cowering in the face of ridiculous criticism from one issue Catholics. Would these same Catholics have had a problem with a speaker who believed in capital punishment, waging unjust war and cutting funding for the needy among other egregious acts? Obama is more pro life than the president who did all those things.
Are you speaking of Obama?
Are you speaking of Obama? It seems those are the very things he is doing now.
Huff and puff and the house
Huff and puff and the house does not even know there is a wind.!!
As a pro-lifer I am embarassed about how politically inept some bishops are.
RU 486 and plan b pills are all over the place. Abortion is a moral issue that needs outreach, clear preaching, conscious raising and support for bringing to term the birth. Some Bishops with their hysterical condemnations are only are speaking to the choir. Won't some Irish/American pol give them a seminar on how to get people to listen?
Ed, the problem I have is
Ed, the problem I have is that none of these wonderful moral absolutes about the bodies of women have been written by women. Easy for men to demand children be brought to full term in each and every circumstance. It's not men's lives on the line.
Why don't you demand men help raise their children to legal age. If you did that, women may be far more inclined to bring their children to full term.
Kudos to Notre Dame for sticking by their invitation. My hope is that President Obama will give a rip roaring speech on the evils of male abandonment.
The NCR heard Bishop D'arcy
The NCR heard Bishop D'arcy clearly - as evidenced in this article.
Good for Fr. Reese for
Good for Fr. Reese for pointing out the absurdity. I'm not about to let my Catholicism or Christianity be defined by my stance on one issue, nor should anyone else face such a ridiculous litmus test.
Roman Catholic? or just
Roman Catholic? or just catholic?
You may not, but the Church
You may not, but the Church does.
I must be in a different
I must be in a different world than those in favor of President Obama speaking at Notre Dame. But then all of my Catholic friends in Oklahoma are shocked that this pro abortion president would be invited to speak at such a prestigious Catholic school. Unfortunately neither our local archbishop or the USCCB, as of Tuesday evening, have commented on this travesty or provided any leadership to the flock. Abortion is not a one issue Catholic problem. Abortion claims innocent lives every day. And this President is abortions biggest booster. I pray for him.
"Yet, we see his visit as a
"Yet, we see his visit as a basis for further positive engagement." Really? Is the President coming to Notre Dame to listen or to speak? Of course he's coming to speak, not listen. So much for engagement with anything remotely Catholic at Notre Dame.
Would Notre Dame have given a
Would Notre Dame have given a degree to Stalin. I mean why not? Mass murder is of no concern, and he did have some fine social programs.
Amen, FuzzyR! Thank you.

Obama should have declined to
Obama should have declined to speak at the Notre Dame graduation due to Notre Dame's affiliation with the Catholic Church, which is at odds with Obama's beliefs regarding the status of women in society.
Obama should have made it clear that he is offended by the Catholic Church teaching that it is better for a woman to die from pregnancy complications than for her to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. He should have made it clear that he does not accept the Catholic Church teaching that it is better for a woman to die while attempting to abort her fetus than for her to have the abortion with no physical harm to herself and no punishment from the government.
Obama should also have made it clear that he will not accept an honorary doctor of law degree from a Catholic university, because it gives implicit affirmation to the Catholic Church's attempts to make the specifics of its moral discipline the law of the land to be imposed upon people with different or no religious affiliation.
Marie R, thanks for pointing
Marie R, thanks for pointing out that the moral stance of the Catholic church is rapidly losing all credibility as it clings to institutionalized sexism.
I cannot believe what i am
I cannot believe what i am reading from supposed catholics. Notre Dame is a Catholic University.Obama is a facilitator of abortion. he sanctions murder of innocents. He is against traditional values as he supports the sin of homosexuality. He endorses and has approved embyonic stem cell research. Freedom of conscience whereby health professionals need to perform/assist in abortions, euthanasia and other immoral acts is on his hit list..He is not going to NOTRE DAME to debate his positions , he is going to espouse his views.why should a man like this be given the honor of speaking at NOTRE DAME.He diminishes the values that it stands for ,while enhancing his own stature.Fr. Jenkins, by his invitation, has endorsed obama's anti catholic views.I pray that he will rescind the invitation and by doing so will send a clear message WE ARE AGAINST ABORTION AND THOSE WHO PROMOTE ABORTION. WE ARE PRO LIFE AND FOR TRADITIONAL VALUES. Is it not time for more catholic leaders to speak out and give us something to cheer about.
For those of you who feel it
For those of you who feel it is wrong or acting like a one issue voter, to object to the Obama invitation, the Church itself (the Vatican) and the U.S. Bishops have said you have to look at each issue and select the most important. Life, itself, is the most important issue. Many people who see that Notre Dame invited him to talk AND honor him with an honorary degree, will feel that the importance of abortion must not be that great.
It could result in many people having abortions that may not have done so.
Keep in mind, no president has been so liberal on abortion and embryonic stem cell research. Too many Catholics voted fot him and must be made to understand what the Church is saying; not a one issue voter, but one who does not want to help the taking of many innocent lives.
"Touchdown Jesus" and I both
"Touchdown Jesus" and I both have both hands up on this one. A "score" for Notre Dame in the contest against those who would make it a Catholic madrassa.
I have an idea. If you are
I have an idea. If you are eligible to attend Obama's commencement speech at Notre Dame and want to attend, go. If you don't approve of Obama and don't want to attend the speech (eligible or not), stay home. No one is forced to attend.
Obama's position on abortion
Obama's position on abortion is well known. But perhaps Notre Dame needs to develop a questionnaire loosely based on the Nicene Creed and the Baltimore Catechism and administer it to any and all persons who might ever speak there, so as to potentially weed out any and all heretics who views are not clear. After all, we want NOONE to speak at our place who does not adhere to every jot and tittle of Catholic belief.
What is the world coming to if we allow people with ideas different from our own at our centers of intellectual inquiry?
This is in clear violation of
This is in clear violation of the U.S. Catholic Bishops directive. Basically, the administration of Notre Dame is extending the middle finger to them.
Opponents should organize an alternative commencement. I am sure that they could get an exceptional speaker who volunteer their time. Who knows, maybe P.B.XVI might come.
Every comment has danced
Every comment has danced around the real issue with President Obama speaking at Notre Dame. He is the President of the United States of America, and he will not always endorse or agree with everyone, however he is still our president. Are we so deep-rooted in our prejudice that we still can not accept the fact that this nation has an african american leader. Where is your religious beliefs, we cannot continue to harbor hatred towards other races, we need to stand together. Abortion is not the only issue, I am sure there are others with views similiar or President Obama who attends notre dame. Get real people, I guess the next thing you will do is try to oust your school president because of his choice. You all should be ashamed.
I agree with Tom Reese, SJ.
I agree with Tom Reese, SJ. It seems a little hypocritical to me for Cardinal Eagan to invite Obama to speak at a fundraider for Catholic Charities and no one raised a voice but we cannot invite him, as President, to speak at a Catholic institution's commencment . The Church was willing to let him be a guest when they were raising money.
We in the western states of
We in the western states of catholic origin and or raising primarily stand 1st with our President. This brave man shoulders part of the worlds economy, imagine lives in your hand who seek fresh water from wells dug by volunteers from the peace corp, build things for trade with the free world And this means primarily and 1st the US.He inspires the world to listen again, can you imagine what it will be like to have this nation building person as your commencement speaker?
The same person who does not sleep at night for the worries of his countrymen laid on his chest?Who are we to judge?Remember the brutalizing act,the cuffing and torture of that wyoming murder where the very young gay man was found dead chained to barb wwire?Obama and I are the same, for we recognise that though abortion is untenable, yet we can not shove this ideal down a womens throat
Let women speak for themselves, let them decide,it is their right under our constitution and universal law of a womens right over her own body
Homosexuals were chained and tortured for spiritual purposes back in the day
God help me if I ever help sanction this "rightousness",in the name of what, really?God bless Obama,he has our economy, our spirit and our lives on his shoulders,YES WE CAN
