Cardinal: ministry to gays inauthentic teaching
WASHINGTON -- The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has denounced a Maryland-based organization for its criticism of Catholic efforts to defend marriage as the union of one man and one woman and said it does not offer "an authentic interpretation of Catholic teaching."
Cardinal Francis E. George of Chicago said that since the founding of New Ways Ministry in 1977, "serious questions have been raised about the group's adherence to church teaching on homosexuality."
"No one should be misled by the claim that New Ways Ministry provides an authentic interpretation of Catholic teaching and an authentic Catholic pastoral practice," Cardinal George said in a Feb. 5 statement.
"Like other groups that claim to be Catholic but deny central aspects of church teaching, New Ways Ministry has no approval or recognition from the Catholic Church and ... cannot speak on behalf of the Catholic faithful in the United States," he added.
New Ways Ministry, based in Mount Rainier, Md., describes itself as a "gay-positive ministry of advocacy and justice for lesbian and gay Catholics and reconciliation within the larger Christian and civil communities."
Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, said in a statement posted on his organization's Web site that the cardinal's words "will not impede or slow us in our efforts to work for justice for lesbian/gay people in the church and society."
Although he made no reference to the issue of same-sex marriage, DeBernardo said "for more than three decades, New Ways Ministry has had its programs reviewed by scores of Catholic bishops, theologians and pastoral leaders, and we have always been found to be firmly in line with authentic Catholic teaching."
In March 2009 DeBernardo testified before a Maryland House of Delegates committee against a proposed constitutional amendment that would have limited marriage to a man and woman and in favor of the Religious Freedom & Civil Marriage Protection Act, which would have given same-sex couples the right to marry.
"It would be a grave error in judgment -- both politically and morally -- for government leaders to assume that the Catholic hierarchy reflects the belief of most Catholic people," DeBernardo testified. "I ask that you follow the will of hundreds of thousands of Catholic Marylanders, not the few leaders at the head of the church, and protect the human dignity and civil rights of same-sex couples."
DeBernardo said he was "astonished that Cardinal George released such a statement" without contacting New Ways or informing the organization that it was being released to the press.
Cardinal George said that as far back as 1984, then-Archbishop James A. Hickey of Washington "denied New Ways Ministry any official authorization or approval of its activities," citing "the organization's lack of adherence to church teaching on the morality of homosexual acts."
"This was the central issue in the subsequent investigation and censure of the co-founders of New Ways Ministry," Cardinal George added. "This continues to be the crucial defect in the approach of New Ways Ministry, which has not changed its position" since then.
New Ways Ministry was co-founded in 1977 by Sister Jeanine Gramick and Salvatorian Father Robert Nugent, who were ordered by the Vatican in 1999 to stop their ministry to homosexuals because "ambiguities and errors" in their approach caused confusion for Catholics and harmed the church community.
After they continued to speak and write about homosexuality, the two were directed by their religious superiors in 2000 not to speak publicly or write about the topic or about the Vatican actions. Father Nugent accepted the discipline and is in parish ministry, but Sister Gramick refused and continues on the lecture circuit.
Because she defied the Vatican ban and faced expulsion by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, she left the order and joined the Sisters of Loretto in 2001. She made her final vows with her new order in June 2004, and is currently co-director of the National Coalition of American Nuns.
In his statement, DeBernardo urged New Ways supporters "not to give up hope in the Catholic Church, but to continue to pray and work for the day when lesbian/gay people are welcomed as full and equal members in our beloved church."

Tradition is one thing and
Tradition is one thing and unless periodically challenged is allowed to be the only thing. Perhaps relevant rather than traditional teachng would be a more appropriate frame-of-reference.
The issue is not about
The issue is not about tradition but about Truth. The Cardinal is pointing out to the flock that the New Ways ministry is not in line with the teachings of the Church. This is to protect people who might think there has been a change to the Church's teachings when there has been no change at all. The Church continues to tell all Catholics that outside the union of sacramental marriage we are called to be pure and chaste. Within the union of marriage there is to be mutual respect and giving of self.
Dennis, you posit that a
Dennis, you posit that a "relevant rather than traditional teaching would be a more appropriate frame-of-reference." My question to you, is: Relevant to whom? A person who identifies with the gay movement and wants to turn their fetish for Church-sanctioned genital activity into a moral norm? Or perhaps someone who looks at what the Church has always held, namely, that any sexual activity outside the bonds of marriage is wrong? If tradition is based on absolute truth, then it SHOULD be the only thing.
"...their fetish for
"...their fetish for Church-sanctioned genital activity..."
For a moment, I thought you were referring to all these future newlyweds pictured in our local church newspaper!
Especially the guys, perhaps?
Interesting topic,
Interesting topic, unfortunately the article does not identify the contents of the ministry were identified as "ambiguities and errors" in their approach caused confusion for the Catholic people and harmed the church community. In order to fully understand the view of the church, it would be beneficial to provide a description of the alleged problems.
Seems to me that the NCR
Seems to me that the NCR should have 'edited' the CNS headline.
Cardinal George did not say ministry to gays is inauthentic teaching but that a specific organization that ministers to gays was inauthentic in their teaching.
Gay ministry is already horribly misunderstood by most Catholics - why contribute to the confusion?
Why are these guys so
Why are these guys so preoccupied with homosexuality?
Because there are many
Because there are many homosexuals among the priesthood and they want to cover it up, as they did the abuse of children.
The people preoccupied with
The people preoccupied with homosexuality is the "gay" lobby which constantly tries to promote this lifestyle as normal and a valid choice.
The Church continues to teach that the only valid choice outside the married state is chastity and it applies to all unmarried Catholics regardless of their attraction whether it be hetero, homo or bi-we are all in the same boat we are to strive for chastity.
The Church continues to keep sex in perspective while the world continues to treat it like a false god.
Poor, George! Once again
Poor, George! Once again delivering one of his pharisaical pronouncements
on authenticity in the Catholic Church. And, once again putting his suede slipper into his eminently 'Big Mouth'.
New Ways Ministry may not lay claim to this prince of the church's blessing,
however it can lay claim to being in the trenches relieving the pain and
walking the walk of God's Children the way Jesus would have us all do.
Authentic or not it will continue to deserve my prayerful and financial
support.
I once again recall that the
I once again recall that the only time Jesus got upset, was when addressing the hierarchy of His day. I recall that Jesus' eventual reaction was to ignore them. He didn't even answer their questions at his crucifixion. My reaction to Cardinal George is similar: a stifled yawn. The Cardinal is simply ignorant. He and his old boys in the hierarchy have become so irrelevant as to be totally ignored. I long ago concluded that their ignorance, in this information age, is probably culpable and is consistently displayed.... not only by their actions (e.g. the sexual abuse scandal), but also by their language. The use of the term "inclination" is one small humorous sign of ignorance. The hierarchy's performance in recent years seems quite consistent with "infallible" Rome's handling of the Galileo affair. It's quite ludicrous. The "official" Church Magisterium has totally lost it's credence. In my view, the best response to ignorant bigots is to imitate Jesus...........ignore them. Maybe some day they will catch up, but they are far behind, same as they were on slavery. To be castigated by the hierarchy is something that should probably be welcomed. Not only are you in good company, but it means you are achieving broader recognition. I would say to News Ways Ministry: "Better notoriety than obscurity."
When He encountered a woman
When He encountered a woman being stoned for adultery He did not join in the stoning but He did not say continue in adultery either. Our same sex attracted brothers and sisters in Christ deserve our love and support not our denial of sin.
I can recall only 2 times in
I can recall only 2 times in the gospel when Jesus reacted with keen displeasure"Woe to those who scandalise my little ones" and "You have turned my Father's house into a market place"
So those who abused childre or those whose lives caused others to lose their faith or fail to be drawn to the faith ought to worry !
The Cardinal was simply pointing out a fact. The New Ways Ministry cannot be seen as Catholic because they are going against the Church's teaching on the issue of same sex attraction. The Church recognises that for some souls this is a powerful inclination but urges same sex attracted people to stive to be celibate and to make frequent use of the sacraments to help them carry their cross.
It will be interesting to see
It will be interesting to see how the institution responds when science proves that homosexuality is genetic. This is not a choice. So, what are people supposed to do, deny their orientation and pretend to be heterosexual when they are not, or embrace a celibate lifestyle when they are called to be in relationship. Science will eventually force the Church to re-examine their teaching on homosexuality. In the meantime, ministry programs that offer support to those who try to find peace in the midst of the contrast between what they know in their heart and what the Church currently teaches are necessary and compassionate. Kudos to Sr. Jeanine for not bowing to the power of the institution and for boldly standing in her truth!
How the condition of
How the condition of homosexual attraction comes about it of no issue to the morality of the homosexual act. If science proves homosexuality is genetically caused, that does not suddenly change Sacred Scripture or Catholic teaching on the impermissible nature of the act. Take for example alcoholism. It is thought by many scientists to be genetically caused (or at least there is a genetic predisposition). Yet despite this genetic condition, becoming intoxicated remains a sin and something to be avoided. The same is true of person who suffers from genetically caused homosexual attraction.
@ Ray Carl, re: "How the
@ Ray Carl, re: "How the condition...comes about"
OK, your argue has some merit. Of course the context of your claim that the "nature of the act" is a sin, is that vast horizon of acts which you and I perform each day which rank in the category of sin. It is a staple of the human condition to sin "7 times a day" regardless the seriousness of our efforts to love and obey God constantly.
So, since you've taken it upon yourself to condemn the "nature of the act" of persons in whose shoes you do not walk, how well might your own failures stand up to the same intense daily scrutiny?
The teachings of Christ and of the Church on faithfulness and freedom do not require perfect adherence, only adherence to the demands of the journey, the first of which, it might be fair to suggest, is to take care of the log in your own eye before you get all hot and bothered about the splinter in someone else's.
When you take to heart the abundance of mercy that is poured upon you, you may indeed discover that "how the condition of homosexual attraction come about" does, in fact, bear on the primary Christian demand for mercy and compassion, which virtues are the very heart of Christian moral teaching.
Love the sinner not the sin
Love the sinner not the sin
"The teachings of Christ and
"The teachings of Christ and of the Church on faithfulness and freedom do not require perfect adherence, only adherence to the demands of the journey"
The point the Cardinal is making is to warn Catholics taht the New Way ministry is in fact going against the teachings of Christ by arguing that they ignore or give up even trying to live out the call to chastity which applies to all Catholics who do not enter the married state.
Mah, I have to give you
Mah, I have to give you credit here. Indeed I was not right to say the cause of the condition (genetic or otherwise)had no bearing on the morality of the act--especially when speaking of the subjective person's accountability. What I was trying to get away from, however, was the trend to continually nuance Catholic morality until any action can be seem as properly permitted. I'm sure we are predisposed to commit most the sins we do commit because of various, uncontrollable factors in our lives. Maybe some even have a pre-disposition to rush to judgement! I believe the Church and the Scriptures condemn homosexual action out of love for the homosexual, as we might condemn drunkenness out of love for the alcoholic.
Comparing homosexuality with
Comparing homosexuality with alcoholism?
Fatally flawed comparison.
Comparing apples and oranges.
Not the same.
The scientific literature to
The scientific literature to date is not at all clear about what aspects of what we call "sexual orientation" are genetic (or "nature"), what aspects come from nurture, and what aspects come from a combination of nature & nurture.
The last time I re-read Kinsey, I wondered about his use of a Likert scale to get a sense of where his survey respondents self-identified - homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual. A Likert scale is not discrete; it offers a continuum of behaviors where a person can self-identify. Behavior on a continuum is very different from being offered one of 3 discrete orientations to identify with. The labels we attach to actual, human behavior - "gay," "straight," and "bi" do not begin to define or limit that behavior.
It is probably better to say that the actual number of sexual orientations among humans is equal to the actual number of humans. The Church is within its rights and responsibilities to all people to help identify what constitutes a self-donating sexuality rather than a self-adsorbed sexuality. Self-donation is sacrificial. Self-adsorbtion (sic) is, well, selfish. The Church's lower-bound measure of self-donation, in sexuality, in inter-personal relationship, in family and a larger sphere of relationship, is the nuclear family, which the Vatican II documents refer to as "the primordial cell of human society."
NCR's readers like to talk about Vatican II. Well, the Vatican II documents offer us a clear definition of & standard for the nature & quality of intimate relationships. If some people who call themselves Roman Catholic have another definition & standard to offer, it is the office of "oversight" in the Church - the Episcopate - to determine if that new definition & standard is authentically Catholic.
New Ways Ministries may think they have something to offer here. But if part of their thinking redefines, diminishes or excludes the Episcopal office of the Church, that is not a Catholic or Orthodox position. It sounds like an Anglican (with their notion of "distributed" or "difuse" authority), Episcopalian (by which I mean the American branch of the Anglican Communion), Lutheran or Congregational (e.g., the United Church of Christ) attitude. Perhaps New Ways would be happier associating itself with another Christian community - a community whose beliefs are consistent with its own.
I agree that human sexual
I agree that human sexual orientation is a continuum, like various manifestations of creation in general.
I think you offer an interesting distinction between "self-absorbed sexuality" and "self-donating sexuality." Where I must disagree is your suggestion that homosexuality, by its nature, is "selfish." I suspect many gay/lesbian sexual relationships demonstrate the incorrectness of your apparent view.
Just as with the slavery issue, the Vatican needs to update its teaching in this area in light of new findings, however tentative, in the life and social sciences, not to mention ordinary human experience as lived by gays and lesbians and those who know, love, and respect them.
Doctrine, by nature, is always evolving. Indeed, relevant parts of canons 212, 749, and 750 acknowledge this fact.
While the bishops, by definition, may be the official teachers, they can learn --- and must be prepared to learn --- from their fellow adults, lay and ordained alike. If they don't, life will leave them behind.
Dear Frank, Thank you and New
Dear Frank,
Thank you and New Ways Ministry for continuing to bring Love, and Hope to those so ruthlessly attacked by what is supposed to be a Universal Church. Did Jesus not come for us all? It seems Cardinal George and many others want the "Catholic" Church to be a private club and they alone hold the secret criteria for membership. If only the criteria could remain the "Spirit of Jesus", all those seeking Justice, Peace and Love in the world, would have a gold membership card!
Nature is the creation of God and all persons are an integral part of that nature and play a role in God's plan. We need a Church that honors God's creations more and their narrow views less. Holiness comes to all by being true to their God given nature. It is called being authentic! It is the essence of truth, the basis of humility, goodness and alignment with God.
Your response was true and touching. Let us continue to hope that someday the hierarchy will realize they have forgotten why "Our Savior" came and stop being so judgmental and more filled with the "One Commandment" of Jesus. Love others as I have loved you.
Keep up working for those who need it most.
I thought it supremely ironic
I thought it supremely ironic that yesterday, Cardinal George had all his Chicago Archdiocesan pastors beg for bucks for the diocese. I suspect that, given all the human rights leadership he's failed to exercise (you may have the same rights as others as long as you're heterosexual), he may receive a good number of empty envelopes with explanations as to why.
Keep those empty envelopes a'
Keep those empty envelopes a' comin' !!!
Perhaps one day, folks like this prince of the church will understand we mean business as we strive to bring renewal to a sick, dysfunctional institution.
TITHING = ENABLING.
Stop enabling.
I find quite often that
I find quite often that Bishop George's Catholic Church does not represent all Catholics. In fact, We Are The Church, and Bishop George is just an individual in the overall WE. His logic does not hold. Poor man... A rock battling the ocean.
It all began with a rock "Tu
It all began with a rock "Tu es Petrur" against the might of the Roman Empire!
Yes, and look how the "might
Yes, and look how the "might of the Roman Empire" corrupted the Church of Rome!
Wake up and smell the ecclesial stench.
Francis DeBernardo: "It
Francis DeBernardo: "It would be a grave error in judgment -- both politically and morally-- for government leaders to assume that the Catholic hierarchy reflects the belief of most Catholic people,” I just pray you're right.
The intrusion of the hierarchy of the Roman [not catholic] church into the Proposition 8 campaign makes The Reverend Red Guy's words all too familiar, and I'm afraid very many whose lives are controlled by this idolatrous and popalotrous cadre really believe that an institution has a particularly clear view into the mind of God. Not even Jesus claimed this and could end his life asking why God abandoned him--his hope was in the face of hopelessness, the only place it belongs.
If Jesus returned today as Dostoyevsky imagined, he would be condemned as a heterodox trouble maker who lived with those on the margins of society, who accepted each person unconditionally, and who knew that all which Eloihim had created was very good. (Gen 1) The Very Reverend Red Guy and his gang have a sharp nose for the whiff of evil within the greatest love; Goethe’s Mephistopheles had the same taste and talent. Is the Grand Inquisitor still alive and well? still serving the Tempter in the desert? still trying to correct all that Jesus got wrong?
Bob, It seems to me that you
Bob, It seems to me that you have hit the nail on the head. We have not one Grand Inquisitor but many, and I keep crying (as "starlight") that yes, many of these Guys are so wrapped up in "The Rules" that they wouldn't recognize Jesus if He suddenly walked down the street! In fact, Jesus told us, that He would be among us for all time, in those that were hurting and needed help, but sometimes it seems that THE MAIN WORK of Jesus has been ignored by the Church!
Why aren't the Bishops proclaiming LOVE to The People instead of proclaiming The Rules? Most of us Cradle Catholics KNOW that the clergy is more concerned with CONTROL than it is with CARING! (I know for a fact that Bishop George is not an uncaring man, and neither are many of the other Bishops, but I think, in the ongoing process of rising in the Church administratively and
assuming the mantle of the Hierarchy, they take on a "management" view, and lose sight of LOVE, taking the burden of SAVING SOULS of "SHEEP" (Hey, we're people--many of us better educated than you are...) far too seriously! This isn't "Back in the Day!" We need a more collaborative Model--as mentioned above---and no, we DO NOT want to change Chirches to have it!
So remember that old saw about the Bishops being "The Servants of the Servants of the People of God?" Well, we need for you to remember that, and remember that the People of God are not YOUR Servants---You are here to serve THEM (and I KNOW you are trying---probably working long hours...) But here's a thought--- YOU need to "lighten up" and approach everyone in a Christlike manner, which you appear to have forgotten. (You appear to have scared away my four children, my ex husband, and my grandchildren away with your rigidities instead of loving welcomes----so I am alone at Church, hanging on by a thread, saying my Memorores and Hail Marys, talking to my good Catholic girlfriends from school in the old days (one of whom tells me what a good man Cardinal George is because she knows him.) Trust. It's violated almost every day by these uncharitable statements. (And I am straight.) But as a licensed counselor, who has seen and heard so much authentic human suffering and courage for 30 years, I cannot call all of this "sin"!
How sad it is to insult people's genuine human dignity with this backward talk!
Please, be our Christlike Valentines, not our Inquisitors!
Lauri, your comment about
Lauri, your comment about "interesting to see how the institution responds when sceince proves that homosexuality is genetic" suggests that you agree with the commonly held opinion that the Magisterium's position is based upon the assumption that homosexuality is a matter of choice. That appears not to be the case. If my reading of their positon is correct, the condemnation of homosexual sexual relationships, even those that exist in a committed relationship, is based upon the same ratio as their condemnation of artificial prophylaxsis, namely that it countervenes one of the two primary purposes of a sexual relationship - the bearing of children.
Whether homosexuality is a matter of choice or genetic in nature is not part of their argument. The recommendation of a good number of the Roman Catholic ethicists I have read is that to avoid sin, homosexuals must remain celebate regardless of whether or not a choice is involved. This is obviously a different understanding that that of most Evangelicals who continue to condemn homosexuality as inherently sinful. I know of no Catholic ethicist who considers the desposition of homosexuality to be in and of itself sinful.
Not only the same sex
Not only the same sex attracted person but the unmarried person must remain celibate to avoid sin.
The human race has been designed to survive by the natural outcome of the sexual act between a man and a woman.God designed it that way.
Humanity usually ends up in a mess when it goes against God's design or tries to play God. Remeber Hitler with all his Aryan supremacy nonsense?
Is not "intrisicly
Is not "intrisicly disordered" an ethical position?
Do we know that the gospels
Do we know that the gospels are 100% accurate? Are we to assume that Constantine, a Roman emperor who continued to worship the unconquered Sun, not change some of the practices of Roman Catholics so that Romans would not commit acts of civil disobedience that would occur if they followed Jesus' teachings.
So what is authentic? Is what is authentic to the church authentic to the teachings of Jesus, the Christ?
It sounds as if you are
It sounds as if you are picking up ideas from that piece of fiction the Da Vinci Code!
The practices of Roman Catholics arise from the teachings of the Magisterium Following you logic the Church should be following the heretical ideas of Arianism because Constantine thought Arius was right but when the Council of Bishops decided Arius' ideas were an heretical departure from the teaching of Jesus. Constantine accepted the Bishop's decision.
The early Church did have trouble with "bogus" gospels and commentaries being written and another council drew up the list or canon of gospels that were true to Christ's teachings. Never forget Jesus' promise He will be with His Church till end times and the gates of hell shall never prevail against Her.
With all of the scandal in
With all of the scandal in recent memory, plus in the past, perhaps the church needs to be denounced! Beware lest your cross becomes the devil's mousetrap!
Doesn't that remind you of
Doesn't that remind you of the way Jesus responded to outcasts in his day? "Stay away from me and my Father, you do not deserve us." Whatever has happened to our biblically rooted tradition?
Good job Cardinal George!
Good job Cardinal George! Keep up the good work! We love you!
DeBernardo should be ashamed of creating such scandal, saying that the Church teachings on morality do not actually matter to the Catholics that hold them. Shameful. of course many of those Catholics In Name Only (CINO) are posting here on this.
Catholics, especially a
Catholics, especially a Cardinal, need not fear looking outside the box.
But first we need to reflect on what Jesus meant when he said: “judge not and yourself will not be judged”. How did so many Catholics become so fearful of looking outside the box? Why are some of us so negatively and militantly oriented? Here is what the previous (1969) Catechism had to say about homosexuality: “It is not the fault of the individual if he or she is not attracted to the other sex. The causes of homosexuality are unknown. In their human isolation, they look for friendship. But where they find true and loyal responses, the perfect fulfilment of their human longings is not granted them”.
How did a religion become so fearful of homosexuality, that in its blindness it cannot bring compassion and understanding to its people?
Should the Church not practise and teach people that true respect for life must include a life from the alpha to the omega free of racial, sexual, religious, political, cultural and gender biases?
Bert the Church's teaching is
Bert the Church's teaching is a deposit of Sprit guided wisdom and Christ's Truth. The Church has never stopped preaching love the sinner not the sin. Yes our compassion for our same sex attracted brothers and sisters in Christ has grown because we now realise how heavy a cross this can be for them but we and they must trust in Jesus He never leaves us without sufficient grace to carry our own unique cross. It is not love to tell a same sex attracted catholic live the lifestyle it is love to tell themthat is a very heavy cross how can we help which is exactly what the late Father John Harvey did by founding a ministry called Courage. It takes the courage of a lion to be a celibate same sex attracted Catholic and I believe their heroic virtue will save many souls including their own.
Reading this article today
Reading this article today (Tuesday) after reading today's Gospel (Mark 7: 1 - 13). Seems Jesus didn't always follow all the rules of 'the tradtion' or the elders. What if he had? And, to give a reply to Bishop George, Jesus was always about the poor and displaced and mis-understood. I wonder if Jesus would be in the office with Bishop George or working with New Ways Ministry?
In my mind - there is no question.
all about Truth.
all about Truth.
When will the Vatican stop
When will the Vatican stop trying to silence the Catholic Faithful.
We have been faithful and listening for years and we also are capable of interpreting the Scriptures and the words and life of Jesus. When Jesus gave "the keys" to Peter he didn't mean that only men from that day forward held "the keys" to understanding the Word of God.
No where in the 10 commandments or in the 2 commandments of Jesus (Love God and neighbor), does it tell us homosexuality is in itself sinful.
He does say to love and take care of the widows, the orphans, the prisoners, and to put down the sword. He does say to love your enemies and to forgive them and to put down the sword. Maybe the Vatican and the Bishops and the Cardinals could spend more time interpreting the Catholic Church's role in these clear mandates of Christ. The compassion of Christ is not imitated by driving sisters away from the church. Sometimes I think the Vatican is afraid to listen to the faithful people. In order to "let the Spirit lead" it is necessary to listen.
God, help our hearts and minds listen to your spirit.
Keep us united in you.
Concetta
Concetta Remember Jesus said
Concetta Remember Jesus said "Blessed are the pure of heart" How did God design us? He made a male and female to complement one another physically. There is no physical complementarity for same sex attracted lovemaking It is simply not part of the design. What is something that goes against God's design? Surely it is sin? Jesus could have entered humanaity by being delivered by a stork if He had so chosen Instead He chose to allow the Holy Spirit to overshadow the Vigin Mary Why? Surely it is God's support of the family unit. Jesus was brought up by a male Joseph and a female Mary.
Same sex attracted souls who live the "gay" lifestyle act outside God's plan and design.Lucifer was the first to resent aspects of God's design.Jesus loves us all and if someone battles with same sex attraction if they turn to Jesus , Mary and Joseph they will find all the love and support they need to live a celibate lifestyle and real peace and joy. If someone is an alcoholic you don't encourage them to keep drinking nor should anyone encourage someone to engage in the "gay" lifestyle.
I continue to be amazed that
I continue to be amazed that the Hierarchy, those leaders of the Church who have the power to make such pronouncements, never seem to consider the families of gays and lesbians when doing so. Parents, good, practicing Catholics, love every child in their family. If one should have a homosexual orientation, reasonable parents would want them to have the same civil benefits and protections as their other children; plus the spiritual direction appropriate for their homosexual orientation. If their homosexual child finds a partner they wish to spend their life with, this can be a joy for the parents and siblings; another welcomed addition to the family circle.
However, Catholics are too often thrown into confusion and despair when they are told that one of their children is gay--all because of the traditional teaching about the evil of homosexual acts. It takes a crash course in homosexuality, and many months, or years, for parents to work through the incongruities of Church pronouncements.
I know some parents who have disowned, or who refuse to speak to their child (even in their 40,s or more) because of what "the Church teaches about homosexuality." But I know even more Catholics who have left the Church rather than deny the goodness of their son or daughter. Parents know their children better than the Bishops do. Does the Church really care about families? Does it presume that homosexuals are free-floating entities without parents and siblings who are also affected negatively by hierarchial pronouncements? New Ways Ministry should be congratulated for its mission to help Catholic sons and daughters, and their parents to work through a difficult time in their lives.
Well stated E. Louise!!! As
Well stated E. Louise!!! As a parent of a "baptized" gay son, your words ring so true. Our children are baptized members of the Body of Christ, different by design, born in the image and likeness of God, and gifts to our Catholic communities. New Ways Ministry was the face of hope, love and compassion when I was grappling with the conflicting messages (spoken and unspoken) of the Catholic Church on human sexuality. It was their ministry that comforted and showed me the Light of Christ and how embrace being a "fortunate family", one with a gay child. The Hierarchy would be gravely shortsighted to denounce a ministry so badly needed in today's world. It is a sad reminder of how often God's gifts go left unopened. The statement reeks of homophobia and misunderstanding. God grant us patience and God Bless New Ways Ministry.
Why oh why does someone, like
Why oh why does someone, like the Cardinal and so many other 'shepherds' of the people, consistently get things wrong? The teaching of the Church, on matters sexual, has long since lost any credibilty it once had (or perhaps never had?) and our bishops drag this teaching ever more deeply into fur and feather land.
People have stopped living
People have stopped living according to those teachings and that is why we have the scandalous abuse and general weakenig of witness.
If every one was chaste we would have no unwanted abandoned abused or aborted children. If every priest and religious obeyed his/her vows we would have no abuse victimes. If every marriage was truly sacramental and firmly gounded in mutual respect and prayer we would have no domestic violence or divorce.Truth has not lost its credibility we have.
USCCB President Cardinal
USCCB President Cardinal George’s statement opposing New Ways Ministry is as disingenuous as NWM’s claim that it supports Catholic sexual morality. As documented in my book, The Rite of Sodomy, New Ways is only incidentally religious, i.e., it uses religion solely for the political ends of the Homosexual Collective within and without the Church. Yet it has never lacked for support from the American hierarchy including Bishops Gumbleton, Sullivan (Walter), Clark, Povish, McRaith, Costello (Thomas), Buswell, Symons, Untener, Weakland, Quinn (Francis), Wuerl, Mattheisen, O’Keefe, Imesch, McNamara, Hughes, Morneau, Lucker, Friend, Cummins, Murphy (Francis), Rodimer and Rosazza. NWM could never have survived without the active support of the Salvatorians, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, and numerous other Catholic religious orders. The NCCB/USCC (USCCB) of “The Many Faces of AIDS” fame, has long been the object of clerical homosexual colonization and has worked closely with NWM in the past. NWM Exec. Director Francis DeBernardo himself was a reporter for The Tablet, the diocesan paper of the Brooklyn Diocese. Finally, why does Cardinal George claim that the CDF put Sr.Gramick out of commission when she continues her pro-lesbian/homosex propaganda under the auspices of the Sisters of Loretto and their “Gay Ministry Fund?” PS For the record, the USCCB statement is not only misleading, it’s also 32 years too late.
Many of us had no idea that
Many of us had no idea that there were people and organisations claimimg to be catholic who were actively working in denial of Catholic teaching but hopefully more clear warnings and whatever other action that is required to protect the flock from false shepherds and false teachin will take place.
How very sad that this is the
How very sad that this is the focus of the hierarchy of the church! It causes me heartache to know from first hand experience that a portion of our society (homosexuals) are shunned by a church who was established to represent Jesus. As the proud parent/sister/cousin/niece of homosexuals, it is so very difficult to plow through the hierarchy and focus my beliefs on Jesus' teachings. When will we ever learn???
It is difficult but not
It is difficult but not impossible. Love the sinner not the sin.Do we love adultery, pedophilia, rape, incest? Every use of the sexual gift outside of marriage is sinful behaviour whether it be masturbation, premarital sex, extramarital sex or a same sex encounter.
You can love and admire someone and you are not to judge anyone but you cannot say sin is not sin just to keep the world happy.
The best thing we can do for anyone we love caught up in the gay lifestyle is to never stop loving them and pray for them every day.
Cardinal George and the
Cardinal George and the Catholic Church’s hierarchy seem suspiciously pre-occupied with homosexuality. I wonder why? Do they know something that we don’t know? Are they trying to conceal something, that they are afraid will come to light, if they don’t maintain a façade of protestation about homosexuality? We already know that the Church’s leadership has a dreadful fear of eliminating celibacy and permitting priests to marry. Officially, they won’t even talk about it.
As a parent of a "baptized"
My homosexual friends and
My homosexual friends and families are supported by Catholic people who realize that they are equal and deeply loved. That is the gospel message. Stating that you love without a sense of justice is simply tyranny. Like slavery and discrimination against women, the heirachy of the Catholic Church is an embarrassment. Their understanding of human sexuality is from the dark ages. If the core values of Jesus Christ were not there I would have left a long time ago.
For me, the ambiguity and
For me, the ambiguity and confusion lie more in the realm of why the official church of Jesus is abandoning these children of God. I say Amen to anyone who prayerfully reaches out to them and shows them love and acceptance of Jesus.
USCCB President Cardinal
USCCB President Cardinal George’s statement opposing New Ways Ministry is as disingenuous as NWM’s claim that it supports Catholic sexual morality.
As documented in my book, The Rite of Sodomy, New Ways is only incidentally religious, i.e., it uses religion solely to advance the political ends of the Homosexual Collective within and without the Church.
