Priest ordered to leave partner of 46 years
by Tom Gallagher on Nov. 14, 2011
The Dutch Catholic Church has ordered an 81-year-old priest to leave his partner of 46 years or be forced to quit the priesthood, the Den Bosch diocese in the central Netherlands announced on Friday.
According to the New Zealand Herald:
Jan Peijnenburg's relationship with Threes van Dijck, 85, was unacceptable to other priests, the Church said.
"We are giving him the choice: either he leaves his partner or he leaves the priesthood," diocese spokesman Michiel Savelsbergh told AFP.

HYPOCRISY ON STILTS
HYPOCRISY ON STILTS ........... Thanks, Tom. For the real story on the pervasiveness of homosexuality among priests and bishops, please note the masterful brief article recently written by the world's leading clinician dealing with sexually abusive bishops and priests, accessible by clicking on at:

This may all be about to change, Tom. For more information on some positive developments, please note the NCR comment and related cross links under the comment heading, "US ELECTION AND SEX ABUSE WAR" , accessible by clicking on at:

Do you know, it wasn't till I
Do you know, it wasn't till I read your comment, Jerry Slevin, that it sank in that the priest was in a homosexual relationship? It doesn't really matter to me because a 46 year relationship is obviously a committed relationship that includes a lot of love. No one seems to write about - or care - if he was a good priest, if the parishners had their spiritual needs met because he was there for them, straight or gay, celibate or not.
For your information, Threes
For your information, Threes (Theresa) van Dijck is a woman, if this makes a difference to you.
I STAND CORRECTED ........
I STAND CORRECTED ........ My apologies to NCR readers for the gender error. But the hypocrisy point remains valid. As Richard Sipes' and other reliable researchers have made clear, there is also a significant percentage of Catholic clerics in clandestine heterosexual relationships, which is both to be expected and accepted if they are in faithful loving relationships.
What is not acceptable is the hypocrisy. The Roman clique must be well aware of the pervasive rejection in fact by clerics of mandatory celibacy. It appears the reason that few clerics complain about mandatory celibacy is that many of those who find it objectionable, just disregard its prohibitions. Meanwhile, the Roman clique nonstop lectures the laity on when, how and with whom they can share faithful sexual intimacy. FUGETABOUTIT !!
church tells these elderly
church tells these elderly "FUHGEDABOWDID" regarding paying their mounting health insurance costs as they grow elderly and infirm, putting the old and infirm out of doors.
"the pervasive rejection in
"the pervasive rejection in fact by clerics of mandatory celibacy"
Pervasive? As in "spread throughout"? What data have you to back up that claim?
None, I trust.
Jerry, it is acceptable also
Jerry, it is acceptable also because of the spurious brother/sister relationships acceptable at Canon Law, totally hypocritical with the mentality of Confession, where one has to make a firm resolve from recommitting the same "sin" when constantly placed in the occassion thereof.
Especially where a child is involved, confirmed when put before the Judicial Vicar of Victoria and Tasmania Australia, back in 2001.
No wonder there are so many clergy living on the edge of sanity, especially when they have requested a rescript of vows through valid process with full support of their Minister Provincial, and refused due to the "evident danger of scandal", [correspondence dated October 24 2007], with salutations to the much respected [and sympathetic towards clergy], deceased Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Ambrose De Paoli: +Albert Malcom Ranjith, Archbishop Secretary, Congregation for Divine Worship......Prot.n.606/07.
He didn't even refer to the relevant clergyman as Fr........but as Mr.....
To conclude with: "Your Excellency's understanding of this decsion is requested.....

Wow! There's a whole bunch
Wow! There's a whole bunch of ugly double-standard and blatant hypocrisy going on within this ultimatum directed at at an elderly retired priest in a long-term committed adult relationship with someone he loves. They aren't bothering anybody and the priest is no longer in active parish ministry.

Too bad that the Vatican and its bishop minions weren't/aren't as eager to deal in similar fashion with child rapists and their prelate accomplices. The endless obfuscation and foot-dragging in the latter venue is now legend and continues to unfold.
.
Vatican documents reveal that a serial priest-rapist who terrorized a boys school for the deaf was intentionally allowed to go to his grave and be buried with full priestly honors. The Vatican cash-cow Maciel was allowed to plunder women and children for decades until his scandalous behavior became too hot to handle, threatening to bring down the whole Vatican State. Cardinal Law recently had a posh birthday bash in his Vatican sanctuary, while his buddy Levada enjoys his post as prefect of CDF. A recent report from the USCCB reveals that its members are attempting to ignore their 'Finn problem' and dismiss it with the statement: "what goes on in Kansas stays in Kansas" ...And the list is endless.
.
What a bunch of self-serving hypocrites! Small wonder that a recent survey of RC pew peons reveals that a large segment of them are now too disgusted to even bother being angry anymore. They've figured out the name of the game, and it has nothing to do with morality.

"Do as we say, not as we
"Do as we say, not as we do."
The behavior of the people involved tells us what they really believe -- money, power, and deference!
Aileen, the going thing is
Aileen, the going thing is the"brother/sister relationship, acceptable at canon law. The hypocracy is, the confessional is the "three's".
In Australia, where women have been involved with clergy some for decades, to sign those off who have given birth to clergy's children, it's a consenting relationship, bad luck: a clergymans whore, a Jezabel or sex-abuse. The latter is the punch word if they're trying avoid the fact the priest wants to leave with due process and take on his responsabilities within the family he has created.
It's easier to keep them in if they can get it down to that level.
Why is this a surprise? You
Why is this a surprise? You don't have to be a priest and you don't have to be married, but you can't be both in the Latin rite. Let him choose and move forward.
You know, if I were part of a
You know, if I were part of a group whose leaders I hated and never stopped complaining about, I'd probably leave and start my own group with all likeminded people (hint hint).
Just a hint: God is Love
Just a hint: God is Love (sounds familiar?)
Your "hint" is based on a
Your "hint" is based on a flawed premise. It is precisely love for the Church, and specifically God's people who are the Church, which requires the faithful to speak up when leadership's behavior is causing harm to the body. The Church is NOT just comprised of bishops and popes. Neither is the Church merely "a group".
.
The unfortunate fact is that, historically, bad behavior and outright corruption within the Church was not corrected by the "leaders" at the top. It has always been the case that those at the bottom of the pecking order (non-clergy) were the prophetic agents of calling-out corruption among those who hold unbridled power, and were also prophetic agents of cleaning it up. Read your Church history. Any coward can run away or stick their head in the sands of denial... it takes moral courage to stay and do battle to save the Church from its leaders and their abusive behaviors.

1. The bible tells us bishops
1. The bible tells us bishops are to have one wife, and by showing how well they manage their children and household, their good MARRIAGE indicates their bishop suitability.
2. The apostles such as Peter and Junia were MARRIED.
3. Paul said he had a right to a WIFE just LIKE the OTHER apostles.
Crazy RCC popes never read the bible. Get out of peoples bedrooms and their domestic lives socalled celibate men who pretend no-sex-we-are-priests.
Thank God this fellow was a heterosexual. Besides how do we know ir has not been platonic all these years and still is. Queen Liz the First had many relationships with men and was a virgin till her death.
Smarten up hierarchy and do not laicize or threaten this retired priest. Jesus would not approve of your unloving bullying behavior.
READ the bible and realize MARRIED clergy is fine! Stop your ignorance and cruel stupidity.
Vatican = Garbagecan. The pope is ignoranr od scripture and wrong!
It isn't clear why the
It isn't clear why the "other" priests found the relationship unacceptable, e.g.,would they have objected if it were homosexual.
Gee, it only took these
Gee, it only took these priests 46 years to be offended? Give me a break. What's the big rush now, all of a sudden? Apparently the Church's motto is "Now I'll stick out my foot again, and shoot myself, again."
