Obama and Common Good

President Obama held a rally for health care reform today at George Mason University in Virginia. The most compelling part of his message was -- for me, at least -- his appeal to the moral issue of ensuring the common good.

"It's a debate that is not only about the cost of health care," he said. "It's a debate about the character of our country -- about whether we can still meet the challenges of our time; whether we still have the guts and the courage to give every citizen, not just some, the chance to reach their dreams."

That’s the gut of the issue… deciding that we as a society will provide everyone, rich or poor, old or young… with the health care they need. It’s a vision of the common good, something integral to the Catholic tradition, and many other faith traditions as well.

On the other hand, the core of the opposition to health care reform is not about abortion, or costs, or fear of mythical “government takeovers”. I am convinced that opposition, in its most basic form, is fueled by those who don’t want to lower their profits, or share resources with people who do not have health care, or can’t afford it. They rarely say that out loud; it sounds bad… not sharing, not caring about the poor. But it’s there, and it’s loud and it’s ugly.

But come Sunday’s vote… it will not win.

Ok, Sister Maureen, let's put

Ok, Sister Maureen, let's put "abortion, costs, and mythical 'government takeovers'" aside, do you think creating a generation of deadbeats by allowing children to remain on their parents' insurance plans until they are 26 years old a "vision of the common good, something integral to the Catholic tradition, and many other faith traditions as well"?

As a sister, you have never had to worry about such "worldly" things such as having to find a job, a place to live, and buying clothes (although I'm sure you get a clothing allowance nowadays). You have also never had to worry about health insurance either. All of these things are provided you, just as long as you profess your "vow" of "poverty." So, what gives you the right (or the competence) to dictate to people with real jobs with insurance what is best for them? You may be a sister, but you speak with zero moral authority.

I am sorry that TNCath

I am sorry that TNCath doesn't think being a Sister is a 'real job.' And it's odd that TNCath doesn't think a Sister is entitled to speak with moral authority. And I'm further startled that TNCatholic doesn't see what a Sister may get in-kind from her House as simple enabling Sister to perform her duties without starving or freezing ... Sisters engage in performing necessary duties in lieu of being able to get a 'better' job by TNCath's lights.
I must confess I am not horrified that my children may be able to insure their children until those children get out of college. Not a bad idea at all. We did that for them as long as we could.
Individualism, hedonism, minimalism ... America's greatest sins. What's in it for me, does it feel good, is it the least I must do ... and asking anything more than that from me as unjust. Jesus must weep.

Being a Sister is not a

Being a Sister is not a "job," it is a vocation, and the vocation and life Sister Maureen had when she entered the convent bears no resemblance to the life she is living today. Sister does not have the right to speak with moral authority because she does not speak for the Church; she speaks for a strangely post-Christian humanism that is outside the Church and therefore not a valid expression of the Church. And, in the end, her community will go to its demise for this very reason. Mark my words: they will come to an end.

As for your children being able to insure their children, I take it you don't mind your grandchildren being raised to be deadbeats who never have to assume responsibility because they will be taken care of until they are 26. And then what? what becomes of them then? To the government's health insurance (welfare) rolls? This, my friend, is definitely not individualism, but it is hedonism and minimalism. And your children will be paying dearly for it.

Our Friday Rosary this

Our Friday Rosary this evening of Lent will be that we all receive access to true and comprehensive Health Care.

Care.
Caring.
Compassion.
What happened to all that stuff?

Thank you very much Sister Feidler for sharing your deep wisdom and for keeping us so well informed.

You are blind if you believe

You are blind if you believe that Obama and the other democrats are not profiting on this. I do not believe in their "altruistic" motives. Don't fool yourself that people are not making money on this and making money for their friends. This is Washington politics. If you think this is about health care, it is not. Just ask doctors and nurses, the ones who deliver health care. The Common Good sounds like a socialist agenda item to me.

This is WELL

This is WELL SAID!!!!

This Bill is better than nothing.......and one "next step" is
for building high personal, ethical, moral, spiritual IDEALS
AND ACTION WHEREVER WE ARE.

Then why not compose a bill

Then why not compose a bill primarily for those who don't have health care? And not take away from those who are ok with the health care they have? Because it is about delegating heath care, greed, and a power grab. Same as always..just buy the votes of the congress and ignore the American voters.

Nothing in the bill will take

Nothing in the bill will take anything away from those who like their existing, privately-provided insurance.

It will be reversed by a new

It will be reversed by a new congress this time next year, in my opinion. Not only will the bill not help current poor people, it will send many of the middle class into the poor house. And after it is reversed next year, any congressman or woman who gave their vote for a special deal should then be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. People who are losing their jobs by the thousands every day and those close to it have had enough of these politicans, their corruption, and their lies. And if the voters are not certain if their current senator or representative voted for the bill (because they will likely try to hide that as well), simply vote for their opponent. You have to have accountability for the system to work. Right now, we don't have that from our so called leaders.

Kill Obamacare, it is an

Kill Obamacare, it is an "Obamination". This is the most corrupt regime that this country has ever had. The use of illegal Chicago style politics to avoid a proper vote on the bill is truly the most despicable.
The majority of people adamantly oppose this bill and only 37% support it.

Vote out everyone who votes for this and impeach those not up for election this year!!!!

COMMON GOOD? Take a look at

COMMON GOOD?
Take a look at THESE numbers and be afraid, Maureen, be very afraid:

I am appalled by some of the

I am appalled by some of the comments I've read, which seem to be based upon highly emotional, deeply honest, errors of fact. There's been a great deal of propagandizing around this issue, various interested parties having apparently decided that it's perfectly proper to lie through their teeth if it gets them what they want. Indeed, Josef Goebbels would be very pleased by the tactics some major public voices have used.

There is no proposed federal take-over of health care. No one is proposing that hospitals should belong to the government. No one is proposing that doctors become government employees. No one is proposing that drug manufacturing be a federally owned process.

There is a proposal that health insurers not be able to deliberately insure only those who won't get sick. There is a proposal that nearly everyone will have health insurance, which means you and I will no longer be subsidizing care of the uninsured through real estate taxes and higher medical bills.

There is a proposal that private medical insurance companies will no longer be able to sell Medicare at a profit.

Yes, there's a proposal that families will be able to provide insurance for their children through the end of college education.

10 billion dollars allocated

10 billion dollars allocated for the hiring of 16,000 plus IRS agents to enforce it. Is that also for the "common good"?

This long term goal of this

This long term goal of this bill is about less people taxing the system, and the system taxing the people into poverty. Kill more of the unborn and less people are born. Deny the elderly what that need and let their sickness overtake them, right when the baby boom generation begins to retire in 2011. And ensure those in the middle behave according to the rules and we might be allowed to live. We all should be appalled, right into the voting booth this November.

how is more abortion for the

how is more abortion for the common good sister? and why is abrtion in health care? isnt it your only job to serve and defend Jesus and all his poor people, mother and child both, and not abandon the children? even the worst of us sinners sees that it is wrong. why cant you? youre supposed to be a be a follower of Jesus but you set a bad example for people.

this bill will lead to less

this bill will lead to less abortion. Or haven't you been reading NCR?

Ill vote for a congressman or

Ill vote for a congressman or senator who calls for prosecuting other congressmans or senators who sold their heath care vote. Throw the dishonest rascals in jail.

The unborn aren't going to

The unborn aren't going to find much "common good" in Obamacare's institutionalization of abortion -- whether the Great Messiah in the White House or Sr. Fiedler think otherwise.

We cannot afford this bill!

We cannot afford this bill! If it goes into effect, our economy will tank and we will have a worst depression then the Great Depression. The suffering and death are about to increase substantially. St. Joseph, we pray for your protection.

I wish the nay sayers would

I wish the nay sayers would think about how Jesus acted when he traveled on earth. He showed compassion for all who came within his range. True He got angry with the money changers in the Temple, but they were taking advantage of poor Jews who wanted to worship God. Some of the narrow, conservative' christian republicans are like the money changers. They have little regard for those who are poor or in need of health care. I have been around a long time and ever since I can remember the republicans have been against social policies that will help people; social security, medicare, medicaid and many other programs which would benefit those in need. Hopefully the Bishop's will support their own social policies, especially since abortion is not supported in this bill.

Well written Sister and it

Well written Sister and it seem that many of the critics of your comments are showing their lack of compassion for those in need. Too bad Jesus is not back on earth to show ust the "Way."
