The church simply doesn't get
The church simply doesn't get it that there is not a direct connection between sexual abuse and a celibate priesthood. Married people, (mostly men), abuse just as single people do. Sexual abuse is a deviant behavior (mental illness) and pedophilia is more extreme example of the same disorder. It is an extremely difficult disorder to control/heal. This behavior happens across all socio-economic lines It is not unique to the church; catholic or otherwise.
Optional celibacy is a great idea for the priesthood; an idea who's time came centuries ago!
