Law, theology professor Cathy Kaveny on Jon Stewart's 'Daily Show'

Cathy Kaveny, a Commonweal magazine contributor, chatted with Jon Stewart on Thursday on the about the role of bishops in selecting which aspects of the Catholic doctrine to teach within their diocese. Kaveny also reviewed the history behind the Catholic church's position on contraception and capital punishment.

Part two:

MISLEADING , REALLY !

MISLEADING , REALLY ! ........ Cathy really overplays the collegiality of bishops. Would that they were collegial, instead of too often being the papal puppets they really are.

Kathy disappointingly merely parrots the US bishops' (and Notre Dame's President's) anti-contraception line, without meaningful analysis and with several rambling distractions. Daily, who is not a Catholic, hardly realized how badly he had been spun.

For a better indication of how Paul VI really operated on forbidding contraception, please read the NCR article accessible by clicking on at:

I agree, Jerry. It was the

I agree, Jerry. It was the usual hypocritical centrist Catholic song and dance, which pretends

1) that our bishops still have credibility as moral teachers, and

2) that "we Catholics" don't practice contraception and stand together in respecting a teaching we've long since rejected.

They seem constitutionally unable to be honest about these issues, the centrists.

And it's not to their credit.

Nor does it help the church.

I think it is worthwhile to

I think it is worthwhile to note that the last time women, married men and medical professionals were consulted (67-68) Paul VI chose to disregard the commutative wisdom of their recommendations. And they wonder who is walking away from whom.

GO IRISH! "We try to be

GO IRISH!
"We try to be unpopular with EVERYBODY!"
Great quote, Dr. Kaveny.
"Vatican II - great sequel!"
Great quote, Mr. Stewart.

the real story is the Rush

the real story is the Rush vs. Catholic Law Student story, with our President Obama defending the CAtholic law student from the Limbaugh persecution.

Here is a paragraph:

"In addition to her call from the president, the third-year Georgetown University law student, Sandra Fluke, was backed by members of Congress, women's groups, and the administration and faculty at her Roman Catholic university."

thanks for putting this up on

thanks for putting this up on your blog, ....a very grounded conversation and interview. Joe

Kaveny claims that she stays

Kaveny claims that she stays a Catholic because in the church "every human being matters. Is that really true?--"that every human being matters". What about gays. What about abused children. What about women.

For a professor from Notre

For a professor from Notre Dame - my alma mater - to speak on Humanae Vitae
without even mentioning the fact that the Sensus Fidelium has also spoken on the matter is shocking. I am led to believe that she has joined the Hierarchy
in communio by conveniently not mentioning it. Any academic study of such a polarizing matter should be meticulous in covering all the bases. I have
noted that ND has taken a severe rightward turn since the seventies. How I wish they had continued to have an outstanding Theological Faculty as they
had in the late sixties and early seventies. The Alumni magazine has paralleled the same decline. Its rather rubbishy right now. I do understand
that this is a biased opinion. However, I would proudly stand for the ND of
my time which was characterized by openness and hope for our catholic future.
Intellectual honesty is a requirement of any professional and lopsided half-truths are hardly the stuff of excellence. The exchange her onthe video was
trite to say the best. The MC was clueless and the good professor did not
in any way enlighten either the MC or the audience. So it goes.
Veni Creaator Spiritus, mentes tuorum visita!
Bless all,

Wonderful explanation of how

Wonderful explanation of how difficult it is to work our way thru this divisive conversation with respect for all authentic, non-vitriolic offerings. If the Bishops are truly listening to moral theologians throughout the world, surely respectful discourse is possible. Cathy Kaveny successfully interprets our shared dilemma of continuing to love an imperfect Pilgrim Church that is moving towards the light. But what slow progress! Our unapologetic love and respect for all life is what helps us stay the course within a framework which is oftentimes maddening. But surely the fruits of the Spirit will prevail!

I'm tired of lowest common

I'm tired of lowest common denominator thinking that focuses on imperfection and moving towards fulfillment. Throwing responsibility off on the eventual intervention of the Holy Spirit is also an abdication of reality. We have a corrupt oligarchy based in the Vatican that legally owns and controls everything. Hope is not a strategy, it is a manipulative tool in their soiled hands.
