Fr. Cutie: Too little, too late

Fr. Albert Cutie, the Miami priest who left the priesthood after the paparazzi caught him with his girlfriend on the beach, is in the news again. Now an Episcopal priest, husband (to said girlfriend) and actual father to a teen-aged stepson and infant daughter, Cutie has released a "tell-all" book this month.

Nothing in "Dilemma: A Priest's Struggle with Faith and Love" will surprise veteran church watchers and reformers:

  • A number of priests are involved in heterosexual and homosexual relationships, in part because celibacy makes them lonely and starved for intimacy.
  • Some bishops are hardly the pastoral shepherds they should be to their flocks, including their priests.
  • Many in the church hierarchy are only concerned with the church's image in the sex abuse scandal.

(Disclaimer: I have not yet read the entire book but am basing this summary and my opinions on news reports here and here.)

Cutie claims he didn't write the book to "settle scores" (it's likely his publisher asked him to) and that he was disillusioned with the church and struggling with some church teaching long before his breaking of his vow of celibacy was exposed.

Yet Cutie had quite the platform even before his scandal. Nicknamed "Father Oprah" because of his successful television ministry, he was likely the most influential Hispanic priest in America. His first book was a bestseller, perhaps in part because it featured on its cover his "Father What-a-Waste" face (as does his new book).

I wish Father Cutie all the happiness in new life. But I wish he had revealed the things he's saying now back when he was part of the Catholic Church. That would have had real impact. Now, it unfortunately sounds like sour grapes.

Whether "Cutie" pie revealed

Whether "Cutie" pie revealed the things he's saying in his book while still part of the Roman Catholic church makes no difference, by now we should have a pretty good idea of the shenanigans and other carried out in the name of Christ.
The beauty of it is He knows too.
Fools.

Heidi, after a spectacular

Heidi, after a spectacular rise in popularity among a primarily Hispanic and young audience and then an equally astonishing public betrayal of his vows, which very probably led to a deep scandal to hundreds, if not thousands of young adults, (primarily, but not exclusively, girls in the 15-24 age bracket)all you have to say , is that you wished he would have written a further scandal producing book sooner? Am I missing something? Do you not understand the damage that these actions have done? This man served as a sorely needed role model, one that people could point to with pride to help them buttress their own positions on faith and moral doctrines, which given the current state of the church, can be a daunting task, especially for the young. Rather than laud his intent but criticize his timing, how about using your talent to limit the scandal, and start to repair the wounds?

Joseph, What I was saying was

Joseph,

What I was saying was that he should have been honest about his thoughts and feelings when he first had them, not waiting until now that he's secure in another job/church/marriage, etc.

If you and others are scandalized by his thoughts, so be it. But that doesn't mean he didn't have them.

Heidi

wounds repair when opened and

wounds repair when opened and cleansed, not covered over and forgotten where they fester and rot and destroy.

Heidi's insightful, eloquent and delightful talent courageously opens our deepest wounds here, for cleansing through our prayerful reflection, and for this we are very grateful.

Honest demanded greater disclosure while at the height of his communicative powers and prestige, not now that he is by all forgotten, and in need of book sales. Now it stinks of publicity stunt as much as the condom phrases in that otherwise ignored Seewald puff piece.

But then while strong he should have spoken out loud in the name of Liberation Theology, declaring as Jesus orders Good News to the Poor.

An end to all war, an end to the blockade of Cuba, as so the Vatican calls on both counts.

I wonder Joseph; would it

I wonder Joseph; would it have been better for him to continue in religious life, forced to be living a lie like so many who do, or now in their twilight years, have done in the past..
Can you imagine how many children have been conceived from the need of intimacy in the full sense. Especially those who have entered religious life through junior seminaries.
In Australia, in the seventies, one "legendary" Archbishop is on record as approaching a Sister of Charity who had received funding to build a private hospital, to extend the maternity ward for "impoverished mothers" whose situation had been created by his and no doubt other priests.
This facility was still being used into the early eighties.
It makes one wonder how many catholic children now adults, really know who their father's are.
It's a wise child who does and equally important, is this the price to pay to preserve the priesthood; and we haven't even touched on sorely needed role models.

but, like, isn't Ratzo's

Would it have made a

Would it have made a difference if he had used his Roman Catholic platforms to make those criticisms? The RC hierarchy would not have paid any attention to him any more than it pays any attention to NCR.

From someone else who has left the RCC for the Episcopal Church.

Did his bishop ever ask him

Did his bishop ever ask him how he was doing?
How he was coping with the limelight? And being a full-time pastor? And doing everything else he was asked to do?
Sure, he could have said "no" but he is human, too. He could have used some pastoral care from his bishop. And if he wouldn't listen, then you trim his duties for him. You get in his face and make him choose.
It is easy for leadership not to inquire of those who "look good" if they are doing ok.
They should care enough to ask everyone, especially their brother priests.

This one is a real cutie!

This one is a real cutie! That's all paulte has to say about him! And as far as his claim about celibacy, like duh, if you don't feel happy to be celibate which is a charism in the first place then don't enter a seminary. People who look for sexual satisfaction to assuage loneliness don't have a charism of celibacy; it's that simple. Ordination must be restricted to happy celibate males in love with God.

" -- if you don't feel happy

" -- if you don't feel happy to be celibate which is a charism in the first place then don't enter a seminary ---"

Ah, yes the average sexually immature 20-something who is attracted to the imagined glamorous role of Father-in-Charge has a fully developed understanding and knowledge of the long-term demans and effects of celibacy.

Not everyone with a vocation to the Catholic priesthood is given the "charism" of celibacy! If that were true, we would not be ordaining married men who "poped" from other denominations - they obviously don't have the charism of celibacy and therefore should not become Catholic priests. And we can write off all of those non-celibate Eastern Rite Catholic priests as not being "real priests," too.

"A system which forces adult men to remain compliant adolescents into their senescence cannot present to the church-at-large a model of leadership to which normally adjusted males will be attracted. When compulsory celibacy is compounded by compulsive compliancy in the clergy, it ends up attracting men who are comfortable with feeling dependent, disabled, and relieved at the possibility of being sexless agents of spiritual reality." (Paul E. Dinter, Disabled for The Kingdom (article), "Commonweal, October 12, 1990.)

"Too long a sacrifice can make a stone of the heart." (W. B. Yeats in his poem "Easter 1916")

Well, I don't think it is as much sower grapes as it further documents the work of Richard Sipe. I think this man can and probably will remain a highly influential person not only in the broader Christian world but in the RCC. Many members in the RCC Hispanic world are still highly influenced by him as well they should. Heidi, careful not to give up on him yet as he may remain highly influential in his ministry.

Ms. Schlumpf: Thank you for

Ms. Schlumpf: Thank you for bringing our attention to this in your blog. To me, all that this book does is to provide a written testimony that Rev. Cutie was/is a hypocrite, unable to keep a promise, that he had lied to many including his (former) fellow priests, his former parishioners as well as those who listened/watched him in the media. I've known and heard of many priests and vowed religious who, like Rev. Cutie, struggled with their vocation and love (but never their faith). Some chose to leave the religious life/priesthood; others stayed. But none of them lived a double life or lied the way Rev. Cutie did. And certainly, none of them were egotistical enough to write a book about it. Rev Cutie: Spare us; and do your new congregation and new family a favor: try to keep your promise to them and have some self respect.

I disagree. I would have no right to say it "IS" sour grapes. But I can say it "SOUNDS LIKE" sour grapes.

It IS not only sour grapes

It IS not only sour grapes but also a desperate attempt to earn some money now he's married and has a family to support out here in the real world, and nothing moves books in America like telling the truth about the Roman Catholic Church.

Exactly. You wish he was a dissident Catholic back when he was a Catholic, like all y'all are. Now he's just another Protestant.

Oh, and it IS just sour grapes. If he hadn't been "caught" betraying his lifelong vows, he might still be a priest.

Newsflash - priests and the bishops in the (evil) hierarchy are all sinners! Now THERE'S a scoop. That should sell books, "Father."

Finally, I wonder sometimes what the difference between a dissident and a protestant is. Not much I guess.

You ought to know . . .

To me it only sounds LIKE sour grapes . . .

Mr Cutie has to tell the

Mr Cutie has to tell the story about his very own "friends"...Just like JUDAS... Mr CUTIE you are saying nothing new to the public...The whole world know about people like you...but do not be mistaken NOT ALL PRIEST ARE AS WEAK AS YOU ARE...there are many more priest who truly live up to the DIGNITY OF THE PRIESTHOOD. Do not try to play victim here...You are but an opportunist without real values.

Not so fast Joana, Check the

Not so fast Joana, Check the celibacy statistics presented by Richard Sipe. Perhaps this man is just growing into his humanity that will stimulate his very personal spirituality. So many priests that claim to be celibate simply are not. So many who condemn our youth for simple masturbation, masturbate themselves. So many have human affairs with others! Celibacy is such a horrible deprivation that it should never be demanded of anybody. Perhaps, there are some that can remain celibate, but depravation is not a key to a life of creativity and loving ministry.

Father Cutie is not a good

Father Cutie is not a good poster boy for advocates of married priests.

For one, as already noted, his "awakening" came rather conveniently after his violation of his vows came to light. If he came to believe he had a right to marry, why didn't he leave the priesthood long ago? Even if he believed celibacy was wrong, nevertheless his seeing his girlfriend on the sly was still completely wrong.

Second, it is one thing to argue in favor of allowing married men to be ordained as priests; that has been done in the past and the Church could allow that in the future. There are arguments to be made both pro and con (although I find many who argue in favor are glib about it and give almost no credence to the arguments against).

But...but...there never was, anywhere in the whole history of the Church, east or west, any allowance for a priest marrying after ordination. Now, if you want to argue for that, go ahead--but now you are arguing for something fundamentally different, and wholly unprecedented.

Ms. Schlumpf wrote, “Now, it unfortunately sounds like sour grapes.”

I always rankle with the idea that any female would have such a perspective. I guess it’s a testimony to the power that the patriarchal Vatican holds even over females. Isn’t “Better Late than Never,” referring to the timing of Cutie’s disclosures, a more compassionate observation? For when one’s mind hasn’t settled on what the final choice is going to be – it’s almost impossible to verbalize the thoughts one is having. In fact, when the final choice hasn’t been made or even settled "in," it is a wise person who doesn’t announce their thoughts.

so, TFS-plh, does it not

so, TFS-plh, does it not rankle when I say it?

Here. Try this:
Now, it unfortunately sounds like sour grapes.

Ok. So, like, TFS, dude, why doesn't that rankle as well, when I write it, a non-female?

Just wondering . . .

To me of course it sounds just like a guy with a previously divorced wife who might not find him all that exciting anymore as when it was on the sly with a priest, and with a sullen stepson with all of the complexities that involves, and with a baby of their own, with a future to provide for in this economy, a ponzi house of cards in freefall, desperate now to regain the lucrative media spotlight by a bundle of book sales, just to pay the rent, if possible . . .

as a Catholic priest he could have led us out of this immoral desert by speaking up courageously then, giving hope and life to the poor and to the forgotten. As a Catholic priest to have spoken out thusly would have brought truth to the conversation within our Catholic community, and prophetic courage. “Now, it unfortunately sounds like sour grapes.”

He made a comment to the

He made a comment to the effect He was still "Catholic" but not "Roman" , and
the Episcopalians had the 7 sacrements & he still venertated Mary.
Guess He's not aware of the 20 or 39 aricles of the Anglican's , one of which refutes Transubsstantiiom of the Eucharesst. In it's original form it's real piece of anti "Popish" Prose. I don't believe any Anglican Province has repudiated it, but the "AngloCatholic" elements pay no heed to it.
I doubt He believed in the doctrine of the Church, or He would have just left the priesthood and not switched

This isn't new stuff. What

This isn't new stuff. What is he thinking? Andrew Greeley wrote about this stuff long ago.

May God have mercy on all of

May God have mercy on all of us. Cutie could have left the Holy Priesthood if he thought it was not his call serve the Good Lord in the celibate-chaste life. After all, he knew the challenges before he opted for Christ's priesthood. By the way, we wish him well in his new found faith. LONG LIVE THE HOLY ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIESTHOOD! LONG LIVE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH!

In Ireland there are a number

In Ireland there are a number of Church of Ireland (Anglican/Episcopalian) priests who formerly were Catholic priests.
As far as the 39 Articles are concerned, they are considered 'historical documents' rather than current dogma. Attempts to repeal or modify them would unnecessarily open old wounds and controversies within the Anglican Church. Our church also has a number of historical documents that have been subject to modifications over the years, e.g., with regard to salvation outside the Church and with regard to our Jewish brothers and sisters. As for Transubstantiation, I would refer readers to the ARCIC agreed statement on the nature of the Eucharist.

I don't think Father Cutie wrote his book primarily for financial gain but rather to explain his decisions and to call attention to problems within the Church.

With the possible exceptions of Mel Gibson and a few of the more conservative clergy and members of the Hierarchy, most of us are 'cafeteria Catholics' if we truly examine our beliefs and practices. To deny this is in fact a form of denial in the psychological meaning of the word.
