Jan Brewer, Arizona's governor, has signed a law that will allow cops to pull over, question, and detain anyone they have a “reasonable suspicion” to believe is in this country without proper documents. This is racial profiling--a threat to all of our civil rights. Latinos will be targeted as never before. The legislation potentially threatens church ministries, theoretically forcing those in ministry to ask for proof of residency before offering to take a group of people to church, to cite but one example. Groups around the country are calling for a national boycott of Arizona businesses, urging actions such as canceling conferences scheduled to be held in the state. To sign on to the boycott, check out the Latino advocacy group, Presente.org.
The issue is how do we
The issue is how do we protect our borders to maintain legitimate control over our country. The Arizona law is based upon the federal law, using the exact same language. Stopping someone just to check legal status is NOT in the bill. In fact, it specifically forbids it.
How about protesting those countries where these immigrants are originally from? Their home country's policies are forcing their own people out through thuggery, drug lords, and ignoring true human rights.
If the root causes are eliminated, wouldn't that be true justice?...That is where your protest ought to be directed.

As the mother of a police
As the mother of a police officer -- not in Arizona -- the police are caught in a Catch 22. If they follow their consciences and do not ask for papers, they are breaking the law, and if they do ask for papers and the person is not an illegal, the officer, or department, is liable to be sued for a civil rights violation. No one with this law comes out a winner.
I understand that there is a move within Arizona to have t-shirts printed with, "How do you know I am legal?", or "How do you know I am not illegal?"

One secret in my family of
One secret in my family of course is that my paternal grandmother came to this country illegally, borrowing the papers of her sister when she, my paternal grandmother, had to flee suddenly due to the centuries of British military occupation and oppression of Ireland.
Several other Irishmen of the family also arrived under dubious conditions.
We´re still here of course
And now we see sons and grandsons of Irishmen supporting borders closed to fellow Catholics?

I was reading in the local
I was reading in the local newspaper here in Mexico today of eight Guatemalens discovered this week by the Mexican police on an interstate bus here in Chihuahua state in the city of Nuevo Casas Grandes, nearby here, on their way to Tijuana, and jailed to be sent back to Guatemala.
That´s one way Mexico treats its illegal aliens. I have no interest in what Malkin claims for her readers.

I am already boycotting AZ. To those of you that support the AZ law, go ahead and buy from these hateful people. Even if we don't win this battle, I can assure you we will win the war. The Latino population is relatively young in this country. 4-5 years from now, children of immigrants will be old enough to vote. I can guarantee you, they will remember how their parents were treated and how they were hated for the color of their skin. I can assure you, they will vote accordingly. The GOP and its hate filled rhetoric has managed to alienate just about everyone in this country, even my boyfriend, who is as white as can be. I hope our babies can grow up in a country that does not tolerate hatred of any kind.
