Battle Lines Being Drawn: Archbishop Chaput on Catholic Support for Health Bill
by Joe Feuerherd on Mar. 19, 2010
Writes Archbishop Charles Chaput on the First Things website today: "If the defective Senate version of health-care reform pushed by congressional leaders passes into law—against the will of the American people and burdened by serious moral problems in its content—we’ll have 'Catholic' voices partly to thank for it. And to hold responsible" [emphasis added].

Please, make this
Please, make this Catholic-hating Republican just go away . . .
This alleged Cappuccino so arrogant as to condemn President Kennedy . . .
"For arrogance and hatred are the wares. Peddled in the thoroughfares."
Not in the Roman Catholic Church.
Maybe upon that Lutheran's website.
But please, not within the one, holy, universal Catholic Church.
our collegial family.
not when millions of poor people of God have no health care, and no hope.
Didn't that mission of Saint Francis include bringing hope where there is no hope?
Did not the commissioning by Jesus Christ include heal the sick?

Mon cherie frere Charles, I
Mon cherie frere Charles,
I am neither Democrat nor Republican and do not care about politics but one thing is for sure, you need to read the Cathechism, my friend, and then issue you opinion.
It is embarrasing for a lay person like me to see a religious man like you been critical of a bishop. Specially when what the church has taught for centuries is so clear.
The issue is not to cover with health care "the poor" or uncovered but HOW this administration is doing it AGAINST the will of the American people and good economic practices.
Has MY will, for one, as it
Has MY will, for one, as it follows Gospel precepts.
Those "good economic practices" have enriched Wall Street and the medical industry and denied our people health care
Watch the moral theology treatise Sicko by Michael Moore and pray with me
get your nose out of that catechsim and read the Gospel, my brother

MD, if you want to go by
MD, if you want to go by polls, the polls favor the bill. As to your understanding of good economic practices, while Frere Charles is reading the catechism to discover these, you should take some economics--or read the economists. The health care problems in this country had to be addressed to get the deficit EVER back under control after StarWars of the Reagan years, tax refunds (why?), and 7-year wars costing a billion dollars a day, and no one accountable for the lies that got us there..
Spoken like a "real"
Spoken like a "real" Republican.
How right he is. Advocates
How right he is. Advocates for abortion on demand are so happy that some wacky fringe "Catholic" groups are selling their souls on this one.
'The recent experience in
'The recent experience in Massachusetts suggests that universal health care coverage has been associated with a decrease in the number of abortions performed' [from above post]
A/B Chaput ignores that Massachucetts with 98% health care decreases abortions because women choose life when they have support. . The A/B, not being a family man, let me help him out with mathematics of daily life... An abortion costs $300-400 dollars. A no insurance birthing costs $ 3000.oo -10,000.oo, with no complictions. Which would a hard pressed single woman choose if she was uninsured? another fact.. Only 13% of insured women use their insurance for abortion because of tracking and privacy reasons. I say if Chaput has his way and the bill fails this weekend he should be held responsible for the abortions of woman who are encouraged to choose the $300 solution because he says they should not have health insurance so they can choose a live birth. His reasons/analysis is mainly 'I don't trust the government''It's a government trick' [just like the Tea Party- know-nothings ]
Thank you Archbishop Chaput
Thank you Archbishop Chaput for having the internal fortitude and backbone to speak the Truth to power.
Kill Obamacare, it is an "Obamination". This is the most corrupt regime that this country has ever had. The use of illegal Chicago style politics to avoid a proper vote on the bill is truly the most despicable.
The majority of people adamantly oppose this bill and only 37% support it.
Vote out everyone who votes for this and impeach those not up for election this year!!!!
I think its wonderful that
I think its wonderful that the Archbishop can live in a beautiful home, with servants, lovely meals to eat, fine suits and the peace of mind of having health care, and no burdens of average man such as taxes, and how to manage all the bills and educate children, and provide them with health care. Perhaps he was educated in good Catholic Schools, away from the poor and underserved that would put a face on this suffering for him to remember. Jesus must be so proud of all of our Church leaders who dont know hardship, and struggle, and can still not be a voice for the voiceless who dont have money. Regardless of what happens the good Archbishop will be well provided for.
"It's not because their
"It's not because their worldview has gotten stale that those women who choose abortion choose abortion. It might be invigorating to those who have become tired of the seemingly unending debate on the subject to look at it from a different philosophical perspective, but it does absolutely nothing to address the issues that drive the actual choice.
People who are pro-choice usually believe that given the choice, they would choose life, whereas people who are pro-life believe that no one should be allowed a choice. The impasse has very little to do with anyone's understanding of the cosmic significance of birth and death. It has to do with what people define as personal boundaries for themselves and others.
My feeling is that each individual is responsible for behaving in a God-pleasing way with regard to their sexuality. I do not believe it is up to me or my government to force people to behave in God-pleasing ways.
However, it is my obligation to God to be an example of God-pleasing behavior even if I would prefer that it go unnoticed. Therefore, I accept that I might become the object of people's ridicule or criticism."
