You know a lot about someone if you know what breaks their heart. In all the instant commentary on Pope Francis' remarks about gay priests, one thing has been lost. The pope did not, of course, say that homosexual acts are not sinful. What he did say is that if a priest has a same-sex attraction, and has wrestled with it, and perhaps even fallen down a couple of times, this does not lead him to cast judgment. On the other hand, when the Holy Father spoke to seminarians in Rome a few weeks ago, he said that when he sees a priest driving a new model car, it breaks his heart. 'Nuf said.
