Must Read on Philly

I know, I know: Who wants to read something that is sure to depress them? But, read it we must. Philadelphia Magazine has a long story about the sex abuse scandal that continues to rock that city.

The most damning quote:

"When you spend that much time in the Vatican,” a St. Louis priest said of Rigali a decade ago, “you’re like one of the Bernini columns, just one of many holding up the place. You don’t want to draw attention to yourself.” Rigali is gentle and caring, quick to show up at the bedside of an ailing priest. But he is not dynamic. “Justin Rigali wouldn’t have enough inner authority to say in a homily, ‘Love your neighbor,’” said the priest. “He would say, ‘As the Pope said when he was in Toronto: Love your neighbor.’”

And, as rumors continue that Cardinal Rigali will soon be replaced, we can only hope and pray that Rome understands Philadelphia needs a bishop who will be a balm-speader for that troubled archdiocese, not a bomb-thrower.

Regarding: "And, as rumors

Regarding: "And, as rumors continue that Cardinal Rigali will soon be replaced, we can only hope and pray that Rome understands Philadelphia needs a bishop who will be a balm-speader for that troubled archdiocese, not a bomb-thrower."

- Even if Archbishop Benedict xvi is slow to send a replacement, Rigali can cease acting as bishop of the archdiocese of Philadelphia. He should turn the archdiocese over to the archdiocese's consultors, and start a pilgrimage of parish churches and oratories in the archdiocese where at each place of prayer and worship he will, on his knees, scrub the floors and sidewalks.

Regarding: "Rigali is gentle and caring, quick to show up at the bedside of an ailing priest. But he is not dynamic. "

- When one considers all the gentle, caring, loving men, like Bernard Law, who as bishops have failed the local churchs that they were sent to serve by the Archbishop of Rome, one has to ask: "What is missing, that all that care and love and goodness does not allow them to see and feel the harm that has been done to children and young people? What is hidden in them that they would increase the harm by deceit, dishonesty, and even lies?"

Many years ago, John F.

Many years ago, John F. Kennedy said, "No one throws in a hand with four aces." Will it ever be possible for the Catholic clerical caste to throw in their hand, which has five aces?

This woman said it

This woman said it best:

“Catholics are made to suffer more from the church than for it.” Flannery O’Connor

Harsh authorities bleed credibility. For all of his alleged "gentle and caring" persona, Rigali and bishops of the same ilk act harshly in what they do and don't do. So many have become an intolerable burden on the Body of Christ and need to be dismissed out of hand, either by removal from their positions, or by their constituents through simple lack of attention to their comments and obedience to their commands.

Very informative article

Very informative article about the two Cardinals in Philly. I read the article in the Sunday magazine and it presented a very damaging picture of what was happening in Philadelphia and probably many other cities throughout the country. I believe that we can only hope that the DA and the courts in Philly have the courage to take on the hierarchy and convict the guilty priest and the Cardinals and Bishops who participated in this obstruction of justice. The Bishops meeting in Seattle recently does not give a positive feeling that change within the Church is really going to happen. I believe that the leadership think that they will outlast this scandal. I pray that the Holy spirit will help the victims of this abuse, the laity, and priest within the Church to demand reform of the current ruling structure of our Church. Thanks for printing this article Mr. Winters.

Archbishop Rigali's departure

Archbishop Rigali's departure is long over due. It is also hoped, just as Pope Benedict lands in his native land this September for his forthcoming state visit, Chancellor Angela Merkel will also have Germany's state prosecutor on hand ready to place the pope under immediate house arrest for crimes against humanity . The pontiff remains a citizen of Germany to this day and is subject to the civil and criminal laws of Germany as any other citizen is.
