Gibbons Cried
It is said that when, in 1911, James Cardinal Gibbons learned that Archbishop William Henry O'Connell was named a cardinal, Gibbons cried. O'Connell was refered to at the time, by a woman who worked at the Vatican, Ella Edes, as "Monsignor Pomposity." He was most known for his efforts to have the U.S. Bishops Conference disbanded and his opposition to laws against child labor.
Today, Archbishop Raymond Burke of the Apostolic Signatura, was named a cardinal. In heaven, I am sure that Gibbons is weeping anew.
Burke is the most controversial prelate in recent American history. He told Sen. John Kerry he would be refused communion in St. Louis. He attacked Archbishop Donald Wuerl, also named a cardinal this morning, in an interview with Randall Terry and, then, was forced to apologize for it. He suggested that Cardinal Sean O'Malley was acting at the behest of the "Father of Lies" for allowing a Catholic funeral for Sen. Ted Kennedy and presiding at it.
Burke was kicked upstairs in 2008. The Latin phrase for "kickedup stairs" is "promoveatur ut amoveatur" - let him be promoted so that he can be removed. There were many competent canonists who could take the post of head of the Apostolic Signatura, and all agree that Burke is a competent canonist. Still, there should be a better way to remove prelates than to promote them. I know that this awarding of the cardinal's hat in no way reflects an endorsement of Burke's views, but many of his fans will interpret it that way and I do not think it a good thing to encourage them.
Well, despite Gibbons' tears, the Church survived the cardinalate of William Henry O'Connell and it will survive the cardinalate of Raymond Burke. But, it is a thing to be regretted.

Um. Hindsight should be
Um. Hindsight should be 20/20. It's time to drop the "promoveatur ut amoveatur" canard.
None of the Burke's "fans" believed that Burke was "kicked upstairs" when was originally moved to Rome. We feel confirmed in that belief this morning. We find it simply insulting that persons like yourself persist in looking past the obvious: that Pope Benedict is giving a full endorsement to Raymond Burke, whatever his rough edges might be.
It's noteworthy that you
It's noteworthy that you posted this item before commenting about Abp. Wuerl's red hat.
Came here for the wailing and
Came here for the wailing and gnashing of teeth, leaving satisfied.
Here's to Cardinal Burke! Don't worry, Mike. I'll call a WHAAAAAmbulance for you.
Archbishop Raymond is now
Archbishop Raymond is now surrounded by others of equal or greater caliber and answerable in a very direct and clear way to the Archbishop of Rome. Nothing that he says or does as a member of the Curia can occur without scrutiny and improvement by others who possess a more spiritual and pastoral sense of the Body of Christ.
Let us pray that these others, including the Archbishop of Rome, do their job well.
Silliness, you have no idea
Silliness, you have no idea what you're talking about.
Seriously? Archbishop Burke
Seriously? Archbishop Burke is following Church teachings. As we all should be. I mean this sincerely, we should all celebrate when new Cardinals are chosen. God has given us so much, in this One True Church. Whether you dislike him from a political point of view, or don't care for his taste in shoes, remember what is most important: the Church continues to give Our Lord's message of Love for all of us. THAT is the important part here, not kerfluffling over someone you don't care for, becoming a Cardinal. We should all, every Catholic, everywhere, revel in this Divine Gift.
Thank you for speaking for so
Thank you for speaking for so many of us. Burke is a worthy successor to O'Connell (who also opposed women's suffrage) and America's other great reactionary cardinal, James McIntyre of Los Angeles, best remembered for standing alone among California bishops in declining to oppose a 1964 initiative that banned any laws forbidding housing discrimination.
But at the parish level, the Burkes of the heirarchy create an oppressive atmosphere, where charity is forgotten. Consider these incidents in 2004, in Raymond Burke’s former diocese in Wisconsin.
An eighth-grader at a Catholic school in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., was told by a school secretary on election day, “So you’re a baby-killer, eh?” A math teacher said that “as Catholics, you’re supposed to vote for Michels,” the candidate challenging Sen. Russ Feingold.
(The student’s father was a Democratic activist, and his aunt was a Democratic state legislator.)
In Thorp, Wis., a parishioner had written a letter to the community weekly stating that voters should consider an array of moral issues.
At Masses some days later, a local pro-life newsletter was handed out inside the church, including a letter rebuking the parishioner.
Finally in 2000, worshippers at at least one church in Junction City, Wis., were told on the Sunday after the election that "you who voted for Al Gore will have to answer to God."
Sadly, we seem to have a proliferating number of James Dobson wannabes serving as bishops, every month there's a new horror story from somewhere. Burke seems to merely be the most frenzied of their number.

The issue is life, the first
The issue is life, the first God-given right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration didn't make life a right, it just affirms what already is fact. We have a political system that is anti-life. Raymond Burke has a spine when speaking about fundamental Catholic beliefs. It is sad so many other American prelates are schismatic. Please answer the basic question: How can one support the willful and deliberate destruction of human life - in any of its stages - and remain a faithful Catholic?
Your stories are anecdotal - is that the best you can do?
One either is or is not a Catholic. Conscience is God's territory. If someone supports abortion in conscience they should have the courage of their convistions and leave the Church.
Archbishop Burke is a fine
Archbishop Burke is a fine canonist. Also a very kind and gentle man. The fact that the whiners at NCR are weeping tells me that the Pope chose correctly. I bet you still wish that Weakland was getting a red hat. Your day is done. The signs of the times point in a different direction. We will survive the NCR.
No reference to the "cappa
No reference to the "cappa magna" yet? Are the Catholycs loosing their touch or are they all still crying in solidarity with Cardinal Gibbons?
