Cardinal Timothy Dolan has penned a defense of his decision to serve as Grand Marshal of next year's St. Patrick's Day Parade. I would point out to his critics that nowhere, not once, does +Dolan suggest he disagrees with the Church's teaching in any regard. That is not the point. What is the point, as +Dolan notes, is this: "So, while actions are immoral, identity is not! In fact, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, people with same-sex attraction are God’s children, deserving dignity and respect, never to be treated with discrimination or injustice." Only a culture warrior would fail to see this and +Dolan seems not to be listening to the culture warriors these days and showing himself, instead, to be a churchman. Somewhere in heaven, Msgr. John Tracy Ellis is smiling.
