Bill Donohue: NIMBY on Bigotry

I almost feel sorry for Bill Donohue. Is he really this clueless?

Donohue has rightly been attacking Pastor Robert Jeffress for his outrageous remarks about the Catholic Church. He warned that Governor Rick Perry's campaign would be in a heap of trouble if he did not disassociate himself from Jeffress's anti-Catholic comments. Now, Donohue reports in a press release that Gov. Perry gave him a call and said he did not agree with Pastor Jeffress that the Catholic Church has been infected by Satan. Donohue concludes his press release with the words: "Case closed."

No it isn't. Pastor Jeffress is on the nation's radar screen because of his outrageous remarks about Mitt Romney's religion being a barrier to his candidacy. We then subsequently learned that Pastor Jeffress is an equal opportunity bigot, that his venom extends not just to Mormons but to Catholics. Donohue is evidently content to let Jeffress - and Perry - off the hook so long as their bigotry is directed at Mormons. But, the problem with bigotry has nothing to do with who it is aimed at. The problem is that it is aimed at anybody. Donohue's failure to see this is sufficient for his Board to call for him to enjoy a timely retirement.

Perry wants to have it both

Perry wants to have it both ways: on the one hand, his friend Jeffress trashes Mormons and Catholics and thus Evangelicals are told to vote for Perry, on the other hand, Perry quietly assures Mormons and Catholics that he does not agree with Jeffress and tries to get their votes too. Perry and Bill Donohue should not let Jeffress off the hook. Jeffress should be repudiated by both men and if that offends some Evangelicals, too bad.
Robert Hagee has also engaged in some anti Catholic bigotry, and subsequently been let off the hook.

The Evangelicals have become very powerful in the Republican party and GOP candidates for President are anxious to please them. However, when Evangelical leaders attack other religions, they should not get a pass, for fear of offending Evangelicals. If the GOP becomes a party of Evangelical theology, rather than of values, then pehaps Catholics, Mormons, etc should consider leaving?

It seems that so many feel

It seems that so many feel that unless you are christian, you cannot be president of our country? Since when?

DONOHUE RETIRE? HA, HA

DONOHUE RETIRE? HA, HA ...........Sean, Donohue does, it appears, what his funders, encouraged by NY's Dolan et al. and the US bishops' right-wing funders, want him to do. The main immediate objective is to get a "no-new taxes-on-the-rich" Republican candidate elected. That could still be Perry. Donahue only gave him a warning shot about associating too closely with Catholic bashers, but Donohue and his supporters, e.g., Dolan, may still need to help elect Perry. At $400+ thousand dollars in annual compensation mainly for turning out his occasional diatribes, Bill is not retiring any time soon. He has a sweet deal and he knows it. It's the ECONOMY, stupid!

It's the ECONOMY, stupid!

I doubt the real issue behind

I doubt the real issue behind this article is Pastor Jefferies, bigotry, Mormonism, or Catholicism.

Instead, it is simply a chance to take a cheap shot at a rival. Has the recess bell rung yet?

Well said. I know old "Wild

Well said. I know old "Wild Bill" has a great job and is well compensated. However, I don't know who he represents. It's certainly not me nor any Catholics that I know of. I wish he would quit stirring the pot, adding heat but no light, and just go quietly away.

I'm not so sure the Catholic

I'm not so sure the Catholic Church HASN'T been infected by Satan. Donohue just doesn't want us to know about it.

Over the years, I've heard

Over the years, I've heard and read many of Bill Donohue's comments. Most of them have been strident and somewhat self-righteous. He is a staunch warrior of the Church Militant, emphasizing that he is Catholic, rarely mentioning that we began as followers of the Way of Jesus Christ. We started out as Christian. As we took the Good News to all people, we became universal or catholic.

As the voice and president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, Bill Donohue has assumed the role of arbiter of political correctness and defender of Catholicism. While he may have the ear and support of many of our Catholic sisters and brothers, his public voice and example have done little to promote the message of inclusivity, tolerance, forgiveness, justice, peace and love, the substance of the New and Everlasting Covenant. Instead, he has favored the way of judgement and condemnation. These rights are divine. As humans, we can only share in these rights from the Cross, and never with the words and actions of disunity.

I pray that with Bill Donohue, we may all work together to achieve the prayer Jesus taught us: Thy will (not mine) be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Paz y Bien, Rolando, SFO.

Jeffress is also virulently

Jeffress is also virulently anti gay.

According to DallasVoice.Com: 'Jeffress, of course, has a long history of anti-gay activism. When he was pastor at First Baptist Church in Wichita Falls in 1998, he tried to eliminate gay-themed books from the city’s public library. And after joining First Baptist in Dallas in 2008, he sparked protests with a controversial sermon advertised on the church’s marquee, 'Why Gay is Not O.K.'...He also said he thinks gays should be barred from serving openly in the military because '70 percent of the gay population has AIDS.' 'It’s a fact that it’s a gay disease so there’s a reasonable reason to exclude gays from the military,' he said."
Those are just a few of his views.

Jeffress was one of the speakers featured at the recent Values Voters Summit in DC, sponsored by the Family Research Council and the American Family Association, two groups labelled hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center due to the lies they perpetrate about LGBT people.

Unfortunately, though not surprisingly, a representative of the US Catholic bishops, Daniel Avila, spoke at this conference as well. He said there is a plan to overturn marriage equality in Massachusetts (read - dissolve legal same sex marriages) through a vote of the citizens of the state. Of course, Bill Donohue would agree with the bishops' plans.
And I might add that The Catholic League has a long history of antigay activity as well.

Bigotry is not just directed at Mormons or Catholics. It is directed at Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people as well. And it is just as ugly whether it is being mouthed by Baptists, or Catholics, or anyone else. Religion and religious doctrines have long been use to justify bigotry and persecution of "the other," whoever the other may be.

Unfortunately, I suspect that

Unfortunately, I suspect that his Board is as clueless as he is.

Whatever else he may be

Whatever else he may be guilty of, Jeffress
accurately characterized Mormons of not
being Trinitarian Christians. This is "bigotry",
M.S.Winters? Possibly time for YOUR timely
retirement, M.S.Winters.

Case closed? his $400,000+

Case closed? his $400,000+ salary lets him think he owns something..
He does.... a money making scam.. called league.. who is he in league with?

What obligation does the head

What obligation does the head of the Catholic League have with regard to Mormons? As an individual and a Christian, I am sure he detests any bigotry. As a professional, his interest in pastor Jeffress was a "case closed" once Perry disavowed the nutjob.

I suspect Bill shares the

I suspect Bill shares the bigotry aganist Mormon's. I still find it funny that a pastor that denies the Real Pressence of Christ in the Eucharist is attacking anyone else's orthodoxy. I suspect Bill wants to paper over differences, since Trads, Mormons and Southern Baptists generally share most points of economic and social conservatisim and would rather start damning those of us who don't instead of each other.

Is NCR this clueless? It's

Is NCR this clueless? It's "The Catholic League" fighting anti-Catholic bias, not the Mormon League fighting anti-Mormon bias.

I and very likely we liberals

I and very likely we liberals are not very likely to have trouble with Mormons. We are congruent with, as Christ commanded, these the least of my brethren. We libs/progs are not so full of ourselves that we damn others who are different or worship differently. We leave that nastiness to the pope, the hierarchs and the right wing fundie JPII-GOP-Reagan-Friedman-Ayn Rand Republicans.

That form of Republicanism is a mental aberration possibly even a mental/character disorder. George W. Bush is very emblematic of that aberration, actually he is very likely a Sociopath as he used to torture and kill animals as a child. That is very diagnostically significant. One can make a case for that being the problem with most men in the Bush family. That certainly applies to G.H.W. Bush, G.W. Bush, all of his brothers and already many of their male offspring. The specifics are well known, so I'll not enumerate.

I think Sen. Harry Reid, the Udall family, the Osmonds and George Romney are/were okay, even fine people. One of my childhood friends married a Mormon(LDS) woman and she added much to his life.Whether Mitt Romney gets elected or not depends on the pope and other extreme fundie jihadist religious people.

Catholics such as Donohue, Monaghan, the pope, the hierarchs, Mel Gibson and his friend Jim Caviezel, Buchanan, Noonan, Scalia, Thomas, Santorum, Schlafly, et.al are the very Catholics who are so aggressive, vicious and offensive that they MAKE the church the hated institution that it is. They are bereft of Christian(Christ-like) love and humility. They, above all, should never ask the question: why do they hate us? THEY ARE the reason why the church is hated. They will NEVER win hearts and minds!!! All they ever accomplish is to create enemies, their own enemies. Their hate viciousness towards everyone else makes them self defeating.

To say they are a sad bunch is a huge understatement. But Right Wingers are people who think through their lower irrational brain centers, so making enemies is endemic. Sad to say. They do the human race no good. They are destroyers, not builders. They are not reconcilers, to say the least!!! When the world or any part of it(America, the ME, etc) are destroyed they will be the do-ers, guilty party. We have no ability to stop them. We believed what our Faith taught us. Now we are so weakened by our beliefs that we cannot even defend ourselves. Truly, it seems that evil wins the day in this world and in this life. Truly, everything IS upside down and twisted around backwards.

Is it the End of Times yet?

Is it not possible that

Is it not possible that Donohue said "Case closed", without meaning or intending to mean that anti-Mormon bigotry was OK ?

Saying the CC has been infected by Satan is not far from saying that "the smoke of Satan has entered the Church..." - as Paul VI said in 1972. This is surely a long way, and very different, from saying Catholicism is devil-worship (which has also been said).

Is it bigotry to point to the many features of Mormonism, or of Catholicism, for that matter, that make accepting either as Christian a bit challenging ? We have a far from unblemished history, and Mormonism has serious historical & theological problems to contend with.

Is there even such a thing as bigotry ? Being called bad names goes with living in nations that value free speech & freedom of thought; so if Catholics want to be free, and Protestants want to be free, & Mormons want to be free, to be described in an unflattering way, and being misunderstood, are surely consequences of such freedoms, unpleasant as these experiences may be. If someone wants to call Catholics Satanists, the way to answer him is by living a Christ-like life.

Cheap shot! Donahue is head

Cheap shot! Donahue is head of the CATHOLIC defamation league. If he has a morman equivalent, that person would be concerned with Morman defamation. Are you stating that Donahue thinks that attacking the Morman church is just?

If you took the time to read

If you took the time to read a previous blog of Donohue, you would see that he writes about the Morman church and decries the fact the Democrats do not want a Morman in the White House. We need Bill Donohue because so called Catholic blogs trash the Church instead of defending it.
