Former Catholic Rural Life director Holy Cross Br. David Andrews dies

A funeral Mass was scheduled for Jan. 10 in Valatie for Holy Cross Br. David Andrews, who died Monday.

Andrews, who served for 12 years as executive director of Catholic Rural Life, was 70. He had retired from active ministry in 2014 to attend to health issues. He was receiving kidney dialysis at the time of his death.

Pope: Europe 'always been in the vanguard' of ecological efforts

In an address Tuesday before the European Parliament, Pope Francis spent a portion of his remarks addressing ecology, reminding the leaders of the continent's historical prominence in environmental protection and preservation. 

The speech focused on the theme of human dignity and human rights, and through that framework Francis addressed various issues, including the environment.

Not just nuisances: life lessons from deer and geese

The deer showed up three times last week. Being half Irish, and therefore always primed for “signs” -- mystical or otherwise -- I suspected they had something important to say, especially so close to Earth Day.

As it turned out, they did.

In one of their appearances, the deer came as bearers of grief, arriving April 19 through a Columbus Dispatch obituary.
