Update: The $1,000 matching grant was met at 10:57 a.m. central time.
If this were a baseball game and not a Webathon, we'd be in the seventh inning. We'd just be sitting down after singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." The score is close and most of the game is behind us, but the pitching is good, our batters are hot and victory is in sight. We can do this.
We can make our $100,000 goal for the week, if you will please donate now .
If you act this morning, your gift will be doubled. We have an anonymous donor who has put up a $1,000 challenge grant. The donor will match the next $1,000 that comes to the Webathon.
Now is no time to slack off. If you've given already, please spread the word through your networks and contacts: NCR needs your support. If you still haven't given, please do so.
NCR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your gift is tax-deductible as allowed by law.
One thing you may not know is that you can designate your gift in support of a particular program or give a gift on behalf of/in memory of a remarkable person or honor a special occasion.
Let me tell you about two reader messages I received in the last day. This one was posted to one of my Webathon updates and comes from Craig B. McKee of Hong Kong. Many of you will recognize this name: Craig is one of our more active commenters. He wrote:
I do hope that all the regular COMMENTATORS and Monday morning quarterbacks (such as myself...) are putting their MONEY where their KEYBOARD is and ponying up some cash ...
Thanks for the endorsement, Craig. I have mentioned several times this week that the kind of reporting NCR provides does not come cheap. Few things of quality are free. Someone has to foot the bill. This is your chance to help pay the price.
Yet we know not everyone is of equal means. In fact, only in rare occasions has NCR's Web presence been locked behind a pay wall. Much of the reason for that is we want to be accessible to people of even meager means. We know many people in our readership live near or below the poverty line. Some do this by choice; others do not have the choice.
I received an email from a person who -- as much as he would like to -- cannot afford a monetary donation to NCR at this time. He is a priest in mission territory serving among the very poor. He said he can't send money, but he said he will celebrate 15 Masses for the intention of NCR in the month of May.
We never turn down prayers. Thank you, Father.
You can keep track of our (monetary) progress at Webathon Central webpage, where you will also find some fun features:
"NCR is..." A word cloud made up of words we heard from readers about how they describe NCR.
Love notes to NCR. Read love notes to NCR from around the world and submit one of your own.
NCR video messages. We will have a series of video appeals throughout the week. I am sure some you will want to watch more than once and share with friends. Rewatch your favorites and catch ones you have missed. (Be sure to check back as more are posted through the week!)
Last year, your generosity allowed us to meet our $100,000 goal. I hope you can help us repeat that success and meet this goal. Please, donate now .
Our theme this year is "Alive with the spirit."
