Irish diocese ordains deacons, first in 1,500 years

The diocese of Sligo, on the northwest coast of Ireland, ordained six men to the permanent diaconate this weekend. The oldest is a 57-year-old teacher, and another, 41, is originally from Brazil and is a baker. All are married with children.

According to this Irish Times piece, The last recorded reference to a deacon in diocesan records was when one baptized St Ciaran in the parish of Fuerty, County Roscommon, in the sixth century.
