Good reading on the contraception issue

Heidi Schlumpf  |  Feb. 10, 2012 NCR Today

My colleague Jamie Manson cites a piece from "PBS Newshour [1]" in her blog post today alerting NCR readers that the "Bishops' expansion of conscience exemptions is broader than we think [2]."

While much of the reporting on this issue has been problematic, here are some other pieces that do a good job of honestly exploring this issue:

  • From Mother Jones magazine: "Most of Obama's 'Controversial' Birth Control Rule Was Law During Bush Years" [3]

  • From NPR's Morning Edition: "Rules Requiring Contraceptive Coverage Have Been In Force For Years" [4]

  • From NCR: Santa Clara University Ethics Director David DeCosse on how the "Bishops' conscience model makes light of practical reason" [5]

But some of the greatest wisdom I've read on the topic is to be found in the comments from many loyal and long-time NCR readers [6] and subscribers who commented on yesterday's editorial about this matter. I urge you to find the time to read them.
