Wolfe on Nisbet

Michael Sean Winters  |  Sep. 9, 2010 Distinctly Catholic

Regular readers will know of my fondness for the writings of Alan Wolfe, director of the Boisi Center at Boston College, as well as for the man who writes them. Wolfe is both a scholar and a gentleman.

I have never read one of his essays nor had a conversation with him when I did not learn something, which is why he is a great teacher, and I have never shared a coffee or a phone call with him that I did not enjoy, which is why he is a great friend.

Over at The New Republic, Wolfe has a review [1]of the recently republished book “The Quest For Community” by Robert Nisbet, one of the leading conservative intellectuals of his day. The book was originally published in 1953. Wolfe’s essay is short, so I will not comment upon it here except to say that it challenges both left and right in equal measure. That is reason enough to read it.
