San Jose auxiliary named Spokane bishop; Franciscan named to Lexington

Pope Francis has named Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Daly of San Jose, Calif., to head the diocese of Spokane, Wash., and Conventual Franciscan Fr. John Stowe to be bishop of Lexington, Ky.

Daly, 54, has been an auxiliary of the San Jose diocese since 2011. Stowe is a vicar provincial for his community and rector of the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio.

The appointments were announced Thursday in Washington by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Prayerfully and joyously welcomed into St. Patrick Cathedral for his installation Mass as the 11th bishop of the diocese of Harrisburg on Wednesday, Bishop Ronald Gainer held up St. Joseph -- whose feast the church celebrated that day -- as "a challenging example" for the members of the church.

Speaking of Joseph's designation as a "just man," Gainer said the description of the saint goes far beyond his decision to take Mary into his home, as was recounted in the day's Gospel.

Kentucky bishop named to Harrisburg; auxiliary named for Sacramento

Bishop Ronald Gainer of Lexington, Ky., has been named to head the diocese of Harrisburg, Pa., and the vicar general of the diocese of Fresno, Calif., has been named auxiliary bishop of Sacramento, Calif.

Pope Francis made the appointments Friday. They were announced in Washington by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Later in the day, the new bishops were introduced at news conferences in the two state capitals.
