Madison Bishop Robert Morlino’s dismissal of a pastoral associate in a Beloit, Wis., parish for alleged breaches of orthodoxy might have surprised some, but not local Catholics who know their bishop’s mind and are familiar with actions he has taken in his five years in the diocese.

Ruth Kolpack was let go from her post at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, one that she held since 1995, after meeting with Morino for 10 minutes earlier this month. During that meeting he asked her for an oath of loyalty and to denounce a scholarly thesis, supportive of women’s rights in the church, that she had written in 2003.

She agreed to the former, refused the latter -- and she was out of a job.

The bishop’s action has touched off a firestorm of protest inside and outside the diocese, which refuses to offer specifics for the dismissal, citing the need to respect Kolpack’s privacy.

Brent M. King, director of communications for the diocese, in response to an NCR query, issued a statement March 17, saying that it is “out of respect for the dignity and good reputation of every person involved” that specifics cannot be discussed.

Kolpack’s supporters have been more vocal. They say she has been gravely mistreated and they have formed protests and have written letters on her behalf.

They pieced together steps leading up to the dismissal, as they saw it. These included anonymous letters written to the bishop, a meeting she had with her pastor, Fr. Steve Kortendick, last January to discuss the complaints and a subsequent meeting with the diocesan chancellor, Kevin Phelan, which, they said, failed to achieve a “positive resolution.”KolpackKolpack

Kolpack has kept a low profile, but has said that during her 10-minute meeting with Morlino he informed her that her views on the teachings of Jesus were “off base.” He spoke to her about a thesis paper she wrote in 2003 for a master in divinity degree, granted to her from a local seminary. According to Kolpack, the bishop said he had only read “bits and pieces” of the paper. He then asked her to reassert her loyalty and orthodoxy. She was willing to do this, she said. However, she explained she could not denounce her academic paper.

The thesis, according to Kolpack supporters, focused on the need for greater inclusiveness in the church and the problems an overly patriarchal structure posed for many, especially women.

The Madison diocese communications office statement issued March 17 reiterated that all church members are bound by Christian obedience “to what the sacred pastors, who represent Christ, declare as teachers of the faith.” Truth must be taught, the statement said, “without compromise.” It explained that church staff must uphold faith and morals in their “public actions, associations and teachings” and that any contrary to church doctrine “are at worst seriously scandalous, and at best very inappropriate.”

Asserting, or reasserting, church orthodoxy has been a hallmark of the Morino tenure as bishop in Madison. In the process he has been a polarizing figure, viewed by his critics as narrow-minded, unfair and overbearing, and by his supporters as a much needed leader who is bringing truth and orthodoxy back to the diocese.

Morlino, 62, is the fourth bishop of the Madison diocese. Previously he served as the bishop of the Helena, Mont., diocese, was a priest in the Kalamazoo, Mich., diocese and was once a member of the Jesuit order. He assumed leadership in Madison in August 2003 and within months was creating waves.

After six months he made a controversial statement that he had found in Madison "a high comfort level with virtually no public morality." Some were not pleased with that assessment. After being confronted with what many saw as an unfair generalization he backed off, saying he had misspoken, explaining that he had been speaking in a philosophical sense.

“That was a much misunderstood statement,” he told a reporter. “I really did use the wrong word. Public morality is a technical term in philosophy. What it means is that people have common starting points for their moral reasonings. They have common ground, common presuppositions, like axioms in geometry. I don't think it's very controversial to say that in Madison there are no common starting points. That's all I meant to say.”

Morino has also stirred controversy with statements he has made concerning political issues and for his assessments of politicians, especially those with whom he disagrees.

Just before the November 2006 elections he required every parish in his diocese to hear a personally recorded message condemning capital punishment, gay marriage and embryonic stem-cell research. Dozens of parishioners walked out of Mass or stood with their backs to the altar when the message played. Others welcomed his muscular teaching of Catholic doctrine.

In a letter to priests -- leaked to the press at the time -- he said any signal of disagreement on their part "could have serious consequences."

Before the November election last year Morino singled out House Speak Nancy Pelosi and then vice-presidential candidate Sen. Joseph Biden for not upholding church teachings on abortion.

Morlino, who grew up in Biden's hometown of Scranton, Pa., criticized the fellow Catholic and U.S. senator from Delaware for what he called the "confusion" of Biden and Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi over the obligation of Catholics to oppose abortion.

"They're violating the separation between church and state by confusing people about what I have an obligation to teach. They're stepping on the pope's turf and mine," Morlino said at the time.

Morlino insisted his remarks were not intended to be political, that he was not criticizing Biden as a Democrat, but rather as a Catholic who didn't understand church teaching.

Morlino critics say such statements, intended to be political or not, are not evenhanded. They have said that while he was quick to call out Catholic politicians who he felt had deviated from church views regarding abortion, he has been slow to complain about Catholic politicians, including local state politicians, who were at odds with the church's teachings on preemptive war, poverty and the death penalty.

Asked once by a reporter if he felt he had polarized Catholics by denouncing gay marriage, he said he had no regrets.

“I had no intention of creating a stir. I really believe, honestly, that the stir was created when at least certain Catholics had the perception that some priests were not teaching clearly about marriage. ... The stir was out there. I had to respond to it, and I did, and I would do the same thing again. ... I really looked upon this as relieving certain priests of the responsibility to defend marriage if they felt that somehow there was going to be a certain discomfort about this at some level or another.”

Meanwhile, Morlino serves as chairman of the board of visitors for the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, formerly known as the School of the Americas. He has denied any wrongdoing by this military school that for decades has trained military officers from Latin America. Former students from this school have been accused of thousands of political killings, including the assassination of six Jesuit priests in El Salvador.

Morlino told a local newspaper in November 2007: "I know for a fact there is no evidence to connect what the school teaches with any kind of atrocity."

Morino again sparked controversy last year when he was accused of demanding confidential information from a survey he commissioned and then for refusing to pay the survey firm for its services when it rejected his demands.

In an ongoing lawsuit made public last June, the Phoenix Fundraising Counsel charged that Morino, contrary to his pledge, sought the names as well as the comments of priests who had been interviewed. The survey concerned the feasibility of a major campaign to erect the new cathedral. The suit stated that the 6,000 parishioners and 83 priests who participated in the survey were assured by a letter from Morlino that “all responses will be considered confidential,” so that everyone can “feel free to comment without fear of repercussion.”

But John Richert, president of Phoenix, said in the suit that when the responses were turned over to the bishop he “insisted on the disclosure of confidential data, including the names of specific priests who had expressed concerns or registered complaints about Bishop Morlino during the survey process.”

Richert refused. According to the suit, Morlino subsequently fired Phoenix and refused to pay some $350,000 for the work the company had done.

In a rebuttal, the diocese denied that Morlino sought the names of priests who had been interviewed. It said Phoenix was fired because its recommendations showed “a clear disregard” for Morlino’s instructions concerning where the new cathedral should be built and “was responding to interests other than [those of] the diocese.” The rebuttal claims the diocese has paid Phoenix $120,000.

Since Madison’s St. Raphael Cathedral was devastated by an arson fire in 2005, Morlino has been trying to garner support for a $70 million fundraising campaign, most of the money to go for a new cathedral. But opposition to the campaign has been strong, and the bishop has put it on hold.

Some local Catholics became so frustrated by Morino’s leadership that they took out a $3,500 full page “open letter” ad in a local paper to express their feelings. The letter accused Morino of ignoring input of clergy and laypeople, causing a climate of fear among priests who are afraid to publicly disagree with their bishop for fear of reprisal; of firing an openly gay music director; of hiring of priests who ban female altar servers; and of the alienation of Catholics who disagree with church doctrine as Morino expresses it.

"We need more compassion not dismissal," the letter said.

The diocese responded saying, "Certain groups, who claim to be Catholic, would assume postures which clearly are not in accord with the teachings of the church."

Morlino's fans are as passionate as his detractors.

Huan Hoang of Madison was quoted in a local newspaper as saying that he had been "a sleeper" Catholic until two years ago when he heard a Morlino homily. "He awakened my faith," Hoang said. "He needs to know that he's leading us to Jesus Christ, and at the end of the day, that's the only thing that's important."

What a laugh! The Bishop has

What a laugh! The Bishop has been head of the Diocese for 5 years? Judging by the reporting contained in the original article on the Subject, one would have assumed that he just swooped in and made a unilateral decision. No one has spoken of the scandal that Kolpack is stirring up. May God (who in the final analysis is the one that matters) rebuke her. Pray for all concerned and affected by this sad but necessary decision. Grace and peace with prayers always...

What scandal is Kolpack

What scandal is Kolpack stirring up? I have read 2 articles here and Kolpack's letter. What scandal are you speaking of? The scandal I see is of a Bishop who is more interested in asserting his rule than anything else.

It seems that Morlino is most

It seems that Morlino is most interested in "asserthing his rule" because of the way this article is written. I find very often that "progressive" Catholics are obsessed with authority in the Church. They impose upon pre-existing Chruch structures their own secret desire to rule over all, and model the Church in their own image.

Regarding what progressive

Regarding what progressive Catholics want: where does your research come from?

Bishop Robert Mugabe in Madison

Any excuse will serve a tyrant or a bully.

"The Wolf and the Lamb" (A Fable by Aesop)

A wolf noticed a lamb drinking just downstream. He thought she would be an easy supper. If he could trick her, he would not even have to run after her. Then he called out, ""We can drink from the same stream, friend, but you are making my water muddy."

The lamb said, "Nay, master wolf. If your water is muddy, I can't be the cause if it. You see, the water goes past you then it comes to me."
(READ: "This dissertation, "ROBERT MUGABE" was written in 2003 in a Seminary in which you were on the Board - you should ask the teachers at the Seminary who "TAUGHT" me this "HERESY")

The wolf changed the subject.
(BISHOP ROBERT MUGABE: "The dissertaion is NOT the only reason for "my firing")

He must make the lamb feel bad and helpless.
(Bishop Robert Mugabe: "I want you to RECANT your dissertation")

He said, "Why did you call me bad names this time last year?"
(Bishop Robert Mugabe: "Why did you criticize the Bishops and Pope John PaulII in your dissertation in 2003?)

The lamb said, "That could not have been me. I am only six months old."
(Read: "This dissertation was written in 2003. in a Seminary that was KNOWN to you! You were also on the Board at the St.Francis de Sales Seminary. Bishop Dolan was in charge of that Seminary, you should ask Bishop Dolan)

Then the wolf said, "I don't care. If it was not you, it was your father!"
(Bishop Robert Mugabe: "I dont care when it was written, or where it was written!")

He pounced upon the poor lamb, but the shepherd's dogs arrived in time to save her.
(Bishop Robert Mugabe fired the Pastoral Associate in 2009 for a 2003 "HERSY")

Will the shepherd's dogs (The teachers at St.Francis de Sales Seminary, where Kolpack wrote her dissertation come to her RESCUE, or are they also SCARED of BISHOP ROBERT MUGABE?) arrive in time to save the Pastoral Associate fired by Bishop Robert Mugabe?

I just love this comment. If God is the one who has the final analysis then why do you need to inform God to rebuke Ruth Kolpack?

How do you know when the God you worship is all in your head. When he rebukes the people you think he should.

By the way,Bishop Morlino was just as divisive in Helena Mt. as he has been in Madison, Wi. One should never ever forget that his theological degree is in Canon Law, otherwise known as advanced Catechism for clerics. He doesn't do or accept real theology. No wonder Ruth Kolpack got the axe.

One might have expected

One might have expected Bishop Morlino to have read the Kolpack's Thesis prior to telling her to denounce it. Saying women should have more influence in the Church is hardly a radical statement.
Kolpack seems to have raised little scandal. The same can't be said of Morlino. There is no hint that she has taught anything that is not church doctrine.
The Diocese made a big case that all of her rights had been respected. One might have expected that her judge/bishop would take the time to read the whole thesis rather than relying on excerpts.

It's a sad and an unnecessary decision.

Has anyone read Ruth

Has anyone read Ruth Kolpack's thesis?

Kolpack's thesis can be read here:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/13441413/Ruth-Kolpack-Thesis

Her thesis is an argument for the re-writing of the description of God to be female.

The thesis is titled, "Describing God by the Use of Female Imagery: a contribution of second Isaiah". The thesis is an argument that the metaphors of God should be changed to a mother rather than father, citing a passage in Isaiah saying "God gave birth" to the nation of Israel. In paragraph three she writes:
"...to free God language from the captivity of patriarchy".

This has nothing to do with support of 'women's rights in the Church'. Everybody supports contemporary women's rights wholeheartedly. Her thesis isn't about that, it's endorsing a radical feminist doctrine of re-creation of Catholicism into a goddess religion.

That's heresy at best, and bishops are under obligation of their office to defend and uphold well established Church doctrine regarding the description of God.

We have always had "Mother Church" in the doctrine, and the Mother of God. What her thesis endorses - changing the gender of God to female goddess - would require a complete rejection of Catholic Doctrine in the direction of the novel and movie "The DaVinci Code". Which is only one of such attempts.
Gnostic neo-pagans already have their own schismatic cults. Let her join one if she's serious in her beliefs. It's not Catholicism.

I think the Bishop is doing his job and request for Ruth Kolpack to withdraw this thesis is entirely appropriate and if anything he given her a lot of room to quietly retract this thesis without losing too much face. She's 'busted'.

If you have to be scared to

If you have to be scared to be Catholic, then there is a problem in Madison. Guess the only way to solve the problem is shut off the money. Voting with the wallet.

First of all Catholic don't

First of all Catholic don't vote. Sencondly, the Church will survive the dissidence of our day and will go on with or without your money. You worship money, The Body of Christ does not. And thirdly, "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" according to St. Paul. If you are finding salvation outside the Church founded by Christ, knock yourself out. Be very afraid.

If you want a story of grave

If you want a story of grave injustice and maltreatment, look into the case of beloved Father Gerry Vosen.

Isn't Morlino from Scranton?

Isn't Morlino from Scranton? Maybe Martino and Morlino should get together and discuss ways to drive people out of the church.

A bully in sheeps clothing is still a bully, and no more admirable with or without a cross around his neck.

As a ordained Lutheran Pastor

As a ordained Lutheran Pastor (ELCA) and a practitioner of Zen Buddhism for the last 17 years I find the words and actions of the Bishop against every teaching of love, compassion and inclusion of the Xian spiritual path and others. He is living in a prison of fear and exclusion that leads to terror in every sense of the word. A sick, sick man. May the power beyond all creation have mercy on his soul.

The real issue is, this is the Catholic church and many others as well.I am not happy with the ELCA as it plays games with inclusion as far as the GLTB community when it does not shout in justice from the mountain tops, that ALL people are welcome and able to be ordained and lay members of our church.

Bishop Morlino, you are everything a Bishop and a Christian is not. But who am I to say that...having been a member of a Xian community for a life time that still struggles with inclusion for woman, people of color and the GLTB Community. Step down brother you are not helping the healing of this world.

How dare you condemn a person that you do not know and accuse him of not being a man of God. Wow! Talking about being judgemental!

I think you need to spend more time looking in the mirror than casting stones at people that you don't even know.

Moderate Catholic

Moderate Catholic 20-something, I guess it is okay for a Bishop to not know the person he is condemning? Once Cardinal Ratzinger was on a plane sitting next to a woman he was condemning without ever meeting her. He had no idea who was sitting next to him because he refused to meet her. The woman related the story and said they had a wonderful converstaion and she regretted even more not being able to sit and talk with the Cardinal.

Moderate Catholic... watch who you throw stones at.

Brother Morlino has great plans to build a Great Cathedral, costing $70 million....Just do the Math, each household (70,000 households throughout the Diocese of Madison) cough up a thousand dollars per household, and you have it - $70 million. Wow!!
Brother Morlino is NO DUMMY...

Feasibility study: Parishioners give input
on diocesan priorities
By Mary C. Uhler
CATHOLIC HERALD STAFF

MADISON -- Some 70,000 households throughout the Diocese of Madison will be asked to give their input on determining potential funding for various diocesan projects, including the building of a cathedral.

Members of parishes will receive a Feasibility Study packet this weekend, November 10 and 11. The packet contains a letter from Bishop Robert C. Morlino and a survey form, which will be distributed after Masses at all parishes.

In his letter, Bishop Morlino points out that the Diocese of Madison has engaged the services of Phoenix Fundraising Counsel, Ltd., of Madison to conduct the Feasibility Study "to help us determine the ways and means of funding various diocesan projects, including the building of a Cathedral."

Phoenix, headed by John Richert, has previously worked on fund-raising campaigns in a number of parishes in the diocese.

"The purpose of the survey is to allow the entire diocesan family to be part of the process toward helping identify the needs and establishing support for a variety of diocesan projects," said Chad McEachern, director of the diocesan Office of Stewardship and Development."

"The importance of everyone's involvement in shaping the future of our Diocese through participation in this survey cannot be overstated. This is a natural extension of the good work done in the Guided by the Spirit planning process recently concluded," said McEachern.

In addition to rebuilding St. Raphael Cathedral, destroyed by an arson fire in March of 2005, some of the programs or services which could be funded by a capital campaign mentioned in the survey include: Hispanic ministry, Catholic education endowment, retired priest endowment, Catholic communications, Catholic Charities, Catholic cemeteries, youth and young adult programs, and St. Paul University Catholic Center at the University of Wisconsin and campus ministry.

Besides the survey, Phoenix has invited all priests of the diocese to be interviewed. Approximately 500 people were also identified throughout the diocese for personal interviews.

Phoenix will enter all the responses into a database and conduct an analysis of the responses. This analysis will provide the basis for Phoenix to make recommendations to the diocese on an estimate of how much can be raised in a capital campaign as well as operational and marketing strategies for a campaign.

McEachern said it is expected that a report will be presented to Bishop Morlino by the end of the year. "This will allow the bishop to assess what is feasible for the diocese to do and then decide how to proceed," he said.

Bishop Morlino concludes his letter by saying, "We appreciate your support and prayers as we prepare the Diocese of Madison for the next generation of families."

Parishioners will be asked to return the survey forms, which include 16 questions, no later than November 18. They may return the completed form at their parish office, deposit it in the weekend collection basket, or mail it to Phoenix Fundraising by folding the self-addressed survey.

Re the Morlino matter,

Re the Morlino matter, Anonymous writes: "If you have to be scared to be Catholic, then there is a problem in Madison. Guess the only way to solve the problem is shut off the money. Voting with the wallet." Knock it off, Anonymous. Whom are you going to scare with your threat to "shut off the money"? It's a childish tactic. Instead of "voting with your wallet," I'd suggest you "vote with your conscience" and debate the issues on their own merit. You're probably scared to go toe-to-toe with a tough and outspoken bishop like Morlino. By the by, I wonder how much you open your wallet to the Church.

This is so strange. The

This is so strange. The Thesis passed muster at a Catholic Seminary. However the Bishop having read only "bits and pieces" six years later then demands she immediately repudiate it in its entirety.

If the Bishop had said "I (or one of my staff) read it and I believe the following is heretical" then gave specifics, and asked her to correct her error, that would be one thing. But to declare it "off base" whatever that means, and make it a basis to fire somebody is just bizarre. Reading parts of my own MA Thesis thirty years later I realize that "bits and pieces" of it were "off base." I hope I don't get fired for it.

This "firing" of the Pastoral

This "firing" of the Pastoral Associate appears to be a case of:
"If you don't like the Message, shoot the Messenger!!"

It is odd that the Bishop has not faulted the University (during the last FIVE years), where this "Heretical" Master's Thesis was written.
The Bishop (as an Ex-Jesuit) has a great academic background too:

he graduated from the Maryland Jesuit seminary,
he completed an undergraduate degree of Philosophy at Fordham University.
he studied at the University of Notre Dame (Master of Philosophy),
he studied at Weston School of Theology (Master of Divinity),
he studied at the Gregorian University (Doctor of Moral Theology).
he taught philosophy at Boston College, the University of Notre Dame, and Loyola College.

So why is he scared of "faulting" the University where this "HERETICAL" thesis was written? Or did he try and was told to "MIND HIS OWN BUSINES"

The seminary did not write

The seminary did not write the thesis, they taught the classes. Every person perceives according to lived experience. You and I can take the same classes and get totally different ideas from them. One could get an "A" and one a "D" and both still pass.

There were other things besides this thesis that caused her firing and we do not know what they are. We are judging people, I thought that was God's work, who gave us that authority?

You dont get it!! The

You dont get it!!

The Seminary DID ACCEPT the Thesis in 2003. If the Thesis had contained "HERETICAL" views, it was incumbent upon a CATHOLIC SEMINARY to have pointed that out and rejected that Thesis in 2003, when it was submitted.

The Seminary must have felt that there was "NOTHING HERETICAL" in the Thesis and therefore allowed it in 2003. In which case, the Bishop is WRONG in his interpretation in 2009.

If the Bishop still feels that the THESIS ought not to have been permitted in 2003, and that it is "HERTICAL", he ought to take his case to the Seminary, and ask them to "DECLARE" THIS "THESIS" as "Heretical".

The Professors who accepted this Thesis owe an "EXPLANATION". They too ought to be "FIRED", not just the FEMALE Student (who happens to be his employee), who wrote the Thesis.

IS the Bishop too "SCARED" of "facing" the PROFESSOR at the SEMINARY, who accepted the THESIS?

The Bishop could be accused of showing his "COURAGE" only with a "FEMALE EMPLOYEE" over whom he had power, but as a Bishop who did NOT have the "COURAGE" to FACE the SEMINARY PROFESSOR who accepted the THESIS?

This is an EXCELLENT Legal Case that the Bishop is bound to get entangled in, sooner if not later. This case could as well go all the way to the Supreme Court, and the Bishop could be spending tens of Thousands of Dollars in Legal Fees until his retirement.

It is time for the Bishop (before it is too late) to "FIRE" the Seminary Professor too, and ask him/her to publicly "RECANT" that "HERETICAL THESIS". The SOONER the Bishop does this, the BETTER. He already has one "BAD" case in the Courts. He does not need another case, that will wipe out all the money collected in the Diocese for rebuilding the Cathedral.

The Bishop may not have much time left to "FIX" the "MESS" that he had created. Sooner if not later, this would reach the ears of the Apostolic Nuncio Pietro Sambi at 3339 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W, Washington, DC, USA [Telephone: (202)333-7121], [Fax: 337-4036]

What a CAN OF WORMS!!

Plato is on target! Bishop

Plato is on target!

Bishop Morlino's ambitions are too limited. He dismissed Kolpack from her ministry (NCR 3/20/09), but he failed to indict those faculty members at St. Francis Seminary who approved her thesis. They, too, should be dismissed. If he would dig further, he would find that even a bishop who was formerly a professor at this seminary held and taught the views upheld by Ruth Kolpack. To be consistent, therefore, Bishop Morlino should mount a canonical investigation directed toward having this bishop defrocked.

But even this does not go far enough. To be consistent, Bishop Morlino would surely want to have the Prophet Isaiah removed from the canonical books because, under a holy inspiration, he (falsely?) attributed feminine characteristics to our God.

And, once Isaiah is duly silenced, then Bishop Morlino needs to proceed further to purge from the Gospels all traces of Jesus' words wherein he used the experience of women to herald the Kingdom of God and wherein he spoke of himself as "a mother hen" (Luke 13:31-35).

And once Jesus' words are scrubbed clean, Bishop Morlino must be urged not to settle for half-hearted measures but to proceed to sanitize the recorded words of all former pastors and prophets and saints within the Church. Over 1,000 years ago, for instance, St. Anselm prayed to incarnate Son of God as his mother: “Jesus, as a mother you gather your people to you; you are gentle with us as a mother with her children.” Likewise, we have another canticle by Julian of Norwich: “Christ came in our poor flesh to share a mother’s care. Our mothers bear us for pain and for death; our true mother, Jesus, bears us for joy and endless life.” All such words must be stricken from their published works, and all manuscript editions must be artfully amended.

This task will take many years, yes, even many lifetimes; yet, this effort will be triumphant. All references to God and to Jesus that even hint of anything feminine will have been eradicated. Then will males be able to safely worship at Catholic altars without ever hearing or reading that God and Jesus have ever been referenced in anything but male terms. Then and only then will Bishop Morlino be able to rest in peace since males and males alone will finally be secure in the knowledge that they and they alone are the exclusively chosen images of God in every Eucharist for all times and in all places until the end of the world.

Amen. Amen. Come Lord Jesus!

How do you know that? "There

How do you know that?
"There were other things besides this thesis that caused her firing".

Unless you are on the payroll of the Bishop, and you had been asked to write this, why are you remaining "ANONYMOUS" and afraid to disclose who you are?

Your statement:

"We are judging people, I thought that was God's work, who gave us that authority?" is a "PRO-BISHOP" Platitude.

Why don't you try telling the Bishop that:

"We are judging people, I thought that was God's work, who gave us that authority?"

Then, you too MAY get "FIRED". Then all those "other things beside the thesis" will come out in the WASH.

As a former parishioner of St. Raphael Cathedral and resident of the Diocese of Madison, I LOVED Bishop Morlino. He is the type of Bishop that the Archdiocese of Cleveland needs: someone who will call people when they are defying what the Church teaches and will force people who claim to be "Catholic" to perhaps leave. Preferably in droves. We need people who do believe in the totality of the Church, not selected bits.

My criticism of Bishop Richard Lennon is that he is an administrator, not a deeply passionate Bishop the way Bishop Morlino is. The Church needs more Morlinos, not fewer!

Indeed, God bless Bishop

Indeed, God bless Bishop Molino, Ruth and all of us created in the image of God!!

Are you really, absolutely sure that you know who is on the "true" side of the prophesying and teaching? By what authority do know this? Even the Scribes and the Pharisees knew when to say nothing (Mt. 21:23).

Shall we say that the "rebuke" has already been given - the cathedral burns down and there is no money to rebuild it? Judgement? Do you want to see God this way? Live in freedom, not fear of divine retribution.

Jesus himself told the Samaritan woman (the "outsider") that we will worship God in Spirit and truth (Jn 4:24)- and she proclaimed the Good News while the Apostles got caught up in the protocol of the day!!

GOd have mercy on all of us!

THESE MONSTERS WE CREATE SLAUGHTER AND CONTROL HIS FELLOW JESUITS AND HE SEES NO EVIDENCE??

wait a minute.
why was he thrown out of the Jesuits?

wait a minute.

Why is a great and courageous and prophetic and true and compassionate Catholic priest like the REverend Father Roy Bourgeois told, "Hey, Roy, by the way, you're excommunicated." while THIS pervert gets promoted?

Jesus will ask us:
Dude,
Where's my Church?

Dear "Frere" Charles, Two

Dear "Frere" Charles,

Two things.

1. Learn how to use correct Benedictine title usage. A "Frere" would be someone who was a Dominican, Franciscan or any of the other mendicant orders. Benedictine monks/oblates would use the title, "Dom"...not "Frere".

2. I suggest you read the REAL Rule of St. Benedict and read the part the talks about "listening to the Master" and "Holy Obedience".

Obviously since you are NOT a REAL Benedictine, I don't expect you to follow through with my advice. It sounds like you are a person who wanted to become a monk, but couldn't hack it because of your twisted theology and/or homosexual lifestyle prohibited you from joining the REAL Benedictines.

Have fun living out your delusional charade. :-)

BTW...tell Mr. Hand that I said "hello"!

Dear NCR: Re: "Moderate

Dear NCR:
Re: "Moderate Catholic20 something". Is there not some supervision over the civility and decency of comments vis a vis standards here?

Dear "Mod" Thank you for your

Dear "Mod"

Thank you for your advice and concern. I shall inform my thousands of Benedictine frere's of your insight and wisdom. Dom thus far is reserved for those who are ordained; how delightful for our poor freres confreres to learn they too are now considered by your book Doms, which of course is a shortening of the Latin word Dominus, or Lord. On second thought, the vast majority if not all of our humble Benedictine Freres would be horrified to be addressed in this way.

Are we unordained and poor freres also free now, by your book, to say unto others Dominus vobiscum, which thus far is conserved for the presider of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? The Rule for Monks written by Our Holy Father Saint Benedict finds it more appropriate for his monks to beg a blessing than to grant one. Benedicite!

As you declare yourself the Master, I shall hear you, following the first word of the Holy Rule for Monks of our Holy Father Saint Benedict: Ausculta!

I have no idea who might be Mr. Hand, but I shall certainly beg his blessing and send your greetings. Perhaps my lack of what you allege proved more an encumbrance than its presence.

In any case I ask you in turn to pray for this dedicated servant of our Church who so lovingly and compassionately fulfilled the Gospel of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for so many decades in the absence of ordained clergy, as foreseen in the brilliant works on ministry by the great and Catholic theologian the Dominican preacher and Reverend Father Schillebeeckx. Pray this dear sister in our Church family may find the sustenance to live in this time of economic downturn and vast unemployment, having been turned out of doors with no job instead of her well deserved retirement with a pension. Would it not have been more compassionate and equally effective in achieving this bishop's unorthodox goals to retire her rather than to fire her so strangely and with such lack of transparency? Who indeed can ever replace her?

What is your problem? Why

What is your problem? Why would you not only attack this person, but the entire homosexual community? I am a strong and proud heterosexual ally to the homosexual community and will not stand for your disgusting attacks.

You say nothing about Frere's arguments. No, instead you use ad hominems to attempt to humiliate. Come down from your pious chair and offer constructive arguments or criticism.

You know, "Moderate"

You know, "Moderate" Catholic, you seem to have a hobby of spewing insulting, rude, divisive comments on NCR's site. I would suggest that you lurk elsewhere if you want to continue. If you hate everything NCR reports on and everyone who has a brain that can think outside the hierarchy, you would be much happier hanging out at the Register or Our Sunday Visitor or First Things or someplace like that, I imagine. You like telling people who have the slightest disagreement with the Church to "love it or leave it." I suggest you'd be happier if you did the same regarding this news site.

Bishop defends controversial post Friday, February 23rd 2007

Samara Kalk Derby, The Capital Times

Diocese of Madison Bishop Robert Morlino's position as chairman of the Board of Visitors of the former School of the Americas is nothing more than a way for the controversial organization to help legitimize itself, say local critics of the military school.

The bishop's presence on the board has drawn criticism since he joined it in 2005, but Thursday night's packed forum at the Catholic Multicultural Center was unusual because Morlino was there to answer the critics himself.

"We feel that your position, Bishop Morlino, on the Board of Visitors legitimizes the School of the Americas and its policies in the eyes of the public," Barbara Alvarado of the Madison-Arcatao (El Salvador) Sister City Project told Morlino at the forum on Madison's south side.

"We don't believe that an advisory position, even one intended to improve the School of the Americas, serves the communities in South and Central America or even in the U.S.," Alvarado said. "It is not time to improve the School of the Americas. It is time to shut it down."

Alvarado's remarks were met with overwhelming applause from an audience of about 70, who were not shy about voicing their disapproval of the bishop's role with the school, now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, or WHINSEC.

The institute, in Fort Benning, Ga., is the Defense Department's program to train Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency and military strategy. It has long been accused of human rights violations on the part of some of its graduates.

Morlino defended the institute and his position.

"I am used to hearing things that I don't like to hear in Madison, you know that," he told the crowd.

Morlino repeatedly said that he is unable to answer questions about the institute's history. Instead, he said he could only speak to what he has observed in the year and a half that he has served on the board.

He said the institute asked him to join the board to help it "improve its good name."

Morlino said he was surprised to be asked to be on the board and then surprised again to be asked to chair the board late last year.

He accepted, he said, because he thought it would be a way to serve his country since he was exempt from the draft during the Vietnam War because he was in the seminary. In terms of allegations about past graduates of the institute, Morlino said the Department of Defense and the institute have no records of any wrongdoing on behalf of its graduates.

Members of the crowd began grumbling, and one person mumbled "Lie!"

Kate McCoy, a UW-Madison doctoral student in sociology, did a statistical analysis two years ago while researching her master's thesis. She looked at 12,000 graduates of the School of the Americas between 1960 and 2000 and found that the longer a soldier studied at the school, the more human rights abuses that person carried out.

"There was a very, very strong correlation," she said.

Marc Rosenthal, a Meriter Hospital emergency room nurse who teaches at Edgewood College, called Morlino a right-wing, Catholic ideologue.

"I don't think it was a coincidence that they ask you to be on the board. They asked you because of your politics," he said.

"You've got to say 'no' to the legacy of violence and terror," said Rosenthal, who is also a member of the Madison-Arcatao Sister City Project, and has worked for more than 25 years to improve conditions in El Salvador. "It can't be legitimated. You can't legitimize terrorism."

The sister city project was formed in 1986 in response to the killings in Arcatao's town square by graduates of the School of the Americas, according to Alvarado, who is on the project's volunteer board and spent the past nine years as its staff person.

During frequent visits to its sister city, whenever project members ask Arcatao residents what they want from their U.S. partners, the response is always the same, "Close the School of the Americas," Alvarado said.

Morlino said "it is certain" that graduates of the school have gone on to do bad things. But there are graduates of Harvard and Yale who have become dictators and have also done bad things, he said. Audience members groaned at that.

Morlino said that institute graduates in the last two years have done "a tremendous job" of controlling the activities of gangs and drug traffickers in Latin America.

"It's something recent graduates have excelled at and the school has a right to be proud of that," he said.

The Church is in the Truth

The Church is in the Truth business

"And my second point is that the Church is here to teach the Truth and thus to sanctify the world. The Church is in the Truth business."

So says Morlino.

Will Morlino "CONFESS" as to how he was "ASKED" and by whom to join the School of the Americas?

Will he tell the TRUTH now or wait till he is ASKED in Court?

Two things:

1) "Dude, where's my Church?" cracked me up!

2) Moderate Catholic 20-Something - in the midst of your mocking response to this poster, I noticed that you didn't even reply to what was actually written. For many Catholic religious and laity, Bishop Morlino's presence on the board of SOA/WHINSEC serves to legitimize an institution that has used taxpayer dollars to teach terror on American soil and trained soldiers to murder and rape Catholic priests and nuns. Is that not problematic? While you talk about listening and obedience (which I think you're taking out of context of the Rule, but that's a different story), it's quite likely that the original poster is not bound by these rules to this bishop. Furthermore, disagreeing with the choice of a bishop to serve on a board does not qualify as "disobedience," especially because Bishop Morlino is not using his teaching authority in this position.

Letter to Morlino To: The

Letter to Morlino

To: The Most Reverend Robert C. Morlino, D.D., Bishop of Madison
Your Excellency:

http://www.petitiononline.com/quitsoa/petition.html

We, the undersigned, urge you to resign your position on the advisory board of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, formerly known as the School of the Americas.

Father Roy Bourgeois, MM, has done extensive work in researching this institute and its history in teaching torture techniques. He has published some of his findings in his book, Disturbing the Peace.

We urge you to read Father Bourgeois’ book and to speak with him about this grievous matter.

On December 13th, 2005, His Eminence, Most Rev’d Renato Cardinal Martino, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, made the following statement:

"Torture is the humiliation of a person, whoever that person is. For this reason, the Church does not accept it as valid this means to extract the truth."

The Church must not accept the endeavors of the Institute for Security Cooperation.

The Church in the United States has seen too many scandals in this new century. The worst of them were physical violations of human dignity. Your membership on the advisory board of the aforementioned organization deepens the scandal.

The hierarchy’s failure to denounce the practice of torture by the current Administration in Washington will be a dark page in the history of the Church.

"Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." ~ Ephesians 5: 11

Sincerely,

I am sad about what Ruth

I am sad about what Ruth Kolpack went through with our Bishop and I believe that her firing is very unfair. A six year old thesis she wrote that is suddenly being probed!? And, anonymous letters sent to the diocese? Incredible. Let's make a movie out of this! She is not the only parish or diocesan staff employee that's been axed by Bishop Morlino or his 'right hand' staff! I know this because I experienced a similar fate in this diocese, too! We all need to step forward and complain! I agree that perhaps by shutting off the money maybe someone will hear us roar! That means when your parish asks for Diocesan Service Appeal dollars (the taxation on the parish by the diocese)....hold the money. It's time that Catholics step up to the plate and speak out on what's wrong in Madtown. Bishop Morlino needs to move on to greater pastures outside of the Diocese of Madison!

Morlino is considered to be under consideration for Archbishop of Milwaukee...heaven forbid! He also gave the singularly most boring talk I've ever heard...heads were nodding & even a few snores were heard.

Faith isn't boring...it's uplifting, fascinating, life-giving...guess it's not that way in the Madison diocese at present.

Morlino would make an ideal

He would have no problem "hiring thugs" to do his "WILL".

He could live in a MANSION, have a SWISS BANK ACCOUNT and even be made a CARDINAL.

Bishop Morlino talks about school in podcast

Asked whether military standards should be held to the same level of accountability as Catholic standards, Bishop Morlino said, "Yes, insofar as Catholic Christian standards are the reflection of the natural law. In other words, we can't impose distinctive Catholic beliefs or distinctive Catholic practices on the military."

Is he crazy? If the Church

Is he crazy? If the Church can't impose distinctive Catholic beliefs on the military, then shut up about abortion. Surely that qualifies as a distinctive Catholic belief (not in the sense that Catholics alone hold this belief, but in the sense that most of society does not). Come on, bishop. Get your stories straight--yes to terrorism but no to abortion?? How absurd. His rationalization is just another example of rampant duplicity by the episcopal hierarchy in the Catholic Church.

Bishop Morlino not only has

Bishop Morlino not only has an over-inflated ego and "God-complex", he has no respect for others' opinions. There have been bullies like him all over the world, but it is an embarassment to have him represent the hierachy of the church. People's deep faith in the love and wisdom of God keeps many Catholics from simply leaving the church. We stay inspite of Bishop Morlino, not because of him.

Bishop Egon Kapellari of Graz-Seckau and Cardinal Christoph Schonborn of Vienna attend an extraordinary meeting of the Austrian bishops' conference in Vienna Feb. 16. Austrian named auxiliary bishop asks pope to withdraw his nomination
By Catholic News Service
Posted: 2/16/2009

LINZ, Austria (CNS) -- Bishop-designate Gerhard Wagner said he would ask Pope Benedict XVI to withdraw his nomination as auxiliary bishop of Linz "given the fierce criticism" of his appointment.

The 54-year-old parish priest, who was named an auxiliary bishop Jan. 31, issued a statement Feb. 15 saying that after prayer and consultation with the diocesan bishop, "in the interest of and for the benefit of the diocese, I have decided to ask the Holy Father to withdraw my nomination."
The statement was published Feb. 15 on the Web site of the Diocese of Linz.

The uproar over his appointment stemmed mainly from comments he made implying that Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was a punishment from God for sins committed in New Orleans.

As of Feb. 16, the Vatican had not announced any change in Bishop-designate Wagner's appointment.

After a meeting Feb. 16 in Vienna, the diocesan bishops of Austria issued a statement saying they supported Bishop-designate Wagner's request to withdraw, although they also reaffirmed their belief that it is best for the church that the pope appoint bishops.

If a bishop were to be elected by the faithful at large, they said, "conflicts would be inevitable."

However, the bishops' statement also said that the canon law procedure for choosing a bishop, which calls for consultation with other bishops, priests of the diocese and lay leaders, is important for ensuring support and an appropriate welcome for new bishops.

"The procedure provided for in canon law for the selection and the examination of candidates (for the office of bishop) has proved its worth, if this procedure really is followed," they said.

The Austrian bishops did not refer directly to the fact that Bishop-designate Wagner once linked the 2005 Katrina disaster to what he called "the spiritual pollution" plaguing New Orleans.

"The amoral conditions in this town are indescribable," he said in a parish newsletter in 2005, after Hurricane Katrina had devastated New Orleans.

"This is not just any city which has been drowned, but the people's dream town with the 'best brothels and the most beautiful whores,'" he said, according to excerpts from the newsletter which appeared on the Austrian Catholic Web site Kath.net.

The Austrian newspaper Osterrich reported Feb. 2 that the bishop-designate denied describing Hurricane Katrina or the 2004 Asian tsunami as a punishment from God.

But the newspaper quoted him as saying it was probably not a coincidence the tsunami took place at Christmastime, "when people from the rich world go to poor Thailand to enjoy the world."

The bishop-designate, who received a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, also told the newspaper he believes the Harry Potter book series is "satanic."

Austria's bishops to discuss 'crisis' over resistance to bishop's appointment
February 13, 2009
Acknowledging a "crisis" for Catholicism in their country, Austria's Catholic bishops will meet in Vienna on Monday to discuss the popular opposition to the Pope's selection of a conservative priest, Father Gerhard Maria Wagner, to become an auxiliary bishop of the Linz diocese. Some priests have violently objected to the appointment, pointing to Father Wagner's view that a decline in morality amounts to "spiritual pollution" of society.

Bishop controversy prompts Austrian Catholics to meet

ASSOCIATED PRESS

VIENNA — Vienna's Roman Catholic archdiocese says the country's bishops will meet to discuss widespread objections to the Vatican's decision to promote a conservative pastor who suggested Hurricane Katrina was provoked by sin.

The archdiocese said top church official Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn will convene the special session in the Austrian capital on Monday.

Pope Benedict XVI promoted the Rev. Gerhard Maria Wagner to the post of auxiliary bishop in Linz on Jan. 31, causing an outcry from church groups and priests.

Wagner has questioned whether Katrina was a result of "spiritual pollution" and has characterized Harry Potter novels as Satanism.

The Catholic news agency Kathpress quoted Schoenborn as saying believers should know all is being done to "overcome the crisis."

Another Witch-hunt?

An Archbishop Falls to a Witch-hunt
By Andrew Purvis
Sunday, Jan. 07, 2007
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1574882,00.html

The service, held in Warsaw's medieval St John's Cathedral, in the heart of the old town, did not turn out as expected. It was intended to mark the elevation of Stanislaw Wielgus, 67, to the post of Archbishop of Warsaw, the most important post in the Polish Catholic Church. Instead, the archbishop began his service by reading from a letter he had just completed to the Vatican: "After profound reflection and assessment of my personal situation, I submit to the hands of Your Holiness my resignation from the office of Warsaw Metropolitan Archbishop," he read. Wielgus's resignation, which was accepted by Rome, followed two weeks of allegations that he had collaborated with the secret police during the communist era. "NO! NO! NO!" supporters chanted in the cavernous 13th Century cathedral. "Stay with us!!" Later, they paraded his portrait through the streets of the Polish capital alongside a banner that read: "This is Warsaw's spirit!"

Wielgus has become the most famous victim of a process known as "lustration" — a word meaning "purification" — that is under way across eastern Europe. Embraced as a political weapon by right-wing parties against their enemies, it is targeting anyone with even remote ties to the communist past. In Poland this process has gained fresh momentum over the past year following the election of a right-wing, anti-communist coalition government led by twin brothers who began their careers battling communists alongside Lech Walesa and the Solidarity trade union movement. Cardinal Jozef Glemp, who is standing in for Wielgus until the Vatican names a replacement, said a witch-hunt is under way: "Today Archbishop Wielgus was tried. But what kind of trial is carried out on the basis of scraps of paper?" he told the congregation at St. John's after Wielgus stepped down. "We don't want such trials!"

Many Poles — up to two million — are known to have collaborated in some way with the secret police of the communist regime that ruled the country from 1945 to 1989. Often, those efforts did not amount to active spying. Communist agents would identify potential collaborators, including those who wanted to travel abroad or who sought posts over which the state had control, and ask them to sign papers indicating their willingness to pass on information. Some were threatened with the loss of their job or separation from their family if they did not cooperate. Wielgus's case may have been typical: he was approached by secret police after requesting permission to travel abroad to study and agreed to sign a paper indicating his willingness to pass on information. He has admitted doing as much but denies that he actually spied on colleagues.

The Catholic Church holds a particularly influential position in Polish society, and rumors about priests collaborating with the old regime, though common, have never been substantiated. In 1990 a large number of files held by the communist interior ministry on the Polish clergy mysteriously vanished. A former communist official later said they were handed over to the Church. More recently, a priest in Krakow named Tadeusz Isakowicz Zaleski, who was working on a book about priests in the Krakow diocese who cooperated with communist secret police, was ordered to be silent by Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, the former personal secretary of Pope John Paul II. The late pontiff, while a strident anti-communist, was not unsympathetic to Polish priests who had cooperated with communists authorities, who then held absolute sway over his native land.

The Vatican watched the mounting Wielgus controversy over the past week and finally decided that it would be better to have the prelate go now rather than wait until after he was made Archbishop. Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, said the Pope had accepted the resignation because the Polish bishop's previous "behavior... had seriously compromised his authority." The result is a clear embarrassment for Pope Benedict XVI, who personally selected Wielgus for the post. Lombardi sought to spread the blame. He cited a "strange alliance" between former Communist authorities and their then adveraries who, he claims, are working to undermine the Church. "More than a sincere search for transparency and truth, the current wave of attacks against the Catholic Church in Poland contains many signs of ... a vendetta," Lombardi said .

Maybe. But the only evidence of a strange alliance in Poland is among ultra-right parties staunchly opposed to communism. The newspapers that leaked the stories about Wielgus's collaboration, such as the weekly Gazeta Polska, are all on the far right of the political spectrum. Wielgus's case may lead to fresh accusations against other members of the Polish church. The Vatican has hinted that new revelations may be coming and a new book about collaborating priests is due out in Poland in March.

The only Loyalty Oath a Catholic need take is at Baptism and at Confirmation and at the Renewal of our Baptismal Vows. That is all, and anything more is fascist, not Catholic.

The only statement of beliefs a Catholic need make is the Credo we recite each Sunday (with varying degrees of attentiveness, certainly). Anything more is fascistic, not Catholic.

Credo in unum Deum.

Deus caritas est.

This is the point made by the elderly and holy and righteous Roman Catholic theologian the Reverend Father Tissa Balasuriya when he refused to take an unorthodox creed personally fashioned by then head of the Holy Office Ratzinger, and instead chose a more orthodox Catholic Public Profession of Faith. For this clinging to his Catholic Faith alone was he (temporarily) excommunicated by a highly uncharitable Vatican office.

This man is not a leader but

This man is not a leader but a muddle of contradicitons. The church in Madison apparently is in much need of intelligent leadership. I am so sorry for Kolpack and the poor people of this diocese.

Jesus, too, was ridiculed by the Jewish hierarchy when he was totally inclusive; he ate with sinners and tax collectors, etc. Luckily, when we ALL get to heaven, we will ALL be included. Kolpack and other women will be just as warmly welcomed as you who are trying to reject half of God's children. And, they will sit at the head of the table for being persecuted on Jesus' behalf as they try to bring about the Kingdom as Jesus modeled for us.

The Bishop ought to read

The Bishop ought to read Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians and "UNDERSTAND" it too:

"I SAY THIS TO SHAME YOU...."

I Corinthinas 6: 1-11
How can any one of you with a case against another dare to bring it to the unjust for judgment instead of to the holy ones?
Do you not know that the holy ones will judge the world?
If the world is to be judged by you, are you unqualified for the lowest law courts?
Do you not know that we will judge angels?
Then why not everyday matters?
If, therefore, you have courts for everyday matters, do you seat as judges people of no standing in the church?

I say this to shame you.
Can it be that there is not one among you wise enough to be able to settle a case between brothers?
But rather brother goes to court against brother, and that before unbelievers?
How indeed (then) it is, in any case, a failure on your part that you have lawsuits against one another.
Why not rather put up with injustice?
Why not rather let yourselves be cheated?
Instead, you inflict injustice and cheat, and this to brothers.

Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God?
Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor sodomites nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.

That is what some of you used to be; but now you have had yourselves washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
***************************************************************************

It is a sad day for the Church in America (plagued by its numerous Pedophile Scandals) that a Catholic BIshop brings the Church to "RIDICULE AND SHAME" like this, instead of "RESOLVING ISSUES" with Maturity and tact. It is just another sign of this Bishop's lack of "MANGERIAL SKILLS"

"The suit stated that the 6,000 parishioners and 83 priests who participated in the survey were assured by a letter from Morlino that “all responses will be considered confidential,” so that everyone can “feel free to comment without fear of repercussion.”

In a rebuttal, the diocese denied that Morlino sought the names of priests who had been interviewed."

For the good of the Church, the Parishoners at Madison ought to seek the intervention of USCCB before this becomes another SCANDAL.

From Yakima to Tacoma, a group of local people is hoping its voice will be heard all the way to Georgia next weekend. The Yakima-area people are joining together to attend a nonviolent vigil in Tacoma on Nov. 16 to protest the continued operation of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation at Fort Benning, Ga.

The institute, formerly called the School of the Americas, has been the focus of annual peaceful protests for more than 10 years.

Protesters criticize the institute's training of Latin American soldiers in commando tactics and combat and psychological operations.

In 1989 six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her teenage daughter were massacred in El Salvador. A U.S. Congressional Task Force subsequently reported that those responsible were trained at the School of the Americas.

This will be the first time a vigil has been organized in Tacoma to protest the institute. People will gather at noon at Portland Avenue Park and march to the U.S. Federal Building.

Members of Pax Christi-Yakima Valley, a group that promotes nonviolence, and parishioners of several local churches are leading the trip to Tacoma.

Bravo to Bishop Morlino. He has shown great charity to Ruth in this sad and unfortunate situation and has even said that he wants to protect Ruth's 'good reputation'. It's funny that a lot of the folks on here...do not mention that bit of charity from Bishop Morlino but instead are quick to offer arrows and hateful rhetoric towards the bishop.

Moderate Catholic, Once you

Moderate Catholic,

Once you get fired from your job (unless you too are a MALE CATHOLIC PRIEST or BISHOP, living off OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY!!) and have to put food on the table for your family,
your "MODERATE" catholicism will soon convert to "FRANTIC CATHOLICISM".

It is time you take the time to read the BIBLE before your next "MODERATE" post.

St.Paul stayed with Aquila and Priscilla (a woman) and WORKED as a TENTMAKER, earning his own KEEP, not living off OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY LIKE MORLINO!!

ACTS 18: 1-5 -

After this he left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. He went to visit them and, because he practiced the same trade, stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade. Every sabbath, he entered into discussions in the synagogue, attempting to convince both Jews and Greeks.
When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began to occupy himself totally with preaching the word, testifying to the Jews that the Messiah was Jesus.

Peace,
Frantic Catholic

Bravo, indeed. Will Bishop

Bravo, indeed.

Will Bishop Morlino choose SIX women too this Maundy Thursday for the "Washing of Feet", as allowed by the US Conference of catholic Bishops since 1987, or like the Cardinal at Boston revert to MEN ONLY?

the US Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1987 declared that ``it has become customary in many places to invite both men and women to be participants in this rite in recognition of the service that should be given by all the faithful to the Church and to the world.

Prelate disallows women in ritual
Washing of the feet is limited to males
By Michael Paulson, Globe Staff | April 10, 2004

Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley, reversing the practice of Cardinal Bernard F. Law, declined this week to wash the feet of women because Jesus had no female apostles.

I find that a bit of charity

I find that a bit of charity would have been to read the entire thesis and sit down with what he thinks s wrong and talk it out. Unfortunately all of these bishops think that the people in the pew should not think or question but just obey. The the last time I checked God is to be obeyed. Does Bishop Marino have a God complex?

My, could the author be

My, could the author be anymore biased? Excuse me, Mr. Fox, your lack of credibility as a jounalist is showing! Perhaps Ms Kolpack is your aunt or something?

I would love to hear more about the scandal caused by Kolpack. I am sure there is another side to this story, but it won't be found in this rag.

And how nasty can a Bishop be; insisting a Catholic in a position of influence affirm her faith according the CCC! The Bishop is SUPPOSED TO keep the Truth of Catholic doctrine alive and well for the sake of the souls he will personally answer for.

The woman who puts the sin of pride and scandal(which are whoppers of sins)ahead of Christ's Church will have to answer for those she has lead astray as well. The Bishop does not judge her, only her actions and is required to make the results known to the faithful.

God Bless this Bishop for doing the job he was ordained to do. We need more of them.

"He has denied any wrongdoing

"He has denied any wrongdoing by this military school that for decades has trained military officers from Latin America."

Is he "IGNORANT' or is he just "LYING"??

Does this "BISHOP" know any of these people: Martin Sheen, Susan Sarandon, Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, Sr. Helen Prejean of Dead Man Walking fame, Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Zavala of Los Angeles (bishop-president of Pax Christi USA - Born in Mexico in 1951, he was ordained for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1977 and named an auxiliary bishop there in 1994.)

The U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA) is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers located at Fort Benning, Georgia. SOA graduates have been responsible for some of the worst human rights atrocities in Latin American history, including:

Two of the three officers responsible for the assassination of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero in 1980
Three of the five officers responsible for the rape and murder of four U.S. churchwomen in 1980
19 of 26 responsible for the massacre of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper, and her daughter in 1989
The man convicted in Guatemalan courts for the assassination of Guatemalan Bishop Juan Jose Gerardi in 1998
The man arrested for the murder of Colombian Bishop Isaias Duarte in 2002

Originally set up as a counterinsurgency training school in 1946, the SOA has claimed numerous reforms in the way it selects and trains its students over the years, culminating in its name change to the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation" (WHISC) in 2001. Each of these changes came only because of grassroots and congressional activism, but none has permanently closed the school or allowed for a full accounting of its tragic legacy. The school continues to train soldiers from countries with the worst human rights records in the region.

Gathering this weekend at Ft. Benning Georgia to close the SOA will be Martin Sheen, Susan Sarandon, Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, Sr. Helen Prejean of Dead Man Walking fame, Bishop Gabino Zavala, and thousands more people of conscience to stand in solidarity with those affected by the atrocities committed by SOA graduates.

You forget to mention that

You forget to mention that the SOA started as a legitimate training facility for what we would call police in Latin America. The criminals started taking advantage of the training without, of course, telling the school of their intentions. Somehow you blame the Bishop for this but not the US army?

"Lay not up for yourselves

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can not serve both God and Mammon."
Matthew 6:19-21,24

Both you and your pal,the "EX-JESUIT" Bishop
ought to watch this:

If the BISHOP is a man of GOD,
he ought to quit his association with SOA.

Protesting the School of Assassins
The Trial of the SOA 37
CounterPunch Wire

Columbus, GA Thirty-seven human rights activists will stand trial in federal court next week for civil disobedience at the School of the Americas (renamed Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) in Columbus, Georgia. They were among 10,000 who gathered last November to call for the closure of the notorious school. The defendants peacefully crossed onto Ft. Benning, site of the school. They are charged with trespass and face up to six months in federal prison and $5,000 in fines. Trial is scheduled to start July 8 before Judge G. Mallon Faircloth in Columbus.

Judge Faircloth is known for giving the maximum of six months to opponents of the SOA/WHISC. Seventy-one people have served a total of over forty years in prison for engaging in nonviolent resistance in a broad-based campaign to close the school. Last year 26 people were prosecuted, including Dorothy Hennessey, an 88 year-old Franciscan nun who was sentenced to six months in federal prison.

"Those who speak out for justice are facing harsh prison sentences while SOA-trained torturers and assassins are operating with impunity," said SOA Watch founder Fr. Roy Bourgeois.

The SOA/WHISC is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers. Its graduates are consistently involved in human rights abuses and atrocities. In 1996 the Pentagon was forced to release training manuals used at the school that advocated the use of torture, extortion and execution. In December 2000 Congress authorized the WHISC to replace the SOA. The renaming of the school was widely viewed as an attempt to diffuse public criticism and to disassociate the school from its reputation. SOA Watch maintains that the underlying purpose of the school, to control the economic and political systems of Latin America by aiding and influencing Latin American militaries, remains the same.

"The SOA is the terrorist training camp in our own backyard," said Bourgeois.

SOA Watch works to stand in solidarity with people of Latin America, to change oppressive US foreign policy, and to close the SOA/WHISC. For more information visit the SOA Watch website.
