Shaping and Celebrating Our Faith
Intentional Eucharistic Communities (IECs) are those small faith communities, rooted in the Catholic tradition, which gather to celebrate Eucharist on a regular basis. Born in the enthusiasm flowing from Vatican II for a church of the people, some IECs were instituted in parishes, some were created as alternatives to the parish, some retain close ties with the institutional church, and some function independently. All are characterized by shared responsibility for the governance and life of the community. Through sharing liturgical life and mutual support for one another, members are strengthened to live Gospel-centered lives dedicated to spiritual growth and social commitment.

THANKS TO NCR FOR POSTING
THANKS TO NCR FOR POSTING THIS INTERVIEW. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK BILL IF HE EVER MET FR. PETER CORBELLINI, CS, THEOLOGIAN AND SOCIOLOGIST AND FOR A BRIEF TIME MY PASTOER. THANKS AGAIN!
I am very interested in
I am very interested in Intentional Communities of Catholics who actually live in a commune type setting or live near each other.... in the spirit of CTA........anyone else know of such places/opportunities?
In your question of catholic
In your question of catholic communities who live together and serve the community in some way did you find any that were of interest to you. I have the same interest of a group who observe chasity. Ed
Intentional Communities is a
Intentional Communities is a wonderful Catholic tradition that will become the face of the Church in the future. This is a valuable contribution to the vast majority of Catholics and I suspect the Holy Spirit is working overtime these days to change the Church on just about every level we can conceive. It is truly time for the old Roman Imperial system of top down authority to be challenged and changes from its' decaying and corrupt practices. The People of God are going to receive many gifts of the Holy Spirit as this change occurs. Thanks be to God.
Thanks to Bill D'Antonio for
Thanks to Bill D'Antonio for his articulate defense of intentional Eucharistic communities and their role in re-vitalizing the Church. This gives hope; and hope is needed now more than ever.

I am glad I had the time to listen to the 30 minute tape. I had no knowledge of this 'group' prior to NCR sharing this info.
I am fortunate to live in a small parish with a pastor and deacon and outreach to the needs of our community - I think the IEC approach to living the gospel has and should have great potential for growth.
Very enlightening and
Very enlightening and exciting! Thanks for posting this interview. It is very encouraging to know that such communities are cropping up. Hopefully one will come into existence near my home, or perhaps I can help get one started. This sounds to me exactly the way the church ought to function.

Nice to see podcasts back on NCR :-)
After reading this article I
After reading this article I find the nature of these communities very similar to the Christian base communities born out of the Liberation Theology in Central and South America. Also called Ecclesial base communities. Their methodology consists of three steps 1 VER (Look) Meaning looking at and studying their reality using structural analysis. 2. JUZGAR (Judge) that reality in the light of the Gospel and see where the sin of that reality rests. 3. ACTUAR (Act) In community plan, execute and evaluate actions towards changing that sinful reality.
In other words, without ignoring the personal and family issues, the community becomes an instrument of conscientization (acquiring a social conscience) and organization.

May 15, 2009 WILL BE A HISTORIC DAY FOR ME
This is what I have been looking for, not just looking for, yearning for, since ten years ago; when I first heard about "base communities" in Latin countries, and vaguely "maybe in the Southwestern United States". I thought since I'm not Hispanic, and don't live in the Southwest, I probably was not included in such a possibility.
Anglos are in? Wooo! Getting way down to the commoner grass roots, which is exactly where I think Jesus always ministered: I specialize in really welcoming and really caring about ordinary Catholic folks. That's because I specialize in really welcoming and really caring about ordinary nonCatholic folks.
I loved how Bill D'Antonio talked so kindly, simply, and in such an easy to understand ordinary way. Yet his background is intensely academic.
Yep! That's what I think Jesus did, and what the Holy Spirit wants us to do.
I think the IECs can be deeply bonding. That's what I have missed in several parishes in which I have lived.
Despite years of devoted Catholic service: as a CCD teacher; years in several Catholic choirs; the usual Altar Society (only SOME years--honestly they were not really, really outreaching); vacuuming and decorating the Church for holidays; watering the roses in front of the Church with my little kids one hot summer, when nobody else wanted to; master catechist classes; years and years of daily Mass attendance (but less when pregnant); liturgy meetings; and much, much more--I was still lonely for deeper Catholic bonding.
I was so busy with a larger family (more than 2 kids) that between trying to always keep the house presentable, some years having to work outside the home, and all the kids' sports activities--I NEEDED MORE ADULT, EDUCATED CATHOLIC FRIENDSHIP. Because in several parishes where I lived, they didn't reach out in that way, I was starving at my own Church. No exaggeration. These needs for MORE "Catholic-wise" are real.
So we live in a small city, but I am willing to travel to a larger city nearby, to even participate on a once a month basis, in IEC gatherings. I feel like the short guy Zaccheus, and Jesus is coming to MY house!
Wow, I spent30 minutes or
Wow, I spent30 minutes or more, making a coment and because I made an error in typing the letters to save my comments, they were erased and that reall upset me. Since I believe that my comments were important, I'm going to try again. After listening to Mr. D'Antonio's tape, I was quite disappointed in hearing what he had to say. I'n not a real bright person, but I fail to see what good will come from Catholics that form IE Communities. They are just running away from the serious problems facing the Catholic church to-day, tomorrow and for the next thousand years unless they com back and take a stand, Mr D'Antonio. You know Mr.D'Antonio that they are just creating more problems so why don't you say so. How can the problems that the bishops have created ,be resolved by allowing the bishops to win. You leave, they win. You abandone your Church building and nothing changes for us Catholics that remain. They still are in control. Mr. D'Antonio, why don't you and all the brilliant Catholics speak out. How about saying something like, yes, the bishops have used over 2.6 biliion dollars of church money and will continue to use more but you can stop it by not contributing to sunday collections, not by running away. How about saying this Mr. D'Antonio, the bishops have made financial settlements and hudreds and hundred of abusive priest have left the church and do not have to register as sex offenders because the Statute of Limitations and the bishops that secretly protected them. You have to contact your Congressional Representatives to do something about a bad law. A law, that over the past 50 years has protected abusive criminals. This bad law should not continue to protect pedophiles. Leaving the church is not the way to go. It is your church. It belongs to you not the failed leaders of the church. When you leave the church, it validates their power and control. Is that what you want? Your not only abandoning your church but your fellow Catholis. Come back. Don't leave, we need you. help us get the Statute of Limitations removed for starters.
