Having worked on the ground in the war zones of Africa, and having witnessed the hypocrisy of such anti-liberalism, in terms of women, the socially marginalized (including those afflicted with AIDS, and those raped, male and female, child soldiers, and those accused of witchcraft), I do not believe a "conservative" African Catholic Church to necessarily be in the best interest for the average young African. I do concur with the Bishop from J'burg in his critique of the agendas of Western Secular NGOS, and I have personally witnessed amazing caritas from the Catholic religious, from priests, monks, and nuns, on the parish level. But the synod Is not comprised on these selfless saints of the streets. And this hierarchy has historically aligned itself with those in power, regardless of their reward for the average citizenry or any commitment to democracy or Human Rights.
That this machine is exporting it's societal and cultural ideals to America I personally believe will have significant complications for attendance and for trust between the clergy and the laity of this country. I can see this unraveling already beginning to take place in my diocese.
