Woman appointed as rector of Pontifical university in Rome

The Vatican's Congregation for Catholic Education has appointed a woman to lead one of Rome's seven pontifical universities, the special academic institutions established directly under the authority of the pope. 

Franciscan Sr. Mary Melone has been appointed rector of the Pontifical University Antonianum, the Roman university run by one of the main orders of male Franciscans, the Order of Friars Minor. The appointment was announced Thursday on the Friars website.

The defrocking of a former Vatican ambassador is a "sign of the seriousness" with which Pope Francis and the Vatican are approaching the clergy sexual abuse scandal, according to the Holy See's representative to United Nations agencies in Geneva.

Italian archbishop calls for 10-year ban on godparents to stop Mafia infiltration

After a pledge by Pope Francis to "excommunicate" mobsters from the Catholic Church, an archbishop in southern Italy has proposed a 10-year ban on naming godparents at baptisms and confirmations as a way to stop the mafia from spreading its influence.

Msgr. Giuseppe Fiorini Morosini, the archbishop of Reggio Calabria, wrote to Francis some time ago with his suggestion "to prevent the exploitation of the church," in particular by the powerful Calabrian mafia known as 'Ndrangheta, and discussed his proposal with the pope at the Vatican last weekend.

Vatican financial watchdog signs accord with U.S. Treasury Department

In its latest bid to tackle corruption and increase transparency, the Vatican's financial watchdog has signed a bilateral accord to exchange information with its counterpart in the U.S.

On Monday, officials with the Financial Information Authority announced it endorsed the agreement with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, an independent body in the U.S. Treasury Department responsible for regulating and supervising domestic and foreign banks.
