Liberation theologian's Call to Action speech focuses on feminism, interreligious work

At 40, Aimee Upjohn Light is a liberation theologian and eco-feminist, had Mercy Sr. Margaret Farley as her doctoral dissertation adviser at Yale in 2003, is editor of The Journal of Inter-Religious Dialogue, and serves as an assistant professor of theology.

However, where she teaches theology might come as a surprise: Light serves on the faculty of conservative Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

The head of the U.K.'s theological membership society, an adviser to one of the Vatican's pontifical councils, has publicly supported a British theologian whose fellowship at the University of San Diego was canceled.

Paul D. Murray, the president of the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain and a consultor to the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, has expressed his support for Tina Beattie, a theologian known for her work in contemporary ethical issues.

An organization that rates universities on their protection of academic freedom has expressed concern about the University of San Diego’s cancelation of a visiting fellowship for a noted British theologian.

The 47,000-member American Association of University Professors listed their concerns Monday in a letter to university president Mary Lyons, who canceled a fellowship awarded to Tina Beattie after saying the theologian’s view on same-sex marriage reflected public dissent from church teaching.
