Students at Spalding Catholic School in Granville traced, cut and put fabric pieces in sets, but they weren't busy with some elaborate art project.

They were participating in a shoe-cutting party to benefit African children through the Sole Hope project, whose main goal is to provide closed-toe shoes so jiggers do not cause foot-related diseases.

Jiggers burrow into feet and lay eggs that multiply and damage tissue, causing pain and infections that may lead to amputation and even death.

A veteran of the airline industry for 30 years, Bates now serves as a driver for Jewish Elder Transportation (JET) Express, a volunteer driver program and a service for adults offered by Jewish Family Services of Greater Kansas City. JET Express uses volunteers to provide door-to-door transportation for adults ages 65 or older, regardless of religious affiliation. (According to Bates, JET Express drivers can be of any religious denomination as well.)

Today, the community of believers in Jesus gathers to remember and celebrate his baptism. There at the Jordan, John clarified his role as precursor of Jesus. The baptism given by John was preparatory for the baptism that Jesus would bring: John's was with water, but Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit. There at the Jordan, Jesus was identified as "my beloved Son," and from that moment on, he would be the living Word and Wisdom of God. In all his words and in all his works, Jesus would make known to sinners the love and mercy of God.
