Becoming attendants of the nonviolent Jesus

As we process through Lent toward Holy Week, it may be helpful to recall Jesus' testimony in court before Pontius Pilate, the representative of the Roman Empire. For me, these words sum up the Christian life of peace and nonviolence:

My kingdom does not belong to this world.

If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Judeans.

'M.A.S.H.' actor talks death penalty at Kansas City Catholic school

Actor and activist Mike Farrell, best known for his role as Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt on the television series "M.A.S.H.", spoke against the death penalty Tuesday at Notre Dame de Sion, an all-girls Catholic high school here.

Farrell spoke to about 45 students, mostly sophomores, on the importance of human dignity and its relevance to abolishing the death penalty.

Pax Christi USA moves conference to Atlanta on labor justice grounds

Catholic peace advocacy organization Pax Christi USA has changed the venue of its 2013 national conference from Washington to Atlanta.

The annual conference will now convene June 14-16 at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Atlanta, Pax Christi announced Feb. 5. The conference was originally supposed to be held at a Hyatt in Washington, D.C., because of "hotel workers' request for people of conscience to boycott Hyatt hotels," the group said.

Community college dances to protest violence against women

On Valentine's Day, approximately 30 people danced and clapped around a room at Johnson County Community College to rise up against violence against women. 

Students, faculty and local community members danced to commemorate the 15th annual V-Day, a campaign that raises awareness each Feb. 14 about violence against girls and women. The global movement is inspired by activist and Tony Award-winning playwright Eve Ensler, author of "The Vagina Monologues."

Nonviolent theory meets nonviolent practice

At the 35th anniversary of the St. Louis Catholic Worker in September, one of our former workers, Patrick Coy, led a roundtable on nonviolent resistance. Pat is a conflict resolution professor at Kent State now, and he gave us thoughts to chew on.

"Us" was about 40 current and former workers plus extended community and volunteers. We met outside in a big circle in beautiful weather.
