Adopt a Guide

Bookstores are adoption agencies, bringing together not parents and children, but rather readers and authors. Good booksellers can tell simply by the glint in a reader’s eyes if that person is hungry for spiritual wisdom and will take good care of the author they adopt. Bookstore adoption counselors over the years have learned how to recognize those best suited for this or that author adoptee.

A good bookstore is a virtual nursery of spiritual directors and inspirational guides of all religions for those seeking the holy in their daily lives. No need to go to India or some monastery; in a bookstore, prayer guides and wise gurus will come to you, instead of you having to go to them. While one would expect to find spiritual guidance in prayer, meditation, and holiness at your local church, this product is not typically offered. So, if you have an anemic spiritual life, a lackluster prayer life, or a bland love of God, seriously consider visiting a local adoption agency—your bookstore.

Thank you for the gift of book guides,
some a thousand years old, some new.
They are my compass companions today
as I zigzag along the Way to you.

Today in the mail came the brand new collection by the Reverend Father John Dear SJ of the Essential Writings of the Reverend Father Daniel Berrigan SJ, the latest in the long Modern Spiritual Masters Series from the greatest English language Roman Catholic publishing house Orbis Books.

I am reading it now and highly recommend it for all of us pilgrims along this zigzag way to God, to Peace, to Compassionate Merciful Infinite Love.

Let it serve as portal to all of the wonderful writings both of Father Berrigan and of Father Dear.

I am glad for elibris and

I am glad for elibris and Amazon, which are saving many people money.
Buying directly from bookstores is pointless now. Take it out of your local library, read it, then see where you can get it cheapest online.

I've been reading your books

I've been reading your books since the 1970's when I first heard you speak to teachers in KC. Your daily relections in "The Old Hermit's Almanac" remains a favorite of the entire family. "Chasing Joy" brought me out of the doldrums of a lost church! Bless you!

I agree, Father, though not

I agree, Father, though not necessarily about finding spiritual guidance in India (though, I suppose, each to his own). I just finished reading the meditations of the Cloud of Unknowing and am about to embark on my annual reading of The Divine Comedy, which, though not a spiritual book per se, I do find very helpful in my prayer.

During Lent each year I read a book entitled "Pontius Pilate" by Paul L. Maier, an historical fictional account of Pilate's life, focusing especially on his time in Judea, his interaction with the Lord, and the effect it had on him. Again, not specifically a spiritual book, but it certainly brings the Passion story to life for me.

One of the best little daily meditation books I have come across is called "Benedictus", a book made up of daily meditations drawn from quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and published by the same company that publishes "Magnificat", that magnificent little prayer book/missal. Along those lines, I highly recommend the Holy Father's books on the life of Christ and the Apostles (drawn from the texts of his weekly general audiences).

I could go on at great length, especially good is anything written by our previous Holy Father, John Paul II, the Great (Gift and Mystery, Rise Up, Let Us Be On Our Way, and Crossing the Threshold of Hope are particularly good) and anything by Archbishop Fulton Sheen are excellent sources as well. There is much out there in our tradition too, lives and writings of the saints (especially Sts. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila and Therese of the Child Jesus).

So much wonderful spiritual guidance available in our tradition, one of the beauties of the Catholic Faith.
