Thank you all so much for your contributions. For the fifth year in a row, you, our dear readers, have met -- surpassed, actually -- our fundraising goals. Last week, you gave $100,000 to keep NCR's mission of independent, lay-led Catholic journalism thriving. Thank you so much for all your support.
As I wrote Saturday, we pledge to use your gifts wisely and carefully to continue our mission of telling the stories about the church in the world.
The Gospel reading for Sunday was from Luke, the Emmaus story, one of my favorite Gospel messages. I was particularly struck with the men who were talking to the unrecognized Jesus. They are on the brink of despair, talking about Jesus' death: "We were hoping that he would be the one," they said. "Some women from our group, however, have astounded us," they say. The women of course had visited the tomb and brought the news back to the men that Jesus had risen.
I must confess that I had NCR and the webathon on my mind as I read these passages. Reading them, I reflected on the number of times I have been astounded by stories I have read in NCR. The best stories in NCR astound when they come from unexpected places and people who live humble, faithful, holy lives.
My pledge to you is to use the money raised by the webathon to give you astounding stories.
Your generosity gives me great hope that NCR will continue on its mission of reporting on the church and being a forum for the church
If you missed the chance to contribute last week and want to show particular support for our Web efforts, our donation page is still open, and you can designate your gift for the webathon. No donation is too small. NCR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your gift is tax-deductible as allowed by law.
