Vatican to take hard line on traditionalists' Jewish views

The Vatican will tell the traditionalist Lefebvrist group it must respect Judaism, other Christian churches and other world faiths to be fully reintegrated into the Roman Catholic Church, a leading cardinal has said, according to a Reuters report.

Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn said these reforms of the Second Vatican Council, which the traditionalist Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) rejects, were "not negotiable" in doctrinal discussions due to start soon between the Vatican and the group.

"It's not the case that Rome will let the Lefebvrists off easy for everything," Schoenborn told the German daily Passauer Neue Presse, calling the traditionalists after their founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, who broke with Rome in 1988.

Pope Benedict triggered a controversy in the Church and with Jewish leaders in January by lifting the excommunication of the SSPX's four bishops, including one who denied the Holocaust.

SSPX should be suppressed

SSPX should be suppressed once and for all the good of the Church. They are so far to the EXTREME right, they will always do exactly what they want to do no matter how sternly they are reprimanded by Vatican authorities. They represent hatred and ignorance and the lowest possible common denominator in their disregard for other human beings who do not believe in their very narrow interpretations of the correct way to be a Catholic. The very fact that Benedict (who shares MANY of their approaches to theological matters), lifted the excommunications will go down as one of the defining moments in his very dark and backward papacy. Their secrecy alone is enough to label them as dangerous. It's time to speak out about these extremists because they hurt not only Catholicism but humanity as a whole. Oh yes, the shills will come out of the decaying woodwork to defend the SSPX, but that only makes the case for their suppression a greater priority.

what utter rubbish.

Chris, I do not know if you

Chris, I do not know if you truly understand what you just wrote because it is evident that you lack discernment of the highest sort. Vatican Council I and II were nothing more than appeasers, compromise and infiltration. That was a "surface calm" period and it had nothing to do with "Doctrines" as it was more to do with "Pastoral". This was also the era of "anti Popes" and those who deliberately wanted to destroy the church from within, so they posed as "man of the cloth" of the highest office or shall I say "sheep in wolves' clothing" began to unravel many traditions of the Church, such as latin Mass, receiving communion on the hand, standing vs. kneeling when receiving the body of Christ, etc. As a result of those horrific changes are what you now see in the Catholic Church - individualism, division, free pass to do one's will, lack of reverence and things holy, watered-down versions of the truth, teachings have fallen into one's own interpretation of doctrine, etc. SSPX group stood on those traditions and had a valid point for doing so. I believe you and many others often fall into "escapism" and not see the cause and effect of such "ill-conceived" maneuverings. Further, I do not condone any branch of the Roman Catholic Church to part from the Vine; however, human nature is that - egos, defiance, disobedience and spiteful, to name a few. To summarize it all - it's the nature of the beast. Don't get me wrong, I am not justifying it, but just to state the normalcy and tendencies of mankind. Pope Benedict was accurate in lifting the excommunication. God's mercy is endless and vast; uniting vs. dividing is preferred with the understanding of what the "Doctrines" are that the Catholic Church teaches and have been for over 2,000 years. The flock leaves and enters the Faith/Church at his/her leisure. The Church in no way and should not be subject onto one's feelings at the moment or what he/she believes it to be. That person is also welcomed back at his/her leisure still without the Church changing its position. You speak of suppression and yet you are clueless of what its ramifications are. You see things at the surface without intelligently applying logic and reason. Please, I highly recommend that you do so because you are just blowing air and consuming and espousing hatred and ignorance - the very point of your own argument.
