Slum tours
by Tom Gallagher on Feb. 02, 2010
Yesterday's Wall Street Journal carried quite a story. The story discussed the slum tour business -- that's right slum tours -- where the wealthy travel to impoverished communities around the world to observe poverty. It's worth a read..

Going slumming has a long history. In this country, it reaches back at least to the 1830s.

The Daughters of Charity used to take busloads of nuns who attended their college in St. Louis to look at "the poor" who lived in Pruitt-Igoe and other housing projects.
Hey, anybody want to visit
Hey, anybody want to visit Ciudad Juarez with me?
second year in a row it is judged the most violent city in the world based on ratio of violent crime to population.
This year has also gotten off to a very bad start.
The right wing Mexican federal government (presided by a graduate of US economic schools) far to the south has also implemented policies favoring the multi-nationals over the local businesses in Juarez, so poverty is pandemic and increasing, and extreme.
So, any wealthy want to ride along with me?
Remember, I am NOT a security escort. I have no martial arts training, etc.
Just a goofy guy who has had some luck slipping around, and into the magnificent Cathedral.
So bring your own bravery, with a smile!
and prepare to meet some of the finest people on the planet Earth.

I was blessed to spend a month or more with them in the early eighties, visiting vets living in the subways, etc., with their founder Brother Jim Curran, LBSF.
I'm sure they could fit you in and aid your search far better than I. They are a real inspiration always.
You really have to see this.
