Matching grant met on Webathon Day 2

 |  NCR Today

Thanks to all who have joined the NCR Webathon drive in 2013. Our goal for the week is $100,000, and we have made substantial progress on that goal. Yesterday, we brought in about $6,700, and by midday Kansas City time, we had nearly hit $12,000 for the day. Thanks so much to all of you.

Thanks goes to the people who have so generously offered matching grants. The two yesterday and the $5,000 matching grant today were tremendous jump-starts for this incredibly important venture. If you value professional reporting on Catholic issues, then NCR should be your news source. Your donation today will help make it possible for us to keep doing that reporting.

The kind of reporting that NCR does costs money. That’s why we need your help.

Today, for example, we have staff writer Brian Roewe in Reno, Nev., for the second national gathering of the Priest-Labor Initiative and the annual convention for  the National Federation of Priests' Councils, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary with a theme of "All things renewed in Christ." John Allen is in Rome right now, where he brought us the news about the much-anticipated beatification of Oscar Romero.

The website today offered up NCR’s latest editorial, "Pope Francis should meet with the sisters." The news last week that Pope Francis had “reaffirmed” the doctrinal assessment of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was not something we wanted to hear, but we also argue that we who support the sisters should not be drawn into despair. This case has not been closed. We encourage Pope Francis to meet with the sisters directly, to hear them out, and we have confidence that that conversation will happen.

Look at our roster of writers: Jamie Manson and Phyllis Zagano. Fr. John Dear and Fr. Peter Daly. Michael Sean Winters and Eugene Kennedy. Sr. Camille D’Arienzo and Sr. Joan Chittister. Can you find another news source with a similar range of views?

You’ll find it here. And we ask you to pay for it only once a year during our annual Webathon. Please be generous today so we are here for you tomorrow.

No wonder Heidi Schlumpf’s kids like NCR so much. (And if you didn’t see that video, you have to check it out. Look for the link on the Webathon central page:
