Lou Dobbs: Good Riddance!

Readers will have detected, I hope, a certain attentiveness to the ambiguities of life, including the life of faith, in my sense of the world. The “all or nothing” disposition of some is rarely accurate and almost never helpful. There is often a lot of pride in a good deed and misplaced hope in some bad ones. Life is messy, filled with conundrums, and navigating the moral choices we face and formulating the moral conclusions as human beings is the price we pay for being human.

But, the news that Lou Dobbs has been pushed out of his high profile perch at CNN is the exception to the rule. It is good news, pure and simple, no ambiguities involved nor qualifications needed. He had become the most visible bigot in America, casting aspersions against Latinos, documented and undocumented, in his crusade against immigration reform. He indulged crackpot theories when he coddled the “birthers” who questioned whether or not President Obama had been born in the U.S. His understanding of economics was laughable in an eighteenth century kind of way. And, for someone who seemed positively fetishistic about the English language, he often mangled it horribly.

On the radio this morning, someone asked what was next for Dobbs. Who cares? I suppose he will keep his radio show, but that does not have the reach nor the clout of his CNN post. Hopefully, CNN will get a centrist, moderate, interesting host for that prime time slot. (I am usually free at 7 p.m. on weeknights! LOL!) The only regret I harbored at the news of Dobbs’ departure was the thought that CNN might have gotten rid of him sooner. But, Hallelujah that he is gone now.

"He had become the most

"He had become the most visible bigot in America"? I would suggest a slight amendment: "...one of...."

Agreed.

Agreed.

I disagree. Lou Dobbs had

I disagree. Lou Dobbs had the courage to take a stand against *illegal* immigration, not immigration itself. This is the point that seems to be lost on so many people. (Or maybe it isn't...it's so convenient to blur the distinction between illegal and legal immigration!)

There are so many people around the world that would love a chance to live in the United States and who are trying to go through the proper channels to get here. My sister worked as a Catholic missionary in Kenya and encountered these people every day. They are skilled and highly motivated and would be an asset to the United States. However, they obviously cannot cross a border illegally to get into the United States. So they sit and wait for the chance to come here.

It is absolutely imperative that the laws of our country are enforced. If someone is here illegally, they should return to their country and go through the proper channels to come here. We should reward people who follow the rules!

There are many people who would like to come to this country and are following the rules to get here. My sister was a Catholic missionary in Kenya, and she worked with motivated, productive Kenyans who would love a chance to live here and who would be a great asset to this country. They are the type of people that we need here!

People who are here illegally should return to their countries, period. We should encourage more immigration from different countries around the world and reward those who are going through the proper channels to get here.

Mr. Dobbs is married to a Mexican-American and is certainly not what I consider a bigot. What he does object to is the continuing entrance of illegal immigrants and the outsourcing of jobs.
Perhaps you do not live close to what is considered the drug route as I do. We have a huge increase in crime and it gets worse each day. We are near the distribution hub.
We definitely need immigration reform and we have very few voices calling for this action. Lou was the voice..

Dobbs is a bigot; a racist;

Dobbs is a bigot; a racist; and a clown. In short, hes the perfect person for prime time TV. That he has been asked to go is a great boon. That he will remain on "hate" radio, and continue his poisonous career is yet more evidence of what much of the American media represents: a reactionary mentality that has repulsed the rest of the world.

I love it that you can say

I love it that you can say whatever you think about issues, etc. Carry on! No need to publish this

Two years ago my husband and I watched Lou Dobbs each day. Everything would stop when Lou signed on. Then came the Presidential Campaign. It was then that we realized that "Mr. Independent" became, in truth, 'Mr. Republican.' Mr. Dobbs finally lost us when, over and over again, he praised Sarah Palin. Luckily, "Murder She Wrote" came on at the same time, so we could change channels and keep our sanity.

It was hurtful for us to see the change in Lou Dobbs -- a sort of abandonment, I guess. We wish him well.
