Dorothy Day is Smiling: The Nun’s Story of the 21st Century

I was both amazed and pleased to read Tom Fox’s story about the “almost universal resistance” among the leadership of women’s religious communities in answering the intrusive questionnaire from the Vatican about American nuns’ “quality of life.” These responses are no doubt rooted in years of prayerful, non-violent struggle against global human rights violations, injustice and war. Dorothy Day must be smiling!

According to Fox, who interviewed several community leaders on condition of anonymity, most either left large sections of the questionnaire unanswered, sent a letter, or sent a letter with a copy of the community’s constitutions to the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life. Reportedly, the letters were a model of polite, positive, non-violent resistance. The women did what they could do and maintain their own sense of integrity, and that of their communities.

In light of this, the Vatican might try to read the “signs of the times,” re-assess this whole project, and call off the inquisition. Even before this resistance, officials were forced to withdraw some of the most offensive questions in the questionnaire. The sentiments of the Catholic laity are clearly on the side of the Sisters. Some bishops have written public letters of support for the nuns. And apparently, the Congregation has a major problem funding the process. So, why not transfer any money that has been raised for this project to works that nuns do every day: like feeding the world’s poor.

Dorothy Day was an orthodox

Dorothy Day was an orthodox Catholic. To invoke her name in this context is heresy.

There is 0% chance the Vatican will call off this process. They will politely request once again the needed cooperation; then if that is refused, leaderships of congregations will be removed, a temporary reform process implemented under ecclesial supervision, the majority of the rank-and-file nuns from each community will gladly comply; and the reform of women religious in the United States will be completed.

Within the next twenty years the LCWR communities will represent less than 20% of women religious in the United States. CMSWR will become the dominant conference; that is unless the Holy See disbands LCWR in the meantime.

Isn't it wonderful?

It amazes me that Catholic sisters think that they are above the rules; they remind me of the Catholic queens. Their resistance to this visitation might win them friends among the allies that they already have but it certainly won't bring peace to the entire church. If anything, their rebellion will only further divide it. I thought that these sisters were peace makers. It seems to me that they have drawn their line in the sand and now they force the Vatican to respond. They really need to get out of their convents more. They sound like a bunch of celibate women who only listen to themselves. They fail to deal with the real issues: if their post Vatican II models of religious life are of God, why is it that they can't attract new sisters? Remember, what the scriptures say. It is hard to put new wine into old wine skins.

Either way, within the next 10 to 15 years, the majority of these communities will become extinct. Instead of them trying to find new ways of safeguarding their wonderful and courageous history, they only undermine it with rants of arrogance and hostility toward the church's hierarchy. They tend to forget that the bishops and the pope are also part of the church as well. Their anger at the church’s leaders reflects what is really in their hearts. Why do they hate these men as much as they do?

Obedience, they say, only applies to their superiors. The last time I check, the Pope was one of their superiors. What even happened to "for the good of the church?" These sisters reveal that it is and always has been about them, like the Catholic queens of Europe.

In the vein of re-assessing

In the vein of re-assessing in the "signs of the times", and in the just cause of transparency, would someone please clarify... Is it true that the election of Pope Bendict was the first to be done electronically, without paper ballots, and that he was elected on the first ballot? If true, at whose suggestion was this done, what voting system was used and who oversaw the implementation, and security insuring protection against manipulating/co-opting the system(as was easily done in the 2004 US presidential election).
My understanding is that the electronic apparatus was installed(under temporary elevated flooring to accomodate the technology)with voting device at the seat of each Cardinal. Thus the traditional white smoke signal was not from cardinals'paper ballots. Does someone have the answers?

I was utterly disgusted with

I was utterly disgusted with the response the Vatican recieved from our convents across America. I really hope the vatican pushes harder because our convents need a cleansing! I have done alot of research over the last 20 years and have seen the slow transformation of our Catholic Nuns and Sisters turn to NEW AGE, OCCULTISM, WICCA, PAGANISM, WOMAN SPIRITUALITY PRACTICES, DARWINISM, NUMEROLOGY, MIND ALTERING PRACTICES, LEFTHAND WRITING, and OUIJI BOARD! They are sopposed to be an example and show us lay people how to rely on THE HOLY SPIRIT for Wisdom, Healing, and Knowledge.
I have seen Catholic book stores across New England for instance, close BECAUSE of the sacrilegious material they sold, the New Age Courses (LIKE A COURSE IN MIRACLES!!!) they held on church property. GOD cannot Bless a ministry if it directly disregards HIS Written Word. NO WONDER relious life is dying! God help us!
I personally know nuns & sisters who do this stuff all in the name of "helping people." Many don't dress like they belong to a religous order either like they are ashamed. I call it like it is. I have witnessed it and it hurts to see my friends mock the church because of these things. People need to stop being afraid to exposed our convents. Our convents need to get back to PRAYER, OBEDENCE TO THE POPE, and SACRIFICE in POVERTY. It's an embarresment to the Holy Cathlolic Church!

Seems to me that when a

Seems to me that when a member of the family is intent on committing suicide, the rest have a duty to intercede. Most congrations have been killing themselves off for decades. They no longer inspire the faithful to a life of service in the Church. Too bad.

I do not know what your most

I do not know what your most "congrations" may do, anonymous, but our good sisters are getting abused, abandoned, neglected, violated after giving all their good years to the service of God, and now left to freeze and starve. Our good sisters are not "killing themselves off;" we are killing them off.

Saint James calls religion pure and simple assisting widows and orphans in their distress. Do not leave these Brides of Christ in the cold to die alone and hungry.
