Webathon Day 3 update: Matching grant met; second challenge made

 |  NCR Today

The matching grant from Jeanne Marie Lee was met by midmorning on the third day of Webathon 2013. Remember that I set a personal goal today of raising at least $15,000. To help us on the way, John Weiser has pledged a matching grant of $1,000. Donate now to take advantage of John's gift to NCR.

I am still thinking about what Fr. Richard Rohr said this morning about NCR and journalism and NCR's unique place in American journalism.

NCR was founded in the fertile ground of the Second Vatican Council by a group of laymen who recognized the uniqueness of that moment.

The job set by our founders nearly 50 years ago was to tell the story of the American Catholic church. To create a space for the voices of practicing, believing Catholics to be heard. If that is an agenda, I guess that is ours.

We have done our best to tell the story of people on the margins of our church and society: women, minorities, gays, the laity, the poor and peacemakers. Among those people have been a number of theologians and activists who have run afoul of officialdom, but that is what people on the margin do. And those are the stories we want to tell because that is the story of a church alive and struggling with the Holy Spirit.

Help us keep the spirit alive and meet John Weiser's pledge challenge.
