Correction
A story that appeared on our website last week, "Maryknoll votes on Bourgeois’ dismissal from order,” incorrectly reported how certain members of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers’ general council voted to remove Fr. Roy Bourgeois from the order. We cannot confirm how individual council members voted. We regret the error.
Mike Virgintino, the order’s communications manager, told NCR March 13 that although it is known that the general council held a vote on the matter, the ballot was secret and “even the five who voted don’t even know how the other four voted."
"When the vote was conducted, they were all in the room and they placed their vote in an envelope, they sealed the envelope, and they handed it to the superior general. [The superior general] opens them and counts them. There are no names attached to them. All the envelopes look the same, all the ballots look the same," he said.
"The people who voted know their vote and only their vote, and they know the outcome of the vote."
