Amy Sullivan on the HHS contraception mandate debate
by Tom Roberts on Feb. 09, 2012
Read Amy Sullivan, via RNS's David Gibson, who said her column "makes the most sense of anything I've read," which is about as generous an endorsement as one might expect. You'll find her column here.

The simple fact is that the
The simple fact is that the Bishops are against the health care rights of women attempting to control their fertility and this has very little to do with abortion. If any thing it should reduce abortions of unwanted pregnancy. The fact is that over 90% of catholic women and similar numbers of non catholic women depend on these medications during their fertility periods. The Bishops are the ones without a true dog in the fight and their response once again is misogynistic and against the necessary health care of employees at Catholic Hospitals and Universities. Perhaps this is another good reason these institutions should separate themselves form the Bishops by showing that they are under the influence of 2000 year of Catholic teachings and understanding but they can not be true Institutions seeking truth if they remain under the mandates of legalistic Bishops. The time is now for them just as it was for Catholic Health Care West (Remember it was Bishop Olmstead who attempted to triage emergent medical care) to separate from these men who believe in their own omniscience and could care not about the need of any University for the academic freedom to search for the understandings of truth that the HOly Spirt brings us in each generation. So, no, I do not agree with this Sullivan auricle and find it off point and superficial.

I agree and I'm surprised
I agree and I'm surprised that NCR is trying to walk the line on this issue. The question of religious liberty cannot be discussed without asking "who is the Catholic Church" and the answer is NOT that the church is whatever the bishops say it is. Catholic women have spoken on this issue, and their position is far more credible than the USCCB's.
Very will put.

MORE PAPAL BULL ... Tom, you
MORE PAPAL BULL ... Tom, you know David Gibson is often an apologist for , and usually carries the case of, the US bishops. Amy Sullivan isn't far behind. Amy omits any discussion of the bishops' obvious "'Trojan' Horse" strategy to dump Obama for his aggressive pursuit of child sexual predators, which appears to be terrifying the bishops.

where is the "speak" about
where is the "speak" about MEN's responsibility in this whole issue...??
always about women, her body is torn time and time again...men walk away...
does the president's health care bill require men ,who get women pregnant,
to pay for half of the abortion????(no, i am not for abortion)..i want
to hear talk of men's role in all this...are the sermons on right to life
sunday aimed at men? ...speaking to the men of the parish, uncles, fathers,
sons, grandparents about THEIR role in all this?? and do it infront of the
women, daughters, etc in the pews...it is always "shame" on women....bishops
do not have a medical degree, they know nothing about a women's body...that
is between a doctor and a women...check the "original Humanae Vitae, not the
one changed by a priest after the input of doctors(& the Crowley's)etc on
the original committees recomendations, etc..where is the "speak" about
personal responsibility, education, etc...men stand up,"where ,oh where, have
all our men gone"...men, you can get a visectomy (tie your tubes),which is a reversible procedure, when you are mature and can raise children and help pay for them...do not always put the blame on women...i am saddened about some of the stupid mind sets of some bishops,....and i am related to a bishop(RIP),(who was well educated and taught me much about this issue),and a Pope,...so i do know a little bit.... .dncrowley

When I read Amy Sullivan's
When I read Amy Sullivan's article I thought about the mentality of the Catholics who call themselves 'Advocates' for woman's health issues and the people mentioned like all the Bishops, Sr Keehan, Fr Jenkins, Sr Campbell, Mr. Casey who sit down with pro-abortion people to develop strategies along with them that impacts the future of couples and families thoughout the country for generations to come! I can't help but to reflect on Matthew 7:22-23 which says: "On that day many will say to me Lord Lord! We performed many good works in your name, But I will reply to them, I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break my Father's laws'"
In that day, He will reveal to them that He had nothing to do with thier works.
