White House Congratulates Dolan

White House press secretary Jay Carney issued the following statement this weekend on the occasion of the consistory that elevated Archbishop Timothy Dolan to the cardinalate:
“We congratulate Cardinal Dolan on his historic achievement. The Obama Administration has worked closely with the Cardinal Dolan and the Catholic Church on a wide range of initiatives to promote strong communities and serve the common good. We appreciate Cardinal Dolan’s leadership and look forward to continuing to work with him and church leaders to strengthen our nation and promote justice and peace throughout the world.”

OBAMA TAKES PAPAL SNUB ....... MSW, Obama is neither petty nor foolish. He will grin and bear Dolan's and the pope's snub last Friday in order to show respect to and for Catholic voters. He, however, will long remember the pope's and Dolan's "anti-contraception crusade" ploy to try to replace him with a right wing Republican next November.

Only compulsive tea leaf readers would ever consider this an issue. As far as SCOTUS appointments, the Church knows that, like bishops, half of so called conservatives were only pretending. Most anti-Roe justices were appointed by Republicans. This should not be a presidential issue, since the POTUS can't tell the SCOTUS members he appoints how to vote. Neither can the Church. If the bishops were to try to pull any of the crap on justices that some bishops try to pull on Catholic politicians (withholding Communion especially) the justices affected would have to recuse themselves.

Will the six Catholic justices of the Supreme Court recuse themselves from a case in which birth control pills are denied to women by the yahoo Santorum who is runnig for pope (nee president)?

Very decent of Obama, considering that Dolan is a Rigali protege' who is playing politics on the contraception non-issue (since the Church has been forced to cover this since December 2000 by the EEOC, yet it was somehow not important then).
