Camosy on "Linsanity" & the Ethos of Sports
by Michael Sean Winters on Feb. 17, 2012
Charles Camosy has an interesting retort to David Brooks regarding Jeremy Lin, the surprise star of the NBA. (Of course, Lin's surprise stardom is almost, but not quite, as surprising as the fact that Lin, and evangelical Christian, made it through Harvard with his faith in tact!) I tend to agree with Camosy that team sports are a daily demonstration of relational anthropology, but I also have to admit that every time I see an ad for today's gladiators in those horrible cages bludgeoning each other to near-death, I shudder.

You think it's remarkable
You think it's remarkable that Jeremy Lin attended Harvard and left "with his faith intact?" What, exactly, do you know about Harvard, sir? Did you graduate from Harvard? Did you attend Harvard for a while? Have you visited the campus, taken a course, or spoken with faculty and students? On what do you base your slur, sir? I spent three years at Harvard and found that faith was as much a part of campus life there as at Catholic University, which I also attended. So what are you talking about?
Poor David Brooks. (Never
Poor David Brooks. (Never thought I'd say that.) For that one line, he's getting slammed everywhere from the Altantic to the New Yorker. He can't help it if he's a stuffed shirt who thinks not wearing suspenders to work is a sign of heathenhood.
